The market sells jade, and is just around the corner from the temple. She tells Mrs. Cheng that her reason for going is so that she can buy a gift for Amanda. After selecting a bracelet, Scarlett makes her way to the fortune-teller's.

Actually, she hesitates before the stalls, just looking, when the gray-haired woman points to one of the symbols on the mat as Scarlett got closer. It is the symbol that the Gatekeepers use, a five-pointed star!

The birds appear to be canaries or something like it, and there are at least half a dozen envelope packets on the table. There is also a jar of seeds.

There are actually two messages on the slip. The first, containing '"Good news from Fortune Bird Two", is the one that Scarlett shares with the hovering Audrey Cheng. The rest of the message reads: "You will find your true love in the month of April. Your marriage will be long and happy, and you will travel to many countries. When you are old, you will make a great sum of money. Spend it wisely."

The second message, written specifically to Scarlett, warns her to make sure that Mrs. Cheng doesn't see the page. The last two lines read: "We are your friends. Trust us if you want to leave Hong Kong alive."

The book tells us that, initially, Scarlett thought a curtain had been drawn across her window. Then she realized, as she woke up more, that whatever was obscuring the light was outside, causing her to look more closely - which is when she saw the "curtain" move, and heard the wings beating against the glass. "It was a great swarm of ... black flies. They had attached themselves to the window like a single living organism."

As if that wasn't revolting enough, or alarming enough, it wasn't even a warm summer's day, the month instead being November. Sick to her stomach, Scarlett scares the bugs away by hurling a pillow at the glass. "For a moment they looked like a long silk scarf, hanging in the breeze. Then they were gone."

The book calls the mountain "a must-see for every tourist." Apparently, the view is spectacular - but Scarlett doesn't get to enjoy it because of the pollution. This gives her an idea: the perfect way to convince Audrey Cheng to take her there again. If the weather clears up - as it miraculously does in the afternoon - then that would be her excuse.

She is what some would call a demon - and others a changeling, shape-shifter, or shape-changer. In this book, the creature is known by the latter name.

The book describes her body as being part human, part snake.

When Scarlett and Mrs. Cheng happen upon three fellow walkers, the shape-shifter's nervousness increases to the point where she begins to tell Scarlett it is time to go back. Before she can get the words out, however, a sword and a machete tear into her body, eliciting an almost otherworldly shriek from the creature. Scarlett is shocked and sickened: although Mrs. Cheng wasn't her favorite person, the Gatekeeper doesn't feel she deserved to die in such a fashion.

At the insistence of her "friends," Scarlett turned to look at the "woman" who'd been looking after her since she arrived in Hong Kong. She is horrified by the nightmarish sight.

There are two men, one Chinese and the other Japanese, waiting by the vehicle. They are waiting for Scarlett, who is riding a motorbike with the bike's rider. That way she can evade the pursuing shape-changers.

Upon seeing the open trunk, Scarlett becomes fearful. She doesn't know these people, and just because they claim to be her friends doesn't make it so.

Initially, the men try reasoning with her, but time is limited, so one of the men takes out a handkerchief and uses it to knock Scarlett out so that he and his partner can bundle her up into the trunk.

Raven is a female assassin from the "H.I.V.E." series of books by Mark Walden, while the other three answer choices are male.

Red and Draco are the men who transport Scarlett from The Peak to Kong Kok, where the three men have an apartment.

Lohan reveals this at the beginning of his lecture to Scarlett, estimating the population of Hong Kong to be around seven million.

He also tells her that, about three months before she got there, the Dark Ones initiated a takeover of the city. Some fortunate individuals, those with the money and resources to do so, fled elsewhere. "Ask them why they have gone and ... they will say they wanted a change or had new business opportunities."

Of the remaining inhabitants, most simply go about their business. The takeover unnerves them, but since they have no where to go, they try to attract as little notice as possible.

Scarlett is the one who panics upon learning that the police have come for her. Lohan angrily tells her to be strong, and not give in to the weakness of panic.

Scarlett doesn't understand at first how they were able to find her - but then she remembers the pendant that the chairman gave her. Still, she refuses to believe it was a tracking device - until, that is, Lohan reveals the living insect inside the stone.

Calm as ever, Lohan tells Scarlett to follow his instructions without hesitation. Then he leads the way out of the apartment.

There are nine of these creatures, which seem to be human but who have lifeless eyes, bare feet, and ragged hair. The knives are long and jagged, the chains hang down to the ground, and the clubs have nails attached to them. The members of the Resistance have guns - all but Scarlett are armed and ready for battle.
