quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with the great, unique Hercule Poirot - which name did he take to detect the murderess in "After The Funeral"?

Answer: M. Pontarlier

He took the name of M. Pontarlier of the U.N.A.R.C.O to take a good look and talk to the family of the late Cora Lansquenet. His double life was soon discovered.

He called himself Mr. Parotti in "Dumb Witness" to detect the murder of Miss Arundell. He lived under the name of Mr O'Connor in the short story "The Third Floor Flat". He did not give a reason why he was in need of another name and solved the murder under his own name. Achille Poirot was his so called "twin" in "The Big Four". But even if he deceived Hastings and some others - you didn't fall for this!
2. In the Miss Marple book, "A Murder Is Announced", there are some people living under a different name. Which of these persons committed murder to keep her real or former name a secret?

Answer: Charlotte Blacklock alias Leticia Blacklock

The real Leticia Blacklock would have inherited quite a lot of money but she died before this could happen. Her sister took her identity and murdered three people and nearly killed another one.

The twins Emma and Pip (Philippa) just hoped to get on some money from the "real" Letitia but didn't try something criminal. And Bunch Harmon is the harmless vicar's wife with the nosey relative called Jane Marple.
3. Who is "The Man In The Brown Suit", suspected of a horrible murder?

Answer: John Harold Eardsley

Sir Eustace Pedler was the villian of the story. Harry Lucas and Harry Rayburn were both used as an alias by John Harold Eardsley who did marry the heroine Anne Beddingfield. "The Man In The Brown Suit" was one of the early books of Mrs Christie, released in 1924.
4. You would think that travelling on the Nile would be a harmless thing to do. But no, as it is told in "Death On The Nile", there is a murdering couple and a dangerous agitator on board. Who was the dangerous agitator?

Answer: Signor Richetti

The Italian bad boy. Italians are seldom harmless in Agatha Christie's books! He was using the same code in his telegrams as Sir Eustace Pedler in "The Man In the Brown Suit". No wonder Colonel Race, appearing in both stories, was able to lay his hands on him.
5. In the whodunit "A Pocket Full Of Rye", Miss Marple avenged the murder of her former maid, Gladys Martin. Gladys Martin was seduced into unknowingly poisoning Rex Fortescue by a man calling himself Albert (Bert) Evans. Who was "Bert"?

Answer: Lancelot Fortescue

Poor Gladys was strangled by him. She did put the poison in the marmalade, having been told that it was a truth drug. Vivian Dubois was the friend of the also murdered Adele Fortescue and Gerald Wright was Elaine Fortescue's love interest.
6. In "The Secret Of Chimneys", Anthony Cade found the famous jewel, a beautiful wife and the throne of a fictitious country. Now what was his real name?

Answer: Prince Nicholas Obolovitch of Herzoslovakia

Yes, he proved to be the long lost heir. Prince Michael was murdered but, strangely enough, not by his successor - not that unusual in Royalty!

King Victor was the crook while Lord Caterham was the owner of Chimneys. I always thought that he might be related to the Lord of Blandings Castle (P.G. Wodehouse). They had a lot in common.
7. In the Hercule Poirot mystery "Mrs McGinty's Dead" the police found a book with the name "Evelyn Hope" written on the fly leaf of that book. Now who was Evelyn Hope?

Answer: Robin Upward

Robin Upward didn't want to know that his mum was the mistress of a famous murderer - his dad. He killed Mrs McGinty, who did a little bit of blackmailing, and his adoptive mother Mrs. Upward. The women were suspected but innocent in the end, as told to us by Monsieur Poirot.
8. In "N or M" what pseudonym did Tuppence Bereford use?

Answer: Mrs Blenkensop

She turned out to be Mrs Patricia Blenkensop. The other women also lived in the suspicious guest-house "Sans-Souci". Her husband Tommy used the name of Mr Meadowes. And they did get the dangerous spies, what else would you have expected?
9. In "Murder On The Orient Express", what is the real name of the victim who used the name Ratchett?

Answer: Cassetti

Cassetti was stabbed by nearly all passengers and the conductor using the same coach on the Orient Express. As Hercule Poirot found out, he was responsible for the kidnapping and murder of a little girl, Daisy Armstrong. This was avenged on the train. Foscarelli was one of the other passengers.

In real life, Al Capone was a well known Mafia boss and Bruno Hauptmann was the one who was convicted for the murder and kidnapping of the child Charles Lindbergh III in 1932.
10. Before travelling on the Orient Express, Hercule Poirot had to solve a "Murder in Mesopotamia". In the end, who was (the supposed to be dead) Frederick Bosner?

Answer: Eric Leidner

All these people were members of the archeological team. But the murderer of Louise Leidner, and of Miss Johnson, was Eric Leidner. Louise was married to Frederick Bosner. She found out that he was a spy and betrayed him to the officials. He was supposed to be killed in a train accident but took the name of Eric Leidner.

He met his "widow" and she married him again. When she had an affair with another man, he killed her. Later he poisoned Miss Johnson because she had found out how the first murder was done.
