Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Matt's address whilst he is living with his step-aunt and her partner?

Answer: 27 Eastfield Terrace

Matthew Freeman is the main character in Raven's Gate, and he is in fact the leader of the five. His mum and dad died in a car crash when he was eight, and he has lived with his step-aunt and her partner since then. They live at number 27 Eastfield Terrace, in Ipswich.
2. Matt's legal guardian is Gwenda Davis. What is the name of her partner?

Answer: Brian

Brian Conran is the partner of Matt's step-aunt Gwenda. He is a milkman, and Gwenda feels it's her duty to do everything for him. She puts his wants well above Matt's needs. Brian never got on with Matt, and, with Gwenda, spent all of the money that Matt's parents had left behind.
3. How old is Matt?

Answer: 14

Matt, along the with the other four of the five, are 14. It is not until the fourth book in the series, Necropolis, that he turns 15.
4. What is the name of the government project which Matt is forced to take part in as punishment for the attempted burglary at the warehouse?

Answer: LEAF

The LEAF project is a new government initiation: when a young offender commits a crime, he is made to make a decision, whether to stay and face the consequences, or be sent to live with a new guardian in the countryside. It stands for 'Liberty and Education Achieved through Fostering.'
5. What is the name of Matt's new guardian from Yorkshire?

Answer: Jayne Deverill

Jayne Deverill is Matt's new guardian who lives in Yorkshire. She has a black cat with yellow eyes called Asmodeus and lives in Lesser Malling. She is a witch, and is amongst the people who are trying to open the gate.
6. What is the name of Jayne Deverill's house in Little Malling?

Answer: Hive Hall

Hive Hall is the name of Jayne Deverill's house in Yorkshire, Lesser Malling. It is now Matt's house as well. It is just off a county lane, near to a five-way crossroads. It is a farm, mainly for looking after pigs and chopping up wood.
7. What is the name of the man that Matt meets at the Greater Malling Gazette?

Answer: Richard Cole

Richard Cole is a journalist at the Greater Malling Gazette. He always wanted to be a journalist, but there are hardly any stories to write about in Greater Malling, just weddings and funerals, so he's not enjoying it. At the end of the book, Matt moves in with him.
8. What words were written on the wall of Tom Burgess' bedroom in 'wet paint'?

Answer: Raven's Gate

Tom Burgess was murdered by one of the witches from Yorkshire. Before he died, he managed to write on the wall of his bedroom "Raven's Gate" in green paint using his hand. When Matt saw this, he looked for the police immediately, but when they arrived, someone had cleaned up the house and moved the body, so Matt looked as if he had been making it up.
9. What is the name of the nuclear power plant in the book?

Answer: Omega One

Omega One is the name of the nuclear power plant, originally built and decommissioned by Sir Michael Marsh. This is the place where Raven's Gate actually is, because it was built on top of the ancient stones which were keeping it locked.
10. What is the name of the group of people who are fighting against the opening of the gate and the Old Ones?

Answer: The Nexus

The Nexus are a group of people - eight men and four women - from all around the world, each with a different area of expertise. They are led by Susan Ashwood, daughter of the author Elizabeth Ashwood. Fabian, whose main part doesn't come until "Evil Star", is another member, who is originally from Peru.
