Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "A Caribbean Mystery" we meet Jason Rafiel. Miss Marple turns to him to help her solve the crime. At first he thinks she is just an old spinster, but she soon earns his respect. What is the name of the hotel on the island of St. Honoré where Mr. Rafiel and Miss Marple meet?

Answer: Golden Palm Hotel

Mr. Rafiel and Miss Marple meet in the Golden Palm Hotel. The hotel is being run by Molly and Tim Kendal. In "A Caribbean Mystery" most of the action takes place at this hotel. On the terrace Miss Marple listens attentively to Major Palgrave, who wants to show her the picture of a murderer. Something he sees scares him though and he quickly puts the picture back in his wallet. Soon afterward he gets murdered.

Bertram's Hotel is the location of another Miss Marple novel suitably titled "At Bertram's Hotel". As was the case with her stay at the Golden Palm Hotel this stay has been paid for by her generous nephew, Raymond West.

The Spa Hotel is located in Medenham Wells, which is a town near Chipping Cleghorn. Rudi Scherz is a receptionist at this hotel. In "A Murder is Announced" he is asked to act as a masked intruder at Little Paddocks, the home of Laetitia Blacklock and ends up murdered.

The Tio Hotel is not a hotel where Miss Marple has stayed. It is owned by Marcus Tio and is a location in "They Came to Baghdad".

Jason Rafiel makes a return in the story of "Nemesis", although he is not alive anymore in this book. He has a letter sent to Miss Marple to help him solve an old murder case, which she naturally manages to do.
2. Felicity Lemon had been featured in several short stories, before she made her appearance in the 1955 novel "Hickory, Dickory, Death", also known as "Hickory, Dickory, Dock". She is the very efficient secretary of Hercule Poirot and is described as very ugly, but extremely good at her job. She dreams of perfecting her own filing system. What strange occurrence takes place in "Hickory, Dickory, Death", that is very uncommon for Miss Lemon?

Answer: She makes three errors in a letter

In this novel Hercule Poirot is shocked to find three errors in a letter that Miss Lemon has just typed. She has always been a perfect machine. He soon learns that she is worried over her sister, Mrs. Hubbard, who manages a hostel. Strange things have been going on at the hostel, with some petty thefts and sabotage taking place. Poirot promises to investigate and as can be expected solves the mystery, which includes murder as well.

Not very much is known about Miss Lemon otherwise. Her efficiency is her only trademark and she only dreams about the perfect filing system. It is not known whether she ever fell in love. Hercule Poirot has not been her only employer. She has also worked for Mr. Parker Pyne, the retired government worker whose aim it was to make others happy. He is featured in a few short stories written by Agatha Christie.
3. Ariadne Oliver has always been a very amusing character. She is a lot like Agatha Christie herself. She is also a mystery writer with a foreign sleuth, the Finnish Sven Hjerson. Another similarity with Agatha Christie is the fondness for a certain fruit. Which fruit do we see Ariadne Oliver with, regularly?

Answer: Apples

Ariadne Oliver has a passion for apples. She always has a supply nearby and when she gets out of her car apples roll in all directions. Her fondness for apples is ended, when a child is drowned in a bucket used for the "bobbing for apples" game in "Hallowe'en Party".

The cherries do have a connection with Ariadne Oliver. In "Third Girl" we learn that Miss Oliver has changed the wallpaper in her house to something with ripe cherries, giving the impression that one is in a cherry orchard.

Ariadne Oliver has many eccentricities. She is a feminist, who regularly goes on to claim that things would be better if only a woman would be in charge of Scotland Yard. She also changes her coiffure regularly and has been known to have a strange taste in clothes.

Miss Oliver was first introduced in "Cards on the Table", where she was a dinner guest at the party held by Mr. Shaitana, showing off his collection of murderers to four sleuths. Miss Oliver was one of the sleuths invited, as was Hercule Poirot. Miss Oliver would feature in seven novels, mostly working along with Hercule Poirot. Only in "The Pale Horse" she is featured on her own.
4. In the 1942 novel "The Body in the Library" we are introduced to Dolly and Arthur Bantry. They had previously featured in the "Tuesday Club Murders", a collection of short stories. Mr. and Mrs Bantry live at Gossington Hall, a large mansion near the village of St. Mary Mead, also the home of Miss Marple. Dolly Bantry is known to be passionate about one subject in particular. What is that subject?

Answer: Gardening

Mrs. Bantry is very keen on her garden. In "The Body in the Library" we find her dreaming about winning first prize at the flower show, at the beginning of the story. She also will suggest in the course of the story that a young man Basil Blake could never be the murderer. She knows his mother who always has herbaceous borders and is frightfully generous with cuttings.

In "The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side" we will find that Arthur Bantry has died and his widow is now living in the lodge on the grounds of Gossington Hall. There is also an appearance in the later novel "Sleeping Murder". In this novel Arthur Bantry is still alive. The novel had been written by Agatha Christie in the 1940s, to be published after her death.
5. In "Murder in Three Acts", also known as "Three Act Tragedy", we are introduced to Hermione Lytton-Gore. She is a passionate fan of actor Sir Charles Cartwright. Along with him and his friend Mr. Sattherthwaite, she does a great deal of sleuthing to find the murderer, helped along by Hercule Poirot. She is better known by her nickname, which has a food theme. What is her nickname?

Answer: Egg

Hermione is better known to her friends as "Egg", for obscure reasons. She is very fond of Sir Charles Cartwright, the actor who has taken residence at Crow's Nest in Loomouth, a man nearly twice her age. She also flirts with young Oliver Manders though. Oliver is a rather bitter young man, having felt rejected from childhood. He was an illegitimate child.
6. Henrietta Savernake is one of the characters in "Murder after Hours", also known as "The Hollow". She is a sculptress and also the mistress of doctor John Christow. There is another man in the story who loves her and has proposed marriage to her, but she turned him down several times. Who is the other man in love with Henrietta?

Answer: Edward Angkatell

Edward Angkatell is in love with Henrietta, but she has refused his marriage proposals a few times. The novel has various romantic subplots. Midge Hardcastle is in love with Edward, but he does not notice her. She has vivid dreams of them together at the family estate of Ainswick.

David Angkatell is a young intellectual who is rather silent and brooding. He does not have a romantic interest in the novel. Henry Angkatell is the husband of Lucy Angkatell and is very fond of her despite her many eccentricities, one of them being to walk in a room at any time of the day, just beginning to speak. She tends to be very forgetful as well, leaving many kettles to burn on the stove. The kitchen staff routinely has a large collection of kettles at hand in the pantry to replace the damaged ones.

Hercule Poirot is the detective in the story who investigates the murder of John Christow. He has rented a cottage near the estate The Hollow owned by the Angkatells and happens to be around when John Christow is shot. The cottage that Poirot rents is called Resthaven and is very modern.
7. Dermot Craddock appears a few times in Agatha Christie novels as the police officer in charge of a case, working alongside Miss Marple. He is one of the officers to have a lot of respect for Miss Marple. Craddock is the godson of a Scotland Yard ex-commissioner, who first introduces him to the talents of St. Mary Mead's favourite sleuth. Who is his godfather?

Answer: Sir Henry Clithering

Dermot Craddock is the godson of Sir Henry Clithering, a now retired commissioner of Scotland Yard. Sir Henry is very fond of Miss Marple and greatly admires her qualities of solving crime, relying heavily on village parallels. Craddock makes use of her talents in "A Murder is Announced", "The Mirror Crack'ed from Side to Side" and "What Mrs. McGilliguddy Saw".

Sir Lewis Rycroft is a character in "Sad Cypress". He was in love with Laura Welman in the story. He was married however, so they could not officially announce a relationship. The wife of Mr. Rycroft had been admitted to an asylum.

Sir Philip Starke appears in the Tommy and Tuppence novel "By the Pricking of my Thumbs". He used to live in the village of Sutton Chancellor. Mrs. Copleigh tells Tuppence in the story she suspects Sir Philip of committing a series of child murders a few years ago.

Sir Edwin Sandeman makes a brief appearance in "A Pocketful of Rye". He is one of the doctors who arrives at the office of businessman Rex Fortescue when he collapses one morning.
8. The novel "Death comes as the End" is a unique one. It is of course a murder novel, but its setting is Egypt in the year 2000 B.C. One of the characters in the story is a young girl called Renisenb. She has returned to live with her family after the death of her husband. She now focuses on the happiness of her four-year old child. What is the name of this child?

Answer: Teti

Renisenb has a four-year old daughter, called Teti. She likes to play with a wooden hippopotamus, that used to belong to Renisenb. Khay is the name of her dead husband.

Ipy is one of Renisenb's brothers. He is the youngest son of their father, Imhotep. Ipy is rather a spoiled brat. Her eldest brother is Yahmose, a gentle and somewhat conservative man. The other brother is Sobek, who is impulsive and likes to take risks.

Nofret is the new concubine of Imhotep. He brings her to his home from the North and soon most members of the household hate her with a passion. She ends up murdered. Several more people are killed, before the killer can be stopped. Renisenb is very nearly the final victim, but can be saved in the end.
9. Jerry Burton is the narrator in "The Moving Finger". He is a young pilot, who was in a flying accident. Along with his sister Joanna he moves to the village of Lymstock to recover. Soon he finds himself involved in village life, as he receives an anonymous letter, with insinuations about him and his sister. It turns out more people received similar letters. When murder occurs, Miss Marple is eventually called in to help solve the crime. In the book Jerry takes an interest in a local girl, who has low self esteem. Who is the girl Jerry tries to help?

Answer: Megan Hunter

Megan Hunter is a 20-year old girl. She is the daughter of Mona Symmington. Mona is currently married to local solicitor Richard Symmington. Megan is the child from a previous marriage, who is rather neglected by both Mona and Richard, who have two young children of their own.

Elsie Holland is a nursery governess, employed by the Symmingtons. She takes care of their two young boys, Brian and Colin. Aimee Griffith is one of the village women. She lives with her brother Owen, who is the village doctor.
10. Pilar Estravados is one of the characters in "A Holiday for Murder". She is the only grandchild of old Simeon Lee. She is the child of his daughter Jennifer, who married a Spaniard. In a speech to his family Simeon calls Pilar braver than all his sons put together. Pilar however is not quite what she seems. What fact is revealed about her at the end of the novel?

Answer: She is not the real Pilar

It turns out that the girl who has come to England is not the real Pilar, but one of her friends. They were travelling together, when a bomb killed Pilar. Shen then decided to travel to England as Pilar. In the train to the Lee estate, she meets Stephen Farr.

He is the son of Ebenezer Farr, a former business partner of Simeon Lee. In the end it turns out Stephen is also not what he seems. He is an illegitimate son of Simeon Lee. The two impostors end up marrying each other and are both not responsible for the murder of Simeon Lee.
