Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happened to the jade dragon in the Eagle's Sorrow Gorge in the end?

Answer: He turned into the exact likeness of the original horse and joined the pilgrim team to fetch the scriptures.

The jade dragon in the Eagle's Sorrow Gorge used to be the son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the Western Sea. Because he burnt up the bright pearls in the palace, his father reported him to the court of Heaven as a rebel. The Jade Emperor hung him up in mid-air and gave him three hundred strokes.

Then Guanyin asked the Emperor to spare his life and taught him to serve Sanzang with his legs. When Sanzang and Sun Wukong arrived at the Eagle's Sorrow Gorge, the jade dragon ate the horse. When Guanyin appeared, he turned into the horse and served as Sanzang's mount. An ordinary horse wouldn't be able to cross the thousands of mountains and rivers to reach the Buddha-land on the Vulture Peak.
2. Why did Zhu Wuneng join the pilgrim team to fetch the scriptures?

Answer: He was converted to Buddhism and told to join the pilgrim team by Guanyin.

Zhu Wuneng used to be the Marshal Tian Peng in the Milky Way. Because he took some wine to seduce the moon maiden, the Jade Emperor sentenced him to two thousand hammer blows exile to the mortal world. His spirit had to find a womb to occupy, but he lost his way and entered the womb of a sow. So he looked like a pig. Guanyin converted him to Buddhism and told him to join the pilgrim team, but during the journey to the west, he was the most unstable in the team.
3. Where did Sa Wujing live before joining the pilgrim team?

Answer: Shifting Sands River

Sa Wujing used to be the Curtain Raising General standing in attendance by the imperial chariot in the Hall of Miraculous Mist. Just because he accidentally smashed a crystal dish at a Peach Banquet, the Jade Emperor had him given eight hundred strokes of the rod, exiled him to the lower world and made him look like a demon. And every seven days the Jade Emperor also sent a flying sword to stab his chest over a hundred times. He got so unbearably cold and hungry that he had to emerge from the waves every two or three days to devour a traveler. And he threaded the skeletons of nine pilgrims he had eaten together with rope and played with them in his spare time. In the end Guanyin converted him to Buddhism and told him to join the pilgrim team.

River of Heaven was where the Great King of Miraculous Response lived; Black River was where Alligator Dragon lived; Green Wave Pool was where the Nine-headed Bird lived.
4. Who went to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits to see Brother Monkey (Sun Wukong) during the ordeal in Elephantia?

Answer: Zhu Bajie (Zhu Wuneng)

Sanzang drove Sun Wukong away because he thought he had killed innocent people. Then he was captured by the monster Yellow Robe but later set free by the princess Prettier-than-a-flower from Elephantia. Sanzang and his two disciples went to Elephantia and presented a letter by Prettier-than-a-flower to the king, who thus knew his daughter had been married to the monster. Zhu Wuneng and Sa Wujing volunteered to fight Yellow Robe and save the princess, but they two were beaten by the monster and Sa Wujing was captured.

Then the monster transformed himself into a handsome young man and paid a visit to the king of Elephantia. He told the king Sanzang was a monster and turned Sanzang into a tiger with magic, which scared the king much. The dragon horse turned himself into a palace maid and fought Yellow Robe, but he was beaten too.

In the end the horse convinced Zhu Bajie to go to the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits to ask Sun Wukong back. Zhu Bajie went there and provoked Sun Wukong, by saying the monster had insulted him orally. So Sun Wukong went to Elephantia, beat the monster and saved Sanzang.
5. By what did Zhu Wuneng know the monster mother of Senior King Gold Horn and Junior King Silver Horn was in fact the transformation of Sun Wukong during the ordeal on Flat-top Mountain?

Answer: By his tail

Senior King Gold Horn and Junior King Silver Horn captured Sanzang, Zhu Wuneng and Sa Wujing and invited their monster mother to eat Sanzang together. Sun Wukong killed the monster mother and transformed himself into her. He entered the cave and the two monsters at once knelt down and kowtowed to him.

When he leant forward and said, "Get up, my children", a monkey's tail stuck out, which was found out by Zhu Wuneng, who still hung from a roof-beam.
6. How did Sun Wukong bring the king of the Wuji state back to life?

Answer: He got a Nine-cycle Soul-returning pill from Supreme Lord Lao Zi and brought the king back to life with it.

The pilgrim team passed by the Wuji state and lodged in the Imperially Founded Precious Wood Temple. While Sanzang was sleeping there, a ghost appeared in his dream. He said he was the king of the Wuji state and one year before a Quanzhen Taoist wizard came to the state and helped him exterminate the drought, so he and the wizard became sworn brothers.

But later the wizard killed him by throwing him into a well in the palace garden and turned himself into the king. The ghost king asked Sanzang to save him and restore his throne. Sanzang ordered Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie to do this, so they went to the palace garden. Sun Wukong fooled Zhu Bajie into entering the well and Bajie met the Well Dragon King there.

It turned out that the Dragon King had kept the body of the Wuji state king all along by using a face-preserving pearl. Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie took the corpse back to the Temple and Sanzang compelled Sun Wukong to revive the king.

The Monkey had to go to the Supreme Lord Lao Zi's and asked for a favor.

The Lord gave him a Nine-cycle Soul-returning pill and he revived the king with it.
7. Who was the master of Lord Yellow Brow, who pretended to be the Buddha in a fake Thunder Monastery?

Answer: The Buddha Maitreya

The pilgrim team passed by a big mountain and saw a Lesser Thunder Monastery there. It turned out a monster named Lord Yellow Brow had set it up to fool them. The monster disguised himself as The Buddha and captured Sanzang, Zhu Wuneng and Sa Wujing. He enclosed Sun Wukong with a pair of bronze cymbals.

The Duty God reported this to the Jade Emperor and the Emperor sent the Twenty-eight Constellations to help the Monkey out. The Monkey then asked for help from The True Martial Lord and Great Sage Bodhisattva King Teacher and they sent their armies respectively, but they were all beaten by Lord Yellow Brow.

In the end the Buddha Maitreya came to help the Monkey and conquered the monster, who was in fact a yellow-browed page who used to strike the stone chime of Maitreya's.
8. How did Sun Wukong diagnose the king's illness in Purpuria?

Answer: By taking the pulses with hanging threads

The pilgrim team arrived at Purpuria. The king there had been confined to his bed with a chronic illness that had lasted for a very long time, to the state's misfortune. So the king publicized a royal proclamation to recruit good doctors. The Monkey had Zhu Wuneng take the proclamation down and then he went to the court to diagnose the illness of the king.

But the king couldn't bear to see the Monkey, who had an ugly voice and a hideous face, so he couldn't look at, listen to and talk to the king face to face. Sun Wukong claimed he could feel the pulse with hanging threads and the king agreed.

Then he turned his three hairs into threads and diagnosed the illness of the king in this way.
9. How did the seven she-devils capture Sanzang in Gossamer Cave?

Answer: By fooling him into entering the room, then tying him up and suspending him from the rafters.

When the pilgrim team passed through Gossamer Ridge, Sanzang volunteered to beg for some food. Then he met the seven she-devils, who were in fact the Seven Fairies coming down to the mortal world from Heaven, on the ridge and was captured by them. Sun Wukong inquired about the seven she-devils and took their clothes away while they were bathing in a pond.

Then Zhu Wuneng rushed to the pond, first harassing the devils and then wanting to kill them. The she-devils produced silken ropes from their navels and bound the Pig up.

In the end the Monkey killed all the insect disciples of the seven Spider Fiends and saved their master.
10. What was the missing ingredient for the medicine to treat the king's illness, according to Elder of the Nation in Bhiksuland?

Answer: Sanzang's heart

The pilgrim team arrived at Bhiksuland, where they found at the door of every house hung a cage, in which a little boy was sitting. When they inquired the superintendent about it, they were told the king was seriously ill because he had been at Queen Beauty day and night and Elder of the Nation, also the father of the Queen, had collected all ingredients to make the medicine, but the last one that needed to be added was the hearts of 1,111 little boys.

Then Su Wukong made their escorting Gods take those cages containing little boys away. Sanzang paid a formal visit to the king and Elder of the Nation told the king a better ingredient had appeared, which was Sanzang's heart.

The Monkey transformed himself into the Master and drove away Elder of the Nation and Queen Beauty. Finally the Star of Longevity arrived and told the Monkey that Elder of the Nation was in fact his white deer.

The Star rode his deer back to his place and before leaving, he gave three jujubes to the king to help him achieve longevity.
