Write Down What You Saw... Trivia Quiz

Agatha Christie frequently used the first-person narrative in her novels, usually provided by people who were involved in the investigation and then "asked" to write down what happened. Here are ten such narrators. Can you identify them all? Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A young historian and book author gets involved in the business of "The Pale Horse", and quite by accident. Being an author, it is perhaps only natural that this person ends up writing down what was seen. What is the narrator's name in this book?

Answer: Mark Easterbrook

Mark Easterbrook witnesses two girls fighting in a coffee bar in Chelsea, noticing that one is pulling out the other's hair by the handful. A few days later, the girl whose hair was pulled out is dead. When Mark stumbles across the girl's name again, this time in connection with a crime, he wants to know more, and so it begins.

"The Pale Horse" is a standalone novel which seems to deal with the supernatural, but like some other Christie novels, it has a very mundane and down-to-earth solution. It is one of my favorite Christie books and I must have read it at least ten times already.
2. A young pilot recovering from injuries sustained in a plane crash moves to the quiet town of Lymstock together with his sister. But soon he finds out that there is a lot more going on there than is first apparent. His light-hearted narration of the goings-on in Lymstock is recounted in "The Moving Finger". What is the narrator's name?

Answer: Jerry Burton

Jerry and Joanna try their very best to fit in at Lymstock and to get along well with their neighbors. But when they find out about a certain poison-pen problem that has been troubling the village, and it all culminates in the death of a woman, Jerry can no longer hide his interest. Being an invalid on the mend, he doesn't really have anything else to do, anyway.

"The Moving Finger" is a Miss Marple novel, but Miss Marple does not appear until at least two thirds of the way through the novel. Nevertheless, it is an enjoying read with engaging characters and an intricate solution in the best of Christie traditions.
3. The ambitious, adventurous young narrator of "Endless Night" tells us the story of Gypsy's Acre, love at first sight, and the descent into madness. Name the narrator, please.

Answer: Mike Rogers

"Endless Night", a standalone novel, is not so much a detective story as it is a psychological study with a lot of atmosphere and some very memorable characters, especially Mike Rogers and Rudolf Santonix.
4. After the "Murder in Mesopotamia", Poirot and Dr. Reilly persuade the reluctant nurse to write an account of what happened. She complies, after stating that she has no experience in writing. Needless to say, her account is a thoroughly enjoyable read! Who is she?

Answer: Amy Leatheran

For an inexperienced writer, Nurse Leatheran sure did a splendid job! "Murder in Mesopotamia" is a less glamorous "Death on the Nile", but hardly any less ingenious. Like its more famous cousin, it has an exotic setting, an interesting victim, a closely confined group of suspects, and a solution nobody expected.
5. Parts of the events in "The Clocks" are narrated by a young secret agent (ostensibly a marine biologist) with an "animalistic" last name. Who is he?

Answer: Colin Lamb

Believed by Christie experts to be the son of Superintendent Battle, Colin Lamb is investigating a person of interest when he has a strange meeting involving a screaming girl, a number of clocks, a blind lady, and a dead man in the living room. The plot of "The Clocks" is quite convoluted, but in a meta-level sort of way, that very fact is actually part of the solution.

Agatha Christie was tired of Poirot by the time of writing "The Clocks", which is why she confined him to his flat for the entire duration of the story and preferred to focus heavily on Colin's side of things.
6. Which early Christie novel, set in the picturesque village of St. Mary Mead, is narrated by the Rev. Leonard Clement?

Answer: Murder at the Vicarage

"Murder at the Vicarage" was the first full-length Miss Marple novel, and it catapulted the sweet but astute old lady to instant popularity. Eleven Marple novels would follow, with the Reverend Clement and his wife Griselda making appearances in some of them.
7. The somewhat unreliable narrator in "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" is called James Sheppard, but what is his profession?

Answer: doctor

Doctor Sheppard is Watson to Poirot's Sherlock Holmes in this famous novel, which revolutionized the genre due to its ingenious twist ending. "Roger Ackroyd" marked the first of many attempts of Poirot's to retire, although usually these attempts did not involve moving into the country and growing vegetable marrows.
8. An early adventure novel by Christie relies on two characters to narrate the story: Anne Beddingfeld, who recounts most of the chapters, and Sir Eustace Pedler, whose diary is used to fill in the gaps. Which is the novel?

Answer: The Man in the Brown Suit

"The Man in the Brown Suit" is a typical early adventure novel featuring a bold and daring heroine, a love story, sinister business, and the occasional dead body. The narrative is quite clever, and the two different perspectives from the two narrators save the book from any possible mediocrity.
9. The son of an Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard, the narrator in "Crooked House" is all but predestined to get involved in solving the murder of wealthy family patriarch Aristide Leonides. What is his name?

Answer: Charles Hayward

Another reason for Charles Hayward's involvement in the case is, of course, the fact that his fiancée, the dead man's granddaughter, believes they cannot get married until the whole affair is cleared up.

Agatha Christie named "Crooked House" her favorite book, together with "Ordeal of Innocence".
10. Let's end this quiz with the most famous Christie narrator of them all. Can you tell me the name of Hercule Poirot's most loyal friend and faithful chronicler?

Answer: Arthur Hastings

Arthur Hastings was Poirot's loyal friend for his entire career as a private detective. Even though Agatha Christie grew tired of him and had him shipped off to Argentina after the second novel, Hastings would come back occasionally and "go hunting" with his old friend. He was there when Poirot faked his death in "The Big Four" and also when he died for real in "Curtain".

Hastings is described as a gentleman with a big heart and a weakness for women with chestnut hair, but also as a courageous and faithful friend, even if his intellectual abilities are not quite what he would like them to be, to put it mildly. He married Dulcie Duveen, whom he met during the events described in "Murder on the Links".
