Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "I Am the Doorway", the main character originally had alien eyes on the pads of his fingers. At the end of the story, where on his body was the new set of eyes located?

Answer: Chest

Arthur was an astronaut who traveled to Venus and picked up something on his way back in "I Am the Doorway". Several years later the eyes appeared on his fingers. The alien presence inside him was evil and made him kill people, so he burned his hands off. The story ends with Arthur preparing to commit suicide as a new set of eyes had appeared in a circle on his chest.
2. When Ed Hamner's mother realized that he had special powers in "I Know What You Need", did she try to drown him?

Answer: No

Ed seemed to be the perfect man who knew Liz's every need and wish in "I Know What You Need". But what she didn't know was that Ed had precognitive powers and was able to make Liz love him. He also practiced voodoo and black magic and caused the death of Liz's boyfriend.

When Liz's friend Alice did some research on Ed, she found out that his mother had tried to stab him with a pair of scissors.
3. What was the punishment for the first time that Morrison was caught smoking in "Quitters, Inc."?

Answer: His wife received electroshock

"Quitters, Inc." is about a very effective treatment program for quitting smoking. Morrison, the main character, would be under constant supervision, and if he was caught smoking, his wife would be taken and receive "electroshock therapy", meaning she wouldn't quite be electrocuted, but it would be very painful. For further offenses, the penalties would increase, leading to the breaking of his son's arms and, eventually, Morrision's death. Morrison only slipped once, and the treatment was very successful, as he quit completely.
4. In "Jerusalem's Lot", what did Boone and Calvin originally think the noises in the walls were?

Answer: Rats

When Charles Boone inherited his cousin's house in "Jerusalem's Lot", he heard loud noises in the walls that he thought were rats. But as he unraveled the mysteries of the house, the nearby deserted village of Jerusalem's Lot, and his own family, he found out that the noises in the walls weren't rats, but something much worse! Now, could the location of this story be the same as Stephen King's "'Salem's Lot?" It makes one wonder!
5. Which of the following toy weapons used in "Battleground" was a "Special for Limited Time" toy?

Answer: Rocket Launcher

Renshaw was a professional hit man in the story "Battleground". After he was hired to kill the founder of a toy company, the man's mother enacted revenge by sending Renshaw a little present. The present was a G.I. Joe Footlocker with toy soldiers, helicopters, bazookas, etc.

The catch was that these toys were alive, and they attacked Renshaw, doing quite a bit of damage despite their small size. The "Special for Limited Time" toys were a rocket launcher, some missiles, and a scale-model thermonuclear weapon. Needless to say, it was the miniature nuclear weapon that did Renshaw in.
6. What holiday week was the clean up crew working in "Graveyard Shift"?

Answer: 4th of July

"Graveyard Shift" tells the story of huge mutant rats breeding in the basement of an industrial mill in Maine. A special crew was retained to work on the week of the 4th of July, their job being to clean out the basement. Instead they found rats, lots of them. A movie loosely based on this story came out in 1990, also titled "Graveyard Shift".
7. A short story sequel to Stephen King's best-selling novel "'Salem's Lot" is titled "One for the Road". What object did Tookey throw at the little vampire girl?

Answer: Bible

"One for the Road" picks up after the town of 'Salem's Lot had been burned and deserted. A city man stumbled into a bar during a snowstorm saying that this car had broken down in a nearby town, and his wife and daughter were still there. The locals figured out that he was talking about 'Salem's Lot, the town overrun by vampires, and two old-timers, Booth and Tookey, went to help him.

But they arrived too late, and the man was turned into a vampire by his wife. Booth happened to see the little girl, and she almost hypnotized him into being bitten, but Tookey saved him by throwing his Bible at the girl.
8. In "Gray Matter", which of the following was NOT a symptom Richie Grenadine exhibited after drinking the beer?

Answer: His hair turned white

Richie got some different beer in "Gray Matter", and as he drank it, it turned him into a sort of human fungus. He ended up being very sensitive to light, the apartment smelled horrible, and his body turned to a big jelly mass. Finally his son Timmy got so scared that he told some people, and when then confronted Richie, a big gray monster appeared, and it was dividing in two, just like cells.
9. In the well-known Stephen King story "Children of the Corn", was the original age of sacrifice for the children 19 years old?

Answer: Yes

"Children of the Corn" is the story of a small town in Nebraska, where the children killed the adults and lived a life of religious obsession. The corn was the center of their religion. Originally, the age that the children lived to was 19, where they were sacrificed to "He Who Walks Behind the Rows", but they had to lower the age to 18.

A movie has also been made from this story. It was released in 1988 and has spawned many sequels.
10. What was the medical reason for Billings's second child's death in "The Boogeyman"?

Answer: Brain convulsion

"The Boogeyman" is one of the scariest stories in Stephen King's "Night Shift" collection. Billings was a man with three children, and the boogeyman killed them all. Crib death was the medical diagnosis for his first child, brain convulsion for his second, and a broken neck after falling out of his crib for his third child. Billings went to a psychiatrist to tell his story, but the psychiatrist was actually the boogeyman come to finish him off! This story is scary because who hasn't been scared of the boogeyman when they were kids? These stories are only a sampling of "Night Shift".

It's a great read!
