Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following, who greets Scarlett at the airport?

Answer: Audrey Cheng

Paul Adams, Scarlett's father, had told her when they spoke on the phone that he'd be meeting her at the airport-at which time he'd explain the "urgent" need for her to come to Hong Kong.

But instead, Mrs. Cheng and a man named Karl meet Scarlett. "'Who are you?' Scarlett asked... 'My name is Mrs. Cheng," she said, But you can call me Audrey.'"

Mr. Lee is one of the ten surviving members of the Nexus, and currently he is in London in a meeting. Coincidentally, Matthew Freeman is at that same meeting.
2. Which of the following is Scarlett's "escort"?

Answer: Justin

As Scarlett is traveling on her own, "the airline had arranged for an escort to meet her at the plane and take her through immigration and customs... It would have been easy to find her own way-there were signs written in English as well as Chinese-but she was glad to have the company after eleven hours of sitting on her own in what had felt like outer space. The worst thing about the flight hadn't been the length or the boredom-it had been the sense of disconnection. She was going somewhere she didn't want to go, not even knowing why she was going there. What could be so urgent that her father had made her travel all this way? And why hadn't he been able to tell her on the phone?"

Susan is the name of one of the Nexus members, and Jamie and Scott are twin Gatekeepers.
3. What was the first thing Scarlett noticed about the airport, which gave her an unsettled feeling?

Answer: It's too quiet

Of course, she factors in the time:

"it was only six o'clock in the morning and perhaps there hadn't been that many international flights."

However, after a closer look at the other passengers and her surroundings, that assumption is squelched:

"The other passengers looked more dead than alive, bleary-eyed and pale. Nobody was talking... Everyone was heading the same way. They were all pouring into the main building. People might be arriving in Hong Kong but, this morning, at any rate, no one seemed to be leaving."
4. What scares Scarlett the most about immigration?

Answer: The Passport Official's eyes change color

The camera is located just above the immigration official, and seems to single Scarlett out as worthy of surveillance-but, as unsettling as that is, it is the man himself that she fears most:

"Then he reached out for his stamp, inked it, and brought it down with a bang... As the stamp hit the page, they [his eyes] seemed to flicker as if someone had blown smoke over them. Suddenly they were yellow. The pupils, which were brown a second ago, were now black and diamond-shaped. The passport official glanced up at her and smiled, and right then she was afraid that he was going to leap out of his booth and tear into her. His eyes were no longer human. They were more like a crocodile's eyes."
5. Who, of the following, lives at Wisdom Court?

Answer: Paul Adams

When they leave the airport, Karl and Mrs. Cheng take Scarlett to the building where her father lives:

"Wisdom Court stood to the east of the city in what had to be an expensive area, since it had the one thing that mattered in a place like this: open space. The building was old-fashioned, with brickwork rather than steel or glass. It was only fifteen stories high and stood in its own grounds... They went up to the twelfth floor, Karl carrying the luggage. Audrey Cheng had barely looked at Scarlett since they had left the airport, but now she fished in her handbag and took out a key that she dangled in front of her, as if to demonstrate that she really did have a right to be here."
6. What is significant about the note from Scarlett's dad?

Answer: It isn't signed

The note is short and typed, leading Scarlett to wonder if her dad's secretary wrote it up:

"He only used two fingers and usually made lots of mistakes."
7. The Nail is one of the many shops Scarlett visits.

Answer: False

It is actually where the Nightrise Corporation is headquartered.

In chapter fifteen, Audrey Cheng promises Scarlett "This afternoon I will take you into the place where your father works... We will go to Nightrise, and the chairman will tell you more" [about the "business" that called her father away from the city].
8. From the Chairman's office, Scarlett notices Hong Kong is "segmented". How many different parts of the city are there?

Answer: Two

There is Hong Kong Island, which contains "the most expensive shops and hotels."

And then there is "Kowloon, the grubbier, more down-at-heel neighbor. The two parts were separated by what had to be one of the busiest stretches of water in the world, with ships of every shape and size somehow crisscrossing around each other without colliding."
9. When Scarlett first meets the chairman, her mind compares him to two creatures. One is a poisonous snake; what is the other?

Answer: Spider

His expression seems pleasant enough, but Scarlett instinctively knows something's wrong:

"There was something very unnatural about the man... there was a dead quality to his flesh. His eyes were a very pale blue, so pale that they had almost no color at all."
10. Where does the chairman tell Scarlett her father is?

Answer: Nanjing

He estimates that Paul Adams will return home in seven days' time.

"'A week?" Scarlett was shocked. 'Can I talk to him?' she asked... The chairman sighed. 'That may not be very easy. There are some parts of China that have very bad communications. The landlines are down because of recent flooding, and there are whole areas where there's no reception for mobile phones. I'm sure he will try to call you. But it may take some time.'"

Hong Kong is where Scarlett now is.
