Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Eyes of the Deity" ("Die Augen der Gottheit"): An American movie star seeks Poirot's help in this affair about a diamond or two. Which short story is it?

Answer: "The Adventure of 'The Western Star'"

The German title refers to the reason why the movie star seeks out Poirot: the "Western Star", a precious diamond that she was given by her husband, was supposedly stolen from the statue of a deity. The eyes of that deity were represented by two diamonds.
2. "The Red Bathing Suit" ("Der rote Badeanzug"): Both the German and the original English title point to the vital clue that enables Miss Marple to get to the core of this short story. Which is the English title?

Answer: "The Blood-Stained Pavement"

This is one of the "Thirteen Problems" from the short story collection of the same name. Joyce Lemprière, the artist and Raymond West's love interest, is the one to tell this particular story.
The vital clue mentioned in the question is of course the fact that you would not notice blood on a red bathing suit, but if you hung that bathing suit out to dry, the blood would drip on the pavement... where an artist would automatically paint it in her picture of the street.
3. "The Outwitted Spiritualist" ("Die überlistete Spiritistin"): An elderly man falls under the influence of a spiritualist, and his rightful heirs fear for their inheritance. Which short story is this?

Answer: "Motive vs. Opportunity"

The spiritualist in the title is Mrs. Eurydice Spragg, who is trying to con an elderly man into leaving his fortune to her and her husband. But she is indeed outwitted... and only Miss Marple spots the similarities to a mischievous little boy from St. Mary Mead and thus discovers how a blank page ended up in the testament envelope at the solicitor's office.
4. "Escalator to the Grave" ("Rolltreppe ins Grab"): A key scene in this supernatural short story does indeed take place on an escalator. Which story is it in English?

Answer: "The Call of Wings"

"The Call of Wings" is a story from "The Hound of Death", a short story collection where Agatha Christie experimented with the supernatural. While some stories have a normal solution, after all (e.g. "Wireless", "The Mystery of the Blue Jar"), there are a number of stories that really deal with ghosts, angels, and genuine mediums. "The Call of Wings" is one of those.
5. "Even Punctuality Can Kill" ("Auch Pünktlichkeit kann töten"): A shorter version of this story is "The Second Gong". Which is the correct English title for the full-length version of this short story?

Answer: "Dead Man's Mirror"

"Dead Man's Mirror" is more of a novella than a short story. The German title is a bit misleading, as it isn't actually his punctuality that kills the unfortunate victim here. Punctuality is a major plot point, though, as the victim was obsessed with it and was never late for anything.
6. "The Pin" ("Die Stecknadel"): Why was the murder victim only wearing a kimono in the middle of the afternoon? It takes the wits of Miss Marple to discover the answer in which short story?

Answer: "Tape-Measure Murder"

The German title is very succinct and to the point, as the eponymous pin is indeed the vital piece of evidence Miss Marple needs to get to the bottom of this.
7. "Cucumber" ("Gurke"): Since "cucumber" is actually used as a code word in this short story, you shouldn't need any more clues as to which it is in English. Care to tell me the title?

Answer: "Mr. Eastwood's Adventure"

The German title here could hardly be any more precise or suitable, if somewhat bewildering when seen out of context. ;)
8. "Poirot Goes Stealing" ("Poirot geht stehlen"): Aptly named, this short story has Poirot breaking and entering a house to retrieve a letter. Which one am I talking about?

Answer: "The Veiled Lady"

The veiled Lady turns out to be not as ladylike as Hastings thought when he first saw her. But it takes some illegal action on the part of Poirot to realize that.
9. "The Beautiful Face" ("Das schöne Gesicht"): The English title of this short story featuring Harley Quin and Mr. Satterthwaite also references the beauty of a girl, but unlike the vague German title, it alludes specifically to a woman who was regarded as the most beautiful one in Ancient Greece. Can you spell out the English title?

Answer: The Face of Helen

From "The Mysterious Mr. Quin".
10. "The Clock Was a Witness" ("Die Uhr war Zeuge"): In this case, it is actually two broken clocks, and they both indicate a different time when the murder took place. Mr. Satterthwaite and Harley Quin investigate. Which story is it?

Answer: "The Love Detectives"

Although this story features Harley Quin and Mr. Satterthwaite, it is not contained in "The Mysterious Mr. Quin" but in "Problem at Pollensa Bay". However, it was actually the first Mr. Quin story ever (first published in a magazine in 1926).
