Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Trashcan Man has been called several names; which of the following has he never been called?

Answer: He has been called all these names

Although Trashcan Man's real name is Donald Merwin Elbert, (Steven King does mention his full name several times), he is more commonly known as Trashcan Man. Carley Yates, a kid from Trash's youth, nicknamed him Trashcan Man, Trash, Trashy, Torchy, Loony and Halfwit.

As a child the name Trashcan Man was a cruel, derogatory nickname. After he arrives in Las Vegas, Trash and Trashy becomes who he is, it's no longer just a nickname; Donald Elbert no longer exist but in his place is Trashcan Man.
2. Who are Donald's (Trashcan Man) parents?

Answer: Wendell and Sally Elbert

When Trash was five years old his father, Wendell, was in the O'Toole's (local bar) when he went insane. He killed the bartender and then went home and killed Trash's two older brothers and his sister. His mother, Sally, was able to save Trash and fled.

Sheriff Greeley shot and killed Wendell, then later married Sally. Sally divorced him after he arranged to have Trash sent away to an institution.
3. After the plague those that survive are either heading towards Boulder or Las Vegas. Trashcan Man is going to Las Vegas. On his journey there, which state made him feel uncomfortable, as if there was something wrong with the state?

Answer: Nebraska

Travelling towards Las Vegas, riding a bicycle, Trash covered over 400 miles of Nebraska in three days. As with all the other post plague survivors Trash experienced very vivid dreams. His dreams were of the Darkman, which were comforting dreams to him. Upon his arrival in Nebraska he felt that there was something wrong with that state. Something that made he feel uneasy and afraid.

The Darkman dreams ceased and instead he dreamed of an old woman (Mother Abigail); he was in the cornfields, watching her house and her singing gospel songs.

He is unable to move and is feeling hatred; the old woman then looks right at him and says "weasels in the corn" and at that Trash turns into a weasel. It wasn't until Colorado that the dreams of the Dark Man returned.
4. When Trashcan Man was seventeen he committed a crime that sent him to prison. What did he do?

Answer: burnt down the Methodist Church

When Sheriff Greeley and the judge agreed to send Trash to the institution in Terre Haute, he was 11. After two years of electric shock treatments, he was cured (or so the doctors claimed) and was released. When he was 17 he took a five gallon can of gasoline to the Methodist Church.

The next day he was arrested and sent to the Northern Indiana Correctional Center for boys. The following year he was transferred to a prison for adults. He remained there for several years until the plague came.

After everyone died Trash just left and decided to return home.
5. In Colorado, Trashcan Man meets up with the Kid. They are both going to Las Vegas. Eventually Trash decides he has to get away from the Kid; how does he manage this?

Answer: Flagg sent wolves to stop the Kid and help Trash leave

The Kid is a Coors loving, reckless driving, loud and opinionated person. He is going to Las Vegas as well and decides that Trash can go along with him. He terrorizes Trash, and finally Trash knows he has to get away from The Kid. Flagg (the Dark Man) tells Trash (in a dream) to be patient that he will help him.

He sends wolves that trap The Kid in a car, and will not allow him to leave. Presumably he will stay there until he dies. Some of the wolves then lead Trash away, back on the road to Las Vegas.
6. Lloyd offers Trashcan Man a necklace, from Flagg, a black jet stone with one tiny red flaw. This was at a Crucifixion. Who was being crucified and why?

Answer: Heck Drogan, drug addict

Trash automatically feels at home in Las Vegas and with the people who have sided with Flagg. The necklaces (Lloyd has one as well) are only given to those that Flagg holds in the highest regards, people whom he places high in his order of things. Trash has a moment of doubt before he accepts the necklace, with the thought that this was his last chance to be Donald.

But he accepts the necklace and Donald is gone. Heck Drogan is a drug addict, and in the new Las Vegas drug addiction will kill you, if not the drugs then the being nailed to a cross and left there for dead will. Drogan tries to get Trash to help him, to tell everyone that he will get clean and sober but Trash pretends that he doesn't know who he is and participates in the crucifixion of Drogan, helping with the raising of the cross.
7. 99% of the world's population dies, and after Trashcan Man returns to Powtanville there is no one there to stop him from doing whatever he wants. What he wants to do is set the oil tanks on fire. What is the name of the company that owns the oil tanks?

Answer: Cheery Petroleum Company Inc

After everyone in prison dies and he returns home, he is sitting at the Scubba-Dubba Car Wash, eating a peanut butter, jelly, tomato and gulden mustard sandwich. Trash can see the Cheery Petroleum Company Inc's oil tanks. They are huge and white, and he decides to blow them up.

There are over nine dozen oil tanks, and when they exploded, Trash thought they sounded like firecrackers going off. It took over two hours for all of them to blow up.
8. Where did Trash get the A-Bomb from?

Answer: Nellis Air Force Range

After Trash blows up the fuel truck and destroys Indian Springs, he decides that redemption is impossible but atonement is possible. In his mind bringing Flagg the "big one" or the "big fire" is his way of saying he is sorry, it is his atonement. He goes to Nellis Air Force Range, finds an atomic bomb.

The warhead is stamped with the number A161410USAF on its nose. Suffering from severe radiation poisoning, Trash then delivers the bomb to Flagg at Larry and Ralph's execution. This leads to the end of Las Vegas because the hand of God sets the bomb off.
9. Larry and Ralph are about to be executed, they are handcuffed and hung up. The Las Vegas crowd is watching; what happens as a direct result of Trashcan Man?

Answer: the hand of God appears and detonates an atomic bomb

Mother Abigail sent Larry, Glen, Stu and Ralph on a journey, they had to walk to Las Vegas. Larry and Ralph are the only ones that make it to the end, Stu had an accident on the road as was left behind, Glen made it to Las Vegas but was killed in the jail.

They are to be crucified in front of the people of Las Vegas on Flagg's orders. As Flagg is reading off their list of "crimes" Trash arrives with an atomic bomb. He has returned to Las Vegas with his present and to ask for forgiveness, to him this is his atonement for destroying the air fields in Indian Springs.

The hand of God comes out of the sky and detonates the bomb, destroying Las Vegas. This is the good versus evil, and although Trashcan man is aligned with the "evil" side, he ultimately assists the "good" side to win this battle.
10. Trashcan Man started his fascination with fire at a young age. It was during which grade that the adults found out that the person responsible for setting the fires was Trashcan Man?

Answer: third grade

Trash started setting fires while he was in the first or second grade; when he was in grade three the adults found out that it was him. By the fourth grade Trash was using people's mailboxes for his fires. He burnt Mrs. Semple's pension check, a fact that some would never let him forget. During the fifth grade year he set a deserted house in Sedley on fire. After that his step-father Sheriff Greeley had a judge order Trash into treatment.
