Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Harriet is first seen by Peter, she is on trial for murdering her lover. What was his name?

Answer: Phillip Boyes

Impey Biggs was the barrister defending her, Charles Parker the policeman who had her charged and Freddy a friend of Peter's, also at the trial.
2. When Peter tells Harriet he'd like to marry her, what is her response?

Answer: Oh, are you another of them?

Peter asks her in prison, only to be told that his is the 47th proposal she's received!
3. At Harriet's first trial, who is Peter's friend who refuses to find Harriet guilty?

Answer: Miss Climpson

Although Peter swore he had not signalled to her! Miss Climpson (who runs Peter's 'Cattery') is instrumental in solving the case. James Lubbock was a forensic analyst and Sylvia and Marjorie are two other female characters.
4. In the book ("Strong Poison") where Peter meets Harriet, the other romance in the book is?

Answer: Chief Detective Inspector Parker and Lady Mary Wimsey

Had to have a bit of fun with this one! Sir Impey Biggs is a confirmed bachelor (whatever that means!) who breeds canaries for a hobby, so I can't see him with Peter's mother. Although Gerald, Duke of Denver, is a bit of a lad (see "Clouds of Witness"), I don't think Miss Climpson is his type! And as for the ex-burglar and the typist!
5. Who correctly predicted not only the real murderer of Phillip Boyes, but also that Harriet would, one day, send for Peter?

Answer: Sylvia Marriott

Well, it would have to be a woman who got it right! Marjorie Phelps actually was very fond of Peter and had (sort of) proposed to him in "The Unpleasantness at The Bellona Club". Eiluned Price was Harriet's other good friend.
6. For what reason did Peter go to see Harriet in their next encounter, "Have His Carcase"?

Answer: She'd found a man with his throat cut

Harriet rang the Morning Star (realising it would be publicity) and the reporter Salcombe Hardy told Peter that 'his Miss Vane' had found a corpse.
7. Harriet admits to herself that Peter strips what than she expected?

Answer: Better

She describes him as having "Better shoulders that I realised, and, thanks Heaven, calves to his legs". Hardly "Phwoarr", but better than nothing!
8. What colour frock does Harriet buy at Peter's request?

Answer: Wine

Peter asks for it to be "Claret - Chateau Margaux 1893 or thereabouts". Not picky, then!
9. Why did Harriet scream when Henry Weldon kissed her?

Answer: She believed she'd been kissed by a murderer

Although Harriet told Henry and his mother that she had seen a snake, it was Henry's snake tattoo that made her realise Henry was also Haviland Martin.
10. In "Gaudy Night", what is the first present Harriet lets Peter buy her?

Answer: A dog collar

Peter is worried about Harriet patrolling the college at night, so he buys her a dog collar with brass knobs ("..too stiff to squeeze, and it'll turn the edge of a blade - and even if anybody hangs you by it, it won't choke you as a rope would") and teaches her self-defence. The chinese ivory chess set was his second gift to her.
11. Why does Harriet first think Lord St. George is Peter?

Answer: His voice

St. George's voice "set her heart beating by its unexpected familiarity". Could Harriet be falling for Peter??
12. Other people fall in love with both Peter and Harriet in "Gaudy Night" - who falls in love with Peter?

Answer: Miss Hillyard

I think all the Dons fall a bit in love with Peter (and why not?) but Miss Hillyard definitely falls hardest!
13. Who is the undergraduate who falls in love with Harriet in "Gaudy Night"?

Answer: Reggie Pomfret

Although I think Jerry develops a bit of a crush on Harriet, it's definitely Reggie Pomfret who tells Harriet he loves her. Harriet feels no stirring at "Byronic" Reggie Farringdon and Mr Jenkyn is a Proctor.
14. In "Busman's Honeymoon", who does Harriet say she wished she could have married?

Answer: Bunter

And on her wedding night, too! Peter is delighted Harriet has so taken to Bunter - he owes him a lot.
15. And, finally, what does Harriet kiss because Peter had laughed about it?

Answer: an aspidistra

She reflects that she must be completely besotted about Peter if his laughter could hallow an aspidistra, but refuses to kiss the cactus until it's shaved. Unfortunately the removal man walks in as she's telling the cactus this!
