Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting on Empire Day eight years after Palpatine's rise to power, "Lost Stars" follows the lives of Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree. Both of them live on which planet in the Outer Rim?

Answer: Jelucan

Thane and Ciena both live on the remote planet of Jelucan, a cold, mountainous world at the edge of the Outer Rim. Thane and his brother Dalven, sons of Oris and Ganaire Kyrell, are part of a second wave of settlers to colonize on Jelucan, and lead relatively modern lives by Galactic standards.

Conversely, Ciena, daughter of Paron and Verine Ree, is part of the first group of people to settle on Jelucan. Her ancestors were exiled from their home after their king was overthrown and they refused to bow down to the new ruler. They settled in the valleys of Jelucan, and, in homage to their fallen king, live a life lacking in modern comforts. To the first wave settlers, honor and loyalty are the most important aspects of their existence, and to break an oath of loyalty or a promise is the most unspeakable thing a person can do.
2. The prologue opens with Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell each travelling to their planet's main city, Valentia, for its annexation into the Empire. Both of them encounter Grand Moff Tarkin while in the hangar to see an Imperial ship. Which subordinate of Tarkin's is with him when they catch the two children sneaking around the hangar?

Answer: Firmus Piett

Thane and Ciena both spot Tarkin's Lambda Class shuttle as it heads toward Valentia for Jelucan's annexation into the Empire. Thane and Ciena share a love of flying, and are both eager to see the shuttle up close. When they get the chance, Ciena sneaks away from her parents and Thane away from his older brother, and both find their way into the Imperial hangar. They are not the only kids in the hangar, though, and that's when things get scary. Mothar Drik, a bully around Thane and Ciena's age, starts insulting Ciena for being from the valleys. Thane comes to Ciena's defense and a fight ensues. Mothar's friends begin surrounding Thane and Ciena, but just before things get completely out of hand, Grand Moff Tarkin and Piett arrive in the hangar. Mothar and his gang flee, but Thane and Ciena stay.

Tarkin doesn't punish them, but instead, sees that they are merely curious about the shuttle. Tarkin uses their curiosity to entice them to join the Empire when they are old enough. He tells Piett, who is only a junior officer at the time, that punishment isn't always the best course of action, and that sometimes, positive interactions breed the best results. Piett rose through the ranks to become an Admiral under Darth Vader before perishing at the battle of Endor.
3. Eight years after Jelucan joined the Empire, Thane and Ciena complete their training and join the Imperial Academy. Both of them are selected for the Royal Imperial Academy on Coruscant. They also both have two roommates in their dwellings. Which of Ciena's roommates is the analytical science expert?

Answer: Jude Edivon

Jude Edivon is a native of Bespin, and is a science guru with a very analytical mind. Her roommates often tease her for this, and occasionally get a little irritated when she suggests activities that are more intellectually stimulating. Ciena's other roomie, Kendy Idele is a native of Iloh, a tropical world, and therefore, she enjoys aquatic hobbies such as swimming and diving.

The three of them become good friends, and both Kendy and Jude begin to help Ciena see that her feelings for Thane are more than that of a friend.
4. Thane's roommates are two very different types of individuals. Ved Foslo is a native of Coruscant, and military proper, with familial connections in the Imperial navy. The other, Nash Windrider, is quite a free spirit, keeping his area of the room messy and disorganized. Which planet does Nash call home?

Answer: Alderaan

Nash is a member of an aristocratic family from Alderaan, and is very proud of his home world and its people. He often brags about being from the same planet as Princess Leia Organa. He even invites Thane to visit Alderaan some day. Ved Foslo, a Coruscant native, grew up with a military father, and is therefore a very prim and proper individual. His father is a General in the Imperial navy who works in Central Intelligence. Ved always makes sure that people know of that family connection.

During their time at the Imperial Academy, Thane and Ciena's relationship went through a rough time. After reconciling, both remained friends for the rest of their lives. Eventually, both of them realized that their friendship was actually deeper than they had believed, and that they truly loved each other.
5. After graduation from the Imperial Academy, Ciena is assigned to a Star Destroyer. Thane is assigned to the Death Star. To which Star Destroyer is Ciena assigned?

Answer: Devastator

Ciena is excited about being assigned to the Devastator, because it's considered to be one of the top ships in the Imperial fleet. Thane is assigned to the Death Star, and both of them are excited because they believe the Devastator would visit the Death Star often, so they would likely see each other a lot. The Devastator is the Star Destroyer that chases Princess Leia's transport at the start of "A New Hope." Ciena and Nash have a conversation about being sent to Tatooine to recover the stolen Imperial plans.

The Executor is the Super Star Destroyer that eventually becomes Darth Vader's flagship. It crashes into the second Death Star at the Battle of Endor, killing one of Ciena's best friends. The Inflictor is the Star Destroyer Ciena ultimately commands at the Battle of Jakku. The Chimera is the Star Destroyer commanded by Grand Admiral Thrawn in "Star Wars: Rebels" and the "Thrawn" novel series by Timothy Zahn.
6. After the destruction of the Death Star, Ciena and one of her fellow Lieutenants is tasked with rescuing Darth Vader from the wreckage. Which Lieutenant travels with Ciena for the rescue?

Answer: Berisse Sai

Berisse Sai is a fellow Lieutenant like Ciena, and after the two rescue Lord Vader from the Death Star debris, they become good friends. Berisse helps fill a void in Ciena's heart as a result of Jude Edivon's death when the Death Star was destroyed. Berisse ultimately dies at the Battle of Endor with Admiral Piett when the Executor crashes into the second Death Star.

Kendy Idele, like Thane Kyrell, becomes disillusioned with the Empire and defects to the Rebel Alliance. Kendy and Thane both become members of Corona Squadron, one of the groups that attacks the second Death Star above Endor.
7. During the destruction of the Death Star, Thane is offsite on a distant planet. It takes several days for his team to receive word on the results of the Battle of Yavin. Which planet is Thane and his team on when the Death Star is destroyed?

Answer: Dantooine

In "A New Hope," after Princess Leia lies to Grand Moff Tarkin and tells him and Vader that the Rebel base is on Dantooine, Tarkin sends a squad of troopers there to verify Leia's claims. Tarkin receives word from these troops that the base on Dantooine has been deserted for a long time, proving that Leia lied to him. Thane Kyrell was a member of the group of troopers dispatched from the Death Star to Dantooine. For several days after the station's destruction, Thane and his team hear nothing from Imperial Command. Eventually, they travel back to the Devastator, Lord Vader's flagship at the time, for new orders. Thane and Ciena meet each other and are elated that both of them are still alive. Shortly after receiving orders to deploy to Kerev Doi, Thane leaves the Empire and returns home to Jelucan.

Ciena, believing that Thane is merely distraught over the Death Star's destruction, travels home to convince Thane to return to Imperial service. After a heated discussion and spending the night together, Ciena realizes that Thane is not coming back. She tells Thane to take a freighter off Jelucan, because she will report his desertion after a week. Thane takes her advice and joins a crew headed for the Outer Rim. After several months with this crew, they encounter a rebel cell, and Thane is recruited by Wedge Antillies to join the Alliance.
8. After the Battle of Hoth, Ciena returns to Jelucan for her mother's embezzlement trial, hoping to speak to the magistrate on her mother's behalf. Is Ciena's mother found guilty of embezzlement?

Answer: Yes

Ciena and her father are both fully convinced of her mother's innocence and believe that the real culprit is someone with high ranking Imperial connections. Ciena's loyalty to the Empire begins to waver because of the corruption she witnesses leading to her mother's false conviction, but she remains loyal because of the oath that she took pledging herself to Imperial service.

During Ciena's time on Jelucan, Thane comes to stand with Ciena and her family during the time before the trial. Ciena confronts Thane about joining the Rebellion, but their love for each other keeps them together. After the trial, both of them return to their respective starships, knowing that neither of them would betray the other.
9. Just before the Battle of Endor, Corona Squadron enters the Hudalla system to gather intel on the Empire's movements. Admiral Piett sends a squadron of TIE fighters, lead by Ciena to engage Corona Squadron. Between the two squadrons, which member of Thane and Ciena's Imperial Academy class was NOT present at Hudalla?

Answer: Ved Foslo

Thane and Kendy are part of Corona Squadron, and Ciena and Nash are part of the TIE squadron sent after the rebels. Thane makes his presence known to the Imperials after Ciena orders them to leave. Nash, furious at Thane for his defection from the Empire, tries to shoot Thane down. Ciena prevents Nash from succeeding, protecting Thane from Nash, while making it look like she tries to shoot down Thane herself. Kendy remains silent, but she sees that Ciena saves Thane from Nash.

Of the other two members of Ciena and Thane's Imperial Academy class that we meet, neither were at Hudalla for the dogfight. Jude Edivon was killed when the Death Star was destroyed at the Battle of Yavin, and Ved Foslo is not seen again after graduating from the Academy.
10. After Ciena recovers from her injuries from the Battle of Endor, she is given her own Star Destroyer to command. The Inflictor is sent to the Battle of Jakku, and eventually crashes into the planet. Believing Ciena to be dead, Nash Windrider plans his revenge on the New Republic, and plans to give Ciena a posthumous award for valor. Who is Nash's assistant on the attack cruiser Garrote at the end of the book?

Answer: Dalven Kyrell

Thane's brother Dalven remained in Imperial service throughout the story, but was an inferior soldier and officer to that of Ciena Ree and Nash Windrider. At the end of the book, Dalven has only risen to the rank of Lieutenant, and is Nash's assistant aboard the Garrote. Nash wasn't a fan of Dalven's because of how Dalven had treated Ciena when the two had interacted on Jelucan before their Academy days.

However, because of the betrayal that Nash felt at Thane for joining the Rebel Alliance, Nash felt it appropriate to let Dalven remain on the Garrote and work under his command.
