Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This play takes place primarily in which country?

Answer: Scotland

Yes, it takes its form in Scotland beginning under the rule of King Duncan. Tragedy strikes in the form of a murder and Scotland is thrown into a whirlwind of destruction under the rule of the increasingly power hungry Macbeth.
2. Which of these events comes first?

Answer: The three witches decide when they will meet Macbeth

"First Witch
When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

Second Witch
When the hurlyburly's done,
When the battle's lost and won.

Third Witch
That will be ere the set of sun.

First Witch
Where the place?

Second Witch
Upon the heath.

Third Witch
There to meet with Macbeth."

As for the other three, Malcolm's naming occurs last, and the prophecies and Macbeth's titling occur almost simultaneously. Though Macbeth does not realize it, at the moment that he receives the predictions, Duncan decides to give the dead Thane's title to Macbeth.
3. Before murdering Duncan, what apparition appears to Macbeth?

Answer: a bloody dagger

This is the first of many of Macbeth's visions. He is also visited by Banquo's ghost, and when he visits the witches for more prophecies, they reveal to him visions of what is to happen in reference to his downfall. His ranting about these apparitions is what leads those around him to suspect insanity.
4. Which of these was used as a symbol agreed upon between the Macbeths to signal Macbeth to murder Duncan?

Answer: a bell

Upon hearing the bell, Macbeth states:
"I go, and it is done; the bell invites me.
Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell
That summons thee to heaven or to hell."
5. Who says, "A little water clears us of this deed..."?

Answer: Lady Macbeth

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are the only two involved in the crime. However this spot in the play displays a strong difference between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, as well as the depth of Macbeth's soul. This is shown in the far more eloquent way that Macbeth dwells on their hideous deed:
"Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood
Clean from my hand? No; this my hand will rather
The multitudinous seas incarnadine,
Making the green one red."
6. Malcolm flees to Ireland and Donalbain to England following the murder of their father.

Answer: False

It is actually the opposite. Donalbain flees to Ireland and is not heard of for the rest of the play while Malcolm goes to England to seek refuge under the king there. Eventually, he is retrieved by Macduff and along with Siward and the English army returns to Scotland as a force to be reckoned with for Macbeth.
7. Which of these is not a strange occurrence that happens following Duncan's murder?

Answer: an ancient monument collapses

We learn this in the scene immediately following the murder. Ross and an old man are discussing the horrible events. The old man states:
"Hours dreadful and things strange; but this sore night
Hath trifled former knowings."
showing the true bizarreness of these occurrences.
8. To which animal did Macbeth compare the assassins?

Answer: dogs

The assassins were considering to not go through with the murder. So Macbeth insulted them, badgered them, and reminded them of what Banquo had done to them to ensure their support.
9. Finish this quote from Macbeth: "O, full of _______ is my mind dear wife".

Answer: scorpions

This is one of the times where we see the torture that Macbeth is going through. Originally, Macbeth was convinced he had no reason to kill Duncan in the first place. So as the play goes on and Macbeth kills more and more people, his previously "nice guy" soul is constantly undergoing torture.
10. The evil force known as Hecate is an authority to the three witches that prophecy on Macbeth's future.

Answer: True

She appears once or twice to the three witches and commands them to bring Macbeth to his downfall. They are quick to relay to her the success of their prophesying.
11. Finish this curse from the three witches: "Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire, burn; and ____________."

Answer: cauldron bubble

This occurs before a visit from Hecate and the second set of visions which they give to Macbeth. It lasts for a rather large portion of the first scene of the fourth act and displays rather vividly the various things added to the witches' bubbling cauldron.
12. Which of these is the first apparition given to Macbeth by the witches?

Answer: an Armed Head

This apparition warns Macbeth of his doom. It represents war.
"Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff;
Beware the Thane of Fife.--Dismiss me:--enough."
13. How is Malcolm finally convinced of Macduff's loyalty?

Answer: Macduff's family was murdered by Macbeth

Malcolm doubts and tests Macduff for the better part of Act four, Scene three. It is assumed that Macbeth had already sent other spies to England by the care that Malcolm takes in testing Macduff. Once Macduff's loyalty is sure, they begin planning their return to England.
14. Finish Lady Macbeth's Quote: "All the _________ of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand."

Answer: perfumes

This occurs in the scene where the doctor and a gentlewoman are watching Lady Macbeth as she sleepwalks through the halls. The doctor is convinced that he can do nothing for her condition as the cause of her condition is her guilt as opposed to something physical.
15. Following Macbeth's death by the hand of Macduff, where is Malcolm crowned?

Answer: Scone

This is where Macbeth was crowned as well, earlier on in the play. Malcolm also names all of his loyal thanes earls, a title that had not existed in Scotland ever before.
