Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these villas does not feature in "My Family And Other Animals"?

Answer: The rose-red villa

All three villas are still in existence, despite Corfu (where the book is set) being bombed during WWII.
2. Which great-aunt's letter causes the Durrells to move from the daffodil-yellow villa to the snow-white villa?

Answer: Hermione

Great-aunt Hermione was charmingly described by Larry, the eldest child, as "an old hag" and "that old harpy" and "that evil old camel", showing how caring the family were.
3. What was the name of the "honey-and tar coloured tortoise" which with Gerald became acquainted whilst staying at the daffodil-yellow villa?

Answer: Madame Cyclops

The Countess de Torro was the bald friend of Larry's who came to stay at around the same time; Lugaretzia was the hypochondriac maid; and Margo is Gerald's sister! Madame Cyclops is so named because she only has one eye.
4. What were the names of the gecko and mantis who fought an epic battle in Gerald's bedroom towards the end of the book?

Answer: Cicely and Geronimo

Cicely was eaten by Geronimo, but Geronimo survived, although his gecko friend was eaten by the two toads Gerald found shortly afterwards.
5. Which food did Achilles the tortoise go crazy about?

Answer: Strawberries

Achilles came to a sad end when he escaped the strawberry-pink villa and fell down a well-shaft.
6. Which of these names is not one of the dogs featured in "My Family And Other Animals"?

Answer: Alecko

Alecko was the gull given to Gerald by an escaped convict. Roger travelled to Corfu with the family, while Dodo, a Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and Widdle and Puke, so named after their antics on their first day with the family, were all bought on the island.
7. Who, according to Gerald, was "designed by Providence to go through life like a small, blond firework"?

Answer: Larry

It was Larry's idea to go to Corfu in the first place, but unlike in the book, Larry did not actually live with the family but with his wife Eva, who does not feature in the book. The book is not completely fact-based, with several events left out or changed in some way.
8. Who did Roger the dog bite when the scorpions escaped from the matchbox?

Answer: Lugaretzia

The scorpions were "let out" of the matchbox by Larry, who then flung them onto the table. In the ensuing mayhem, Roger bit Lugaretzia, who, being a comparative stranger, was considered by him to be the cause.
9. What was the name of the hotel that the family stayed at when they first arrived in Corfu?

Answer: Pension Suisse

The hotel overlooked the route to the cemetery, so Mother thought that the island was therefore having an epidemic, as it was unnatural to have so many people dying at once. Larry's brilliant reply to this was "There's nothing unnatural about dying...people do it all the time".
10. What is the last line of the book?

Answer: The train rattled towards England.

All these lines are last lines of chapters in the book, but the others are featured much earlier on. I hope you enjoyed this quiz on a truly fantastic book.
