Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Anyone who murdered Colonel Protheroe would be doing the world a service". Who says this?

Answer: Reverend Leonard Clement

Reverend Clement is the Vicar of St Mary Mead. Colonel Protheroe, the local magistrate, wishes to talk to him about the church funds. Colonel Protheroe lives at Old Hall with his second wife, Anne, and his daughter from his first marriage, Lettice.
2. Who lives right next door to the vicarage?

Answer: Miss Jane Marple

Miss Marple is the typical spinster, and is a keen gardener and bird watcher. Nothing much escapes her notice. The Vicar comes across Lawrence Redding, the artist, kissing Anne Protheroe - Colonel Protheroe's second wife - in the studio. Anne is not happy in her marriage. The Vicar talks to Mrs Lestrange, a newcomer to St Mary Mead, in the church.
3. What day does the murder of Colonel Protheroe take place?

Answer: Thursday

The Vicar is called on the telephone to see a parishioner, who is dying. Colonel Protheroe is due to come to the vicarage to discuss the church funds. Lawrence Redding is planning to go away from the village.
4. What was Lettice Protheroe doing, when her father was murdered?

Answer: Playing tennis

Colonel Protheroe is found shot in the vicarage study. Lawrence Redding goes to the police, hands in his pistol and says he did it. Lettice Protheroe does not seem distressed by her father's death. Colonel Melchett is the Chief Constable of the County and is involved in the case, with Inspector Slack, the local Inspector of St Mary Mead.
5. Which of the residents of St Mary Mead gets an anonymous telephone call?

Answer: Mrs Price Ridley

Hawes is the local curate. The telephone call accuses Mrs Price Ridley of being a wicked scandal-monger. The phone call came around the same time as when Colonel Protheroe was killed. Mrs Price Ridley heard a shot around the same time.
6. What type of car does Lettice Protheroe drive?

Answer: Fiat

Lawrence Redding is released, after Anne Protheroe also says she killed her husband. They are both lying. Lawrence wants to find out who really killed the Colonel. He takes a stone boulder to Miss Marple, for her Japanese garden. He hopes Miss Marple will have interesting information.
7. Where did the telephone call come from, that got the Vicar out of the vicarage, on the day of Colonel Protheroe's murder?

Answer: North Lodge of Old Hall

Whoever telephoned Mrs Price Ridley used the telephone in Lawrence Redding's cottage. Inspector Slack suspects Mrs Lestrange was blackmailing Colonel Protheroe.
8. What type of jewel was the earring made of, what was in the vicarage study?

Answer: Lapis Lazuli

Mary, the servant at the vicarage, threatens to give notice after Lettice Protheroe accuses her of not dusting properly. The vicar knows whom the earring belongs to.
9. How does Raymond West - Miss Marple's nephew - describe St Mary Mead?

Answer: A stagnant pool

Raymond West is staying with his Aunt Jane; he is a writer. He knows Doctor Stone, the archaeologist who is now working in St Mary Mead. Doctor Stone has gone away for a few days - Raymond West bumped into him as he arrived. He says that was not Doctor Stone. Miss Marple saw Gladys Cram, Doctor Stone's secretary, taking a suitcase into the nearby wood at midnight.
10. Who did the lapis lazuli earring belong to?

Answer: Anne Protheroe

There is an oil painting in the attic of Old Hall that has been slashed - its face is unrecognisable. Anne tells the Vicar that she plans to marry Lawrence Redding in six months. Lettice admits she planted the earring in the vicarage study, to frame her stepmother. Unfortunately the Vicar had seen both earrings after the murder.
11. Who found the suitcase in the wood?

Answer: Reverend Clement

Inside the suitcase are the trencher salts and the Charles II tazza, from Old Hall. Obviously the fake Doctor Stone is an accomplished thief. He replaced the objects at Old Hall with imitations.
12. What is Hawes suffering with?

Answer: Headaches

Doctor Haydock says Hawes is suffering from sleeping sickness too. Hawes asks the Vicar to take the service for him that evening. Hawes seems anxious that Lawrence Redding came to see him the evening before. The Vicar gets three letters from Miss Weatherby, Miss Hartnell and Mrs Price Ridley - all asking him to call in on them.

There is also an anonymous letter, which says Griselda has been seen coming out of Lawrence Redding's cottage. Griselda admits that she was once in love with Lawrence.
13. Who is the letter from, which is beside Hawes?

Answer: Colonel Protheroe

The Vicar gets a telephone call from someone confessing to murdering Colonel Protheroe. He recognises the voice as Hawes, and goes to his lodgings. Hawes has taken an overdose of sleeping pills. Colonel Protheroe suspected that Hawes was responsible for the misappropriation of the church funds. Miss Marple says that Lawrence Redding planted the letter on Hawes.
14. Who does Miss Marple say shot Colonel Protheroe?

Answer: Anne Protheroe

Lawrence hid the gun in the plant stand before the Colonel arrived at the vicarage. He phoned up the Vicar to get him out of the house. Anne purposely spoke to Miss Marple, so that Miss Marple could see she had no weapon with her. Anne crept up behind her husband in the study and shot him. Lawrence left the forged letter, removed the real one, and adjusted the time on the clock.

He later planted it in Hawe's home. Griselda and Dennis made the joke telephone call to Mrs Price Ridley.
15. Who is revealed to be Lettice Protheroe's birth mother?

Answer: Estelle Lestrange

Estelle Lestrange was Colonel Protheroe's first wife. She is dying, but came back to see Lettice. Doctor Haydock knows her well. At the end of the story, Griselda Clement is expecting her first child.
