Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fran Goldsmith
Answer: She doesn't die
Fran Goldsmith was already pregnant with her former boyfriend's baby when Captain Trips hits and she's worried her baby will contract the superflu and die once it's born. Mother and baby both live through "The Stand".
2. Nadine Cross
Answer: Thrown off roof by Flagg
Nadine Cross is "promised" to Randall Flagg and must stay a virgin until her wedding night. Once she becomes Flagg's bride and he impregnates her, all her hair turns white and she later taunts him until he angrily flings her off the sundeck of the MGM Grand hotel.
3. Nick Andros
Answer: Homemade bomb assassination
Nick Andros is a highly intelligent deaf-mute who never trusted Harold Lauder. This was wise, since his demise was caused by a homemade bomb built by Harold and meant to wipe out the entire Free Zone Committee, but which only managed to kill Nick and fellow member Susan Stern thanks to the timely return of Mother Abagail.
4. Glen Bateman
Answer: Shot by Lloyd
Glen Bateman meets up with Stu Redman early on and together they travel to Mother Abagail, become part of the Free Zone Committee and are chosen to face Flagg in the final Stand. Stu severely breaks his leg, so Glen, along with Larry Underwood and Ralph Brentner, continue without him until they're picked up by Flagg's goons and imprisoned. Glen taunts Flagg until he orders his right hand man Lloyd Henreid to shoot him.
5. Larry Underwood
Answer: Nuclear explosion
Larry Underwood begins as a selfish musician, but later learns the importance of giving and becomes somewhat of a leader. He's part of the Free Zone Committee and the group of four who must face Flagg in the final Stand. He and Ralph Brentner are the only two that make it to the "Stand" and ultimately die in the explosion from the nuclear bomb Trashcan Man brings to Las Vegas as a gift for Flagg.
6. Judge Farris
Answer: Killed by Flagg's sentries
Judge Farris is a somewhat minor character, but with a big role in the spy campaign initiated by the Free Zone Committee to learn what Flagg is up to. He attempts to gain entry to Las Vegas from the north to see what he can learn, but he's stopped by Flagg's sentries who kill him before he ever makes it there.
7. Stu Redman
Answer: He doesn't die
Stu Redman was a man of few words until the arrival of the superflu and his key role in the Free Zone Committee. He's chosen as one of the four to face Flagg in the final Stand, but he never makes it there. He breaks his leg and can't continue, then catches pneumonia and almost dies, but with Tom Cullen's help beats all the odds and returns to Frannie to start a new life.
8. Charles Campion
Answer: Superflu victim
Charles Campion was a soldier monitoring the military complex where the superflu originated, but when the deadly virus escapes, so does he with his family. He thinks he got out in time, but he didn't and he spreads the virus across his escape route, infecting everyone he meets until he eventually succumbs to the virus and dies.
9. Harold Lauder
Answer: Commits suicide
Harold Lauder is an obnoxious teen whose intelligence makes him arrogant. After an imagined betrayal by Fran and Stu and his seduction by Nadine, Harold builds a homemade bomb to blow up the Free Zone Committee, then flees with Nadine. Along the way to join Flagg, he has a motorcycle crash and Nadine leaves him to die.
In great pain and seeing the error of what he's done, he apologizes in a note and takes his own life.
10. Mother Abagail
Answer: Malnutrition, dehydration and old age
Mother Abagail draws the "good" superflu survivors together, but comes to believe her pride is a sin against God and leaves the safety of the Boulder Free Zone to wander in the wilderness for weeks. She returns near death and tells of the final prophecy that sends four men to face Flagg on his on turf.
While it's not explicitly stated how she dies, she's suffering from extreme malnutrition, dehydration and exposure that's compounded by the fact that she's 108 years old.
