Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which author wrote this? A 2000-year-old man tells tales of his long life, including how he met his own mother.

Answer: Heinlein

The book is Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love", a tale of the life of Lazarus Long, the oldest man alive. Published in 1973 it was nominated for Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards.
2. Whose plot line is this? A genetically engineered woman tries to overcome prejudice and hide her true identity from other people whilst having various Galactic adventures.

Answer: Heinlein

The book is "Friday" by Robert Heinlein. Published in 1982 it was short-listed for both Nebula and Hugo awards. Like many of Heinlein's books, it explores the nature of human relationships and prejudices, whilst also being a good old-fashioned adventure story.
3. Who wrote the trilogy covering people coping with the various seasons on their planet, where each season lasts for several hundred years?

Answer: Aldiss

Published between 1982 and 1985, "Helliconian Trilogy" by Brian Aldiss is set on an Earth-like planet where two main species, one almost human and one more animal-like, cope with seasons that are centuries long. Each species achieves some dominance in different seasons.
4. Who wrote the book with this plot? A man is hired to go to the small town of Santaroga to find out why marketing is ineffective, and why any non-local business that tries to operate there fails.

Answer: Herbert

"The Santaroga Barrier" was published in 1968 in book form after appearing in serial form in "Amazing Stories" during 1967. It looks at a small town where the inhabitants are perfectly content with their lifestyles, and people who are sent to find out why have a tendency to die in nasty accidents.
5. Who wrote the book with this plot? Chemical warfare leaves Britain devastated, with thousands of people driven to extremes of either joy or despair by psychedelic drugs.

Answer: Aldiss

This is the plot of "Barefoot In The Head". Published in book form in 1969 it first appeared in serial form as "Acid Head War" in "New Worlds" magazine.
Set in Europe at an unspecified future time it can be quite a difficult read, as the language used reflects the effect psychedelic drugs can have on speech.
6. Which author wrote about a teenage boy emigrating with his father to Ganymede to join in the process of terraforming?

Answer: Heinlein

"Farmer In The Sky" published in 1950 looks at the trials and tribulations of a family who leave overcrowded Earth to farm on Ganymede. In many ways it is reminiscent of novels of the pioneers of the American frontier.
7. The circus comes to town, and for two boys life will never be the same again. Who wrote this plot line?

Answer: None of these authors

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" is by Ray Bradbury and was first published in 1962. It is probably the scariest of Ray Bradbury's books, but also contains strong fantasy images. In 1983 it was made into a film starring Jason Robards, with Ray Bradbury himself as the screen writer.
8. A man recently discharged from the Army after a war somewhere in Asia is recruited to recover the Egg of the Phoenix. Which author wrote this?

Answer: Heinlein

"Glory Road" published in 1963 was originally serialised in "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction" between July and September 1963, with the book appearing later that year. The hero fights dragons, minotaurs and other strange beasts to recover the Egg of the Phoenix for a beautiful lady.
9. Can you name the author of this novel? Humans on Earth are watched by aliens, and their actions are manipulated for the aliens' viewing pleasure.

Answer: Herbert

"The Heaven Makers" published in 1968 is not one of Frank Herbert's best known works. It is set on a contemporary Earth and focuses on several people whose lives are changed by the aliens.
10. Two boys attend boarding school on Mars and get involved in a revolt against the colonial administrator. Which author is this?

Answer: Heinlein

"Red Planet" published in 1949 is one of Robert Heinlein's earliest novels. It has links to "Stranger In A Strange Land". The description of the Martian life cycle is similar as is the concept of "old ones" who exist in two planes simultaneously.
