Our first picture of the world that Brandon Sanderson has created is a dreary one: Skaa slaves working their lord's fields; ash ever falling from the sky, dimming the power of the sun and filling every corner of the land; mysterious mists that come every night, hiding mistwraiths. This is life under the iron fist of the Lord Ruler, who has reigned for a thousand years.

Answer: The Survivor of Hathsin

It was commonly known that Kelsier had been sent to the Pits of Hathsin by the Lord Ruler to delve in the depths for atium, the most valuable known metal and the measure of wealth in the world. That he had survived this ordeal and escaped was something that had never been done before by anyone.

Answer: Camon

Camon uses Vin for her 'luck', or her ability to affect other people for favorable decision-making. She is able to dampen or soothe emotions, making them less suspicious or less hostile, and more susceptible to what Camon wants of them. Unknown to Vin at this time is the fact that this ability is only a small part of what she is capable of.

Answer: Dockson

Kelsier and Dockson enter the thieves' den and simply take over. Kelsier uses his allomancy to soothe everyone's emotions and prevent them from reacting unpredictably, and he also puts Camon out of commission by slamming him against the wall with an allomantic 'push'.

Answer: Brass

The ingestion and 'burning' of various metals allows Mistings and Mistborn to utilize the powers that are inherent in the world's magic system. From what everyone knows (at this point), there are ten different allomantic metals. Most people that have allomantic abilities can only use one type of metal, but the rare Mistborn can use all of them.

It is revealed that Kelsier noticed Vin not only acting as a Soother (burning brass), but he also caught her acting as a Rioter (burning zinc). He and Dockson had gone to observe her in action after Kelsier's brother Marsh was on the receiving end of one of Camon's scams. Since Mistings can only use one metal, Kelsier confirmed that Vin was a Mistborn.

Answer: Yeden

Yeden is the leader of the skaa rebellion against the Lord Ruler. Over the Lord Ruler's millennial rule, there have been many attempts at rebellion, but never to any measurable success. Skaa and noble bloodlines are forbidden to be mixed, for the reason that allomantic abilities are carried down through noble genes. Thus, not only do nobles hold the economic power, they also hold the allomantic power, making the chances of successful rebellion remote, to say the least.

Answer: A carpentry shop

Clubs (real name Cladent) is not only a Smoker Misting, but also a master carpenter. While most skaa are used as manual labor on outlying nobles' estates, many skaa that live in cities like the capital Luthadel are craftsmen or even artisans. As a master carpenter, Clubs keeps apprentices, providing the perfect alibi for a group to be living at the shop.

Answer: Hazekillers

Hazekillers are not allomancers, but rather they are regular men specially trained to fight allomancers. They ensure that they carry no metal for Mistborn to affect, and their weapons are also metal-free. They are trained to fight in concert with each other, and they have knowledge of the abilities of a Mistborn, and how to combat those abilities. All of that said, a skilled Mistborn will find a way to prevail, as Kelsier does in this instance.

Answer: Start a House war

Kelsier put the benefits of their plan into words, "If we can turn the houses inside Luthadel against each other, we can bring down the city. Mistborn will start assassinating house leaders. Fortunes will collapse. It won't take long before there is open warfare in the streets. Part of our contract with Yeden states that we'll give him an opening to seize the city for himself. Can you think of a better one than that?"

Answer: Lady Valette Renoux

The real Lord Renoux, Valette's supposed uncle, had been replaced by an imposter, and was unable to make an appearance in Luthadel himself, for fear that another noble would realize. Originally, the role was to have been filled by Dockson, as Renoux's nephew, but Dockson was already too well known in Luthadel, and had once been punished for impersonating a noble.

Answer: Terris

Sazed's race have taken it upon themselves to preserve the knowledge of the land, especially that knowledge that the Lord Ruler has tried to suppress over the centuries. They have an ability akin to allomancy, called feruchemy.
Essentially, they are able to store up attributes of themselves within different types of metal; things like acuity of vision, body mass, strength, health, and knowledge, among others. They are then able to call upon those stored attributes at need.

Answer: Iron and steel

Each of the listed pairings of metals correspond to each other; a 'push' and a 'pull.'

Tin: enhances senses (Tineye) - Pewter: enhances physical abilities (Pewterarm / Thug)
Zinc: riots emotions (Rioter) - Brass: soothes emotions (Soother)

Answer: Elend Venture

Elend is the heir to House Venture, the only son of his ruthless father, Straff Venture. Elend is a philosopher, preferring to spend time in his books and in discussion with his friends than schmoozing at a party. In that way he is a disappointment to his father, who wants his son to be more concerned with the fortunes of their House.

For someone of Vin's lowly (assumed) stature, even considering the idea of speaking with someone of such an elevated social station is nigh unthinkable. That point is quick to be noted by others at the ball.

This first meeting begins a relationship between the two of them that grows throughout the story.

Answer: Kredik Shaw

Kelsier only takes Vin along because she tells him that she will only follow him anyways. His intention is to effect a surprise assault on the keep, hoping to accomplish what he had failed the first time (when he was captured and sent to the Pits of Hathsin). That time, they had been betrayed by someone, and the planned assault failed.

The goal was to penetrate into the inner sanctum of the Lord Ruler, where he would spend hours of every day, to find out what secret reason might be there; a possible weakness or store of atium or something.

Answer: Spook - Rioter

Spook, whose real name is Lestibournes, is actually a Tineye, meaning that he has the ability to increase the sensitivity of all of his senses. Spook is from far to the east, and speaks with a dialect which is difficult to understand.

Answer: Shan Elariel

An epic battle ensues, and Vin finds herself at a distinct disadvantage fighting against two Mistborn. Even after managing to disable the male Mistborn, Vin finds herself fighting Shan, a more experienced Mistborn, and one who has atium to burn.

Atium, one of the two 'god' metals, gives the Mistborn the ability to see multiple possible futures a few seconds in advance (and the mental ability to process all that information). The only way to fight a Mistborn with atium is to have atium to use against him or her.

Vin manages to get around this by making an action choice without any thought, so that even she did not know what she would do until it was done - the atium enhanced Shan did not see it coming.

Answer: He is turned into a Steel Inquisitor.

At first, the members of the crew only know that Marsh has disappeared, and that a lot of blood is found at the place where he was supposed to meet the crew and pass information. By the end of the story, though, Marsh is revealed to have been transformed into a Steel Inquisitor - through the process called Hemalurgy, where spikes of different types of metal are pierced into the body, simulating the effects that come naturally through Allomancy.

Answer: Kelsier frees the prisoners, but is killed by the Lord Ruler.

Kelsier tried to use the 'Eleventh Metal,' but it did not have the effect that he thought it would. Instead, the Lord Ruler casually takes one of the spears from his body and uses it to skewer Kelsier. So much for the grand plan to overthrow the Lord Ruler and the Final Empire. It seems as though all is lost, and not much story left to tell.

Answer: Rashek

The prophecy that the Hero of Ages would come to save the world from the Deepness, a mysterious threat never fully explained in the logbook, was a Terris prophecy. Rashek, a hotheaded Terrisman, killed the prophesied Hero because he was NOT a Terrisman, as Rashek thought the Hero should be. Throughout the book, the narrative of the Hero of Ages is revealed as italicized scripts beginning each chapter. Later, the reader learns that it is a copy of a text held in the Lord Ruler's inner sanctum; a journal describing the events leading up to that fateful event a thousand years ago.

Answer: Feruchemy & Allomancy

When Vin realizes that the Lord Ruler was Rashek, the Terrisman packman, and not the Hero of Ages, she also realizes that he has the magical ability of Feruchemy in addition to the incredibly powerful Allomancy. It is that Feruchemical ability, combined with the Allomantic ability, which has allowed the Lord Ruler to live so long, and to survive seemingly fatal attacks in the past.

Vin inexplicably draws strength from the mists surrounding her, and pulls the bands out of the Lord Ruler's body. Subsequently, the Lord Ruler ages before her eyes, dying in moments.
