Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Glen Bateman was known by Stu Redman affectionately as "baldy". They met each other right after the plague. Glen told Stu that he had been an assistant professor at Woodsville Community College. What subject had Glen taught before the plague?

Answer: Sociology

Glen's sociology skills came in handy often during the organization of the Free Zone. Glen was one of the four Committee members that Mother Abagail instructed to go West. Glen had the opportunity to confront Flagg, and he realized that Flagg wasn't really worth being afraid of. This angered Flagg and he ordered Lloyd to shoot Glen.
2. Before being recruited by Flagg, Lloyd Henreid was in prison for committing numerous acts of arson with his friend Poke Freeman.

Answer: False

Lloyd was in prison after a huge murder spree, not arson. Flagg found him almost starving to death in prison after everyone had died from the plague. He made Lloyd promise his total allegiance to him and set him free. Even though Lloyd wasn't too bright, he was Flagg's right-hand man, and when he saw things were falling apart, he still stayed loyal.
3. The Trashcan Man was esentially a pyromaniac. He was fascinated with fire and he sure liked to set fires! On his journey West he met up with an abusive man called The Kid. How was The Kid finally disposed of?

Answer: He was attacked by wolves

Trashy was insane, but he was a weapons genius and a great asset to Flagg. Flagg helped him get rid of The Kid by sending wolves to finish him.
However, Trashy's nature got the best of him later and he destroyed many of the weapons Flagg needed. To atone for this, Trashy brought back an atomic bomb, which destroyed Flagg's community.
4. The little boy first known as Joe to Nadine, and then as Leo Rockway to everybody else, had a favorite "toy" before he and Nadine officially met Larry Underwood. What was this "toy"?

Answer: Knife

Leo originally had some problems due to an animal bite and shock, but he overcame them under Larry's love. Nadine named him Joe at first because she didn't know his name. This was because he couldn't talk. But as time progressed, he regained his speech and everyone learned his real name, Leo. Leo was always a bit psychic and knew things.

He also found Mother Abagail after she disappeared. Leo had originally been carrying a knife and attacked Larry with it when they met. But Larry won Leo's trust with a guitar, which became Leo's new toy.
5. Randall Flagg, also known as The Dark Man, was the leader of the evil forces in the West and appeared in the plague survivors' dreams. Yet his power weakened near the end of the story. Which of the following was NOT a sign of his weakening power?

Answer: His physical appearance deteriorated

Although everyone was afraid of Flagg, many things contributed to his power disintegrating. None of the spies were captured the way he wanted them to be, Nadine tricked him into throwing her off the balcony, and he didn't "see" the people escaping the West.
6. Abagail Freemantle, also known as Mother Abagail, was the leader of the good forces in Boulder. She also appeared in peoples' dreams playing her guitar, and was very religious. How old was she?

Answer: 108

After the formation of the Free Zone, Mother Abagail disappeared. She felt she had become too proud and sought guidance from God. When she was found after the bombing, she told Stu, Larry, Glen, and Ralph to go West to confront Flagg. She then died peacefully. When the plague hit, she was 108 years old.
7. Tom Cullen, the lovable mentally retarded man, was known for saying "My laws!" and always spelling "M-O-O-N". When Stu was sick, how did Tom know what medicines to give him?

Answer: Nick told him in a dream

Tom was a total sweetheart, and considered Nick his best friend. Tom went West as a spy and was the only spy to survive and come back to Boulder. Flagg couldn't "see" him because he was mentally retarded. He found Stu sick and with a broken leg, and nursed him back to health. Nick, although dead, helped him with this through a dream.
8. Kojak was Glen's dog, one of the few dogs who survived the plague. Unfortunately, Kojak had to be left behind when Glen journeyed to Boulder. What was Kojak's name before the plague?

Answer: Big Steve

Kojak remembered his name as being Big Steve before Glen named him Kojak. Against all odds, Kojak was able to travel across the country and find Glen. When he stopped at Hemingford Home, he encountered wolves and, while seriously injured, he miraculously survived. He also went West and stayed by Stu. Good dog!
9. Before the plague, Larry Underwood was a bit of a jerk. He had become a famous musician, and success had gone to his head. What could be said about Larry after the plague?

Answer: His character improved

Larry became a very good and decent person after the plague. His mother would have been proud of him. He originally loved Nadine, but she rejected him, and he ended up with Lucy and "adopted" Leo. Larry went West and he and Ralph were part of the ultimate showdown against Flagg. Larry and Ralph died in the nuclear explosion.
10. Nick, the intelligent deaf-mute man, was the heart and soul of the story and one of the main leaders of the Free Zone. When a child in the orphanage, who helped him read and write?

Answer: Rudy Sparkman

As a child, Nick received enormous support from Rudy Sparkman, a fellow deaf-mute. Although Nick died in the bombing, his spirit lived on and gave guidance to his good friend Tom Cullen. His death was one of the saddest parts of the book.
11. Lucy Swann was the woman who ended up falling in love with Larry. When she met Larry, Nadine, and Leo, Lucy told them a little about her pre-plague family. Why did she get married so soon after high school?

Answer: She got pregnant

Lucy got pregnant a year after graduating high school, and her married life was happy. She was also happy with Larry and loved Leo. Lucy got pregnant with Larry right before he went West, and later gave birth to twins.
12. Stu Redman was one of the main characters in "The Stand". He was a quiet man from Texas, but he became one of the prominent leaders of the Free Zone and the head of the Committee. Was Stu appointed as the first Marshal of the Free Zone?

Answer: Yes

Stu and Frannie were very much in love with each other and Stu became the father to her baby. Stu also went West, but he broke his leg and had to be left behind. He then caught the flu and almost died, but Tom Cullen found him and saved him. He came back to Frannie, but they both decided to leave the Free Zone and let someone else take over his duties as Marshal.
13. Another main character was Fran Goldsmith, who had gotten pregnant before the plague. While she loved Stu, Harold had loved her, which caused dire consequences. When Fran's baby was born, whom did she name it after?

Answer: Her father

Fran gave birth to the first baby in the Free Zone, and named it Peter Goldsmith-Redman after her father. The baby almost died from the flu, but overcame it. Fran and Stu raised the baby, and she was pregnant again at the end of the story. Fran had been injured in the bombing, but she didn't lose the baby.
14. Nadine Cross, the woman who found Leo and named him Joe, was "promised" to Flagg and subsequently rejected Larry. Nadine had one very striking feature. What was it?

Answer: White-streaked hair

Nadine had natural streaks of white in her hair. As the insanity with Flagg and Harold increased, her hair went completely white. She and Harold were responsible for the bombing of the Free Zone Committee. She became pregnant with Flagg's child after she deserted Harold, which drove her completely insane. Nadine died when Flagg threw her off the balcony in a rage, killing his child as well.

It was her last effort to resolve the mess she had made.
15. Harold had originally been known as the "fat kid" and had grown up an outcast. He loved Fran, but ended up with Nadine instead and succumbed to his bitterness and hatred. What was Harold's nickname among his Free Zone peers?

Answer: Hawk

Harold built the bomb that almost destroyed the Committee and killed Nick and Sue Stern. He had become influenced by Flagg and Nadine. When he and Nadine left the Free Zone, Harold's motorcycle crashed and Nadine left him there to die. Since Flagg didn't need Harold anymore, he had discarded him. Before Harold shot himself, he realized that he had done wrong and left a note trying to explain this.

He signed it with his new nickname, Hawk.
