Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what was "Thralk"?

Answer: A Dead Spirit in Life

Thralk was the dead spirit that Sabriel met on Cloven Crest. Sabriel was nearly killed because she was in Death at the time, unaware of what approached.
2. What is Touchstone's real name?

Answer: Torrigan

This is revealed at the end of "Abhorsen", where he joins in the attempt to bind Orannis. "Yrael" is Mogget's real name and "Terciel" was the name of Sabriel's father.
3. Which of these does Lirael not meet in the trilogy?

Answer: Saraneth

The bells of a necromancer are named after the Seven who made the Charter. Astarael was one of those who chose not to commit herself completely to the making. She appears here and there. Lirael meets her in the passages under Abhorsen's House in "Abhorsen". Lirael successfully binds a Stilken in "Lirael".

She encounters Orannis, the Destroyer, at the end of "Abhorsen", attempting to renew Its binding.
4. Which of these bells is NOT normally used by an Abhorsen OR a necromancer?

Answer: Astarael

Astarael throws all who hear it into the realm of Death, including the ringer. This is not particularly useful to necromancers or Abhorsens, although it is used in parts of the trilogy. Saraneth is used by both necromancers and Abhorsens, for much the same reason - it binds the Dead to the wielder's will. Mosrael is often used by necromancers as it allows the Dead to enter life. Ranna is often used by Abhorsens to quell the resistance of the Dead before banishing them.

It is the sleeper.
5. Which of the following is not in the rhyme at the end of "Lirael"?

Answer: "Five for the woof..."

This rhyme tells the story of the creation of the Charter and the fate of those who opposed it. Tbe "Ninth" is Orannis, or The Destroyer. "Five for the woof" is not correct. The rhyme says "Two for the woof". The rhyme commences with "I'll sing you a song..." and closes shortly after "...lone Orannis was put out of the light".
6. Which colour do the soldiers on the Perimeter use for emergency flares?

Answer: Red

The Perimeter uses red flares. This is mentioned during "Abhorsen", when the lighthouse is attacked. Red flares are let off, but no help can come.
7. What do the Clayr see?

Answer: Possible futures

The Clayr are one of the Great Charters. Their particular inheritance allows them to experience possible futures.
8. Which does Lirael not say?

Answer: "Trying to outflank us? I wonder why."

Lirael says all of these except for "Trying to outflank us? I wonder why.", which Major Green says (Garth Nix inserts a "the major said"). She tells Lathal (Greater Dead) that "The Ninth Gate calls and you must go beyond it!". She says "Can't you feel the summons of the stars?" to Hedge. She says to Orannis "I stand for Astarael against you.".
9. Which side of the island of Abhorsen's House is the Paperwing platform on?

Answer: East

There is a map of the island at the beginning of "Abhorsen". (Page 8 in my version).
10. The last sentence in the epilogue contains the pronoun "her". Who is this?

Answer: The Disreputable Dog

This is just after the Dog (Kibeth) sends Nicholas back into Life. Lirael is not in this chapter, although she is mentioned. Sabriel is not in this chapter at all. Arielle, Lirael's mother, is dead - and almost certainly past the Ninth Gate. She does not reappear.
