Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Sabriel's father?

Answer: Terciel

Terciel's name is only mentioned once in the book. All other times he's called Abhorsen. He actually starts off the action of the book, as Sabriel receives word that he is missing, and she sets out to save him. Eventually, she finds him trapped in Death and rescues him. But, in an attempt to stop Kerrigor, the Dead creature threatening the Old Kingdom, he rings the bell Astarael to send him and Kerrigor deep into Death.

He dies a final death in "Sabriel".
2. What is Toushstone's real name?

Answer: Torrigan

His name is also only mentioned once. He is the king of the Old Kingdom in "Lirael" and "Abhorsen". He also marries Sabriel, and is the father of their two children, Sam and Ellimere.
3. On which birthday(s) did Lirael get a scar from the Dog?

Answer: 17

Although we only see Lirael when she's 14 and 19, she talks about not wanting to add a 19th birthday scar on top of one from when she was 17. She got this scar because she was being sulky, as she always is on her birthdays. This is because birthdays remind Lirael she has gone another year without obtaining the Sight, or the power to gaze into the future. All other children of the Clayr obtain the Sight at some point, but Lirael does not.
4. What shadow appears on Sabriel's face when she's dead after fighting Kerrigor in "Sabriel"?

Answer: her sword hilt

When Touchstone looks at Sabriel and realizes she's dead, he sees a cross on her face, made by the shadow of the sword hilt.
5. What bell does Ellimere, Sabriel's daughter, use while binding Orannis in "Abhorsen"?

Answer: Dyrim

Touchstone uses Ranna, Sanar and Ryelle use Mosrael, the Dog is Kibeth, Ellimere is Dyrim, Sam is Belgaer, Sabriel is Saraneth, and Lirael is Astarael. Later, Mogget(Yrael), the Eighth Bright Shiner, joins in singing. All of these people use the bells to bind Orannis the Destroyer, and keep him from destroying all Life.
6. What were the signs on the door when Lirael was going through the tunnels on her 19th birthday in "Lirael"?

Answer: golden stars, golden towers, and silver keys

The golden stars are the signs of the Clayr, the golden towers are the symbols of the kingdom, and the silver keys represent the Abhorsen. The symbol of the Wallmakers are silver trowels.
7. What is the name of the chapter in which Hedge is forever abolished?

Answer: The Ninth Gate

In the chapter "The Ninth Gate" Lirael uses the dark mirror to look into The Beginning to discover how to defeat Orannis. Once she is done with the Dard Mirror, Hedge appears at the precipice of the Ninth Gate. Lirael and Hedge then fight, Hedge hoping to kill Lirael. Then, Hedge trips and falls backwards, looking into the stars that are the Ninth gate, and he dies forever.
8. When Sabriel and Touchstone are in Nestowe in "Sabriel", what kind of Dead creature does Sabriel banish into Death?

Answer: Mordaut

Mordauts inhabit a body and slowly suck the life out of it. In "Sabriel" this Mordaut was inhabiting the body of a fisherman in Nestowe. Sabriel sensed a dead creature and soon found the source; the Mordaut. Though the host body of the Mordaut was lost, Sabriel banished it into death before it could do further harm.
9. How many steps does Mogget say lead down to the reservoir?

Answer: 156

In "Sabriel" Touchstone tells Sabriel there are about 150 steps and Mogget states that there are in fact 156. The Reservior is the place in Belisaere where the Great Charter Stones reside. Also, the last Queen of the Old Kingdom was murdered there by Kerrigor, and Sabriel's father died there in "Sabriel".
10. On which floor is the Observatory in Abhorsen's House?

Answer: 5

The observatory is in the top floor of the tower. In "Sabriel", Sabriel uses it to view the geography of the Old Kingdom, as she could not remember it from her childhood.
11. What does Nehima, the name of Lirael's sword, mean?

Answer: Forget Me Not

Binder is the name of Nehima's sister sword, owned by the Chief Librarian. Lirael uses it to bind the Stilken. "Remember me" is part of the inscription on Nehima. The full inscription on Nehima is "The Clayr Saw me, the Wallmakers made me, my Enemies Remember me." And yes, there is a reference in the book to the difference between "Forget Me Not" and "Remember Me". Lirael and the Dog discuss it once Lirael leaves the Clayr's Glacier.
12. True or false: Sabriel forbade Mogget to ever use his human form.

Answer: False

Mogget can only be human if the Abhorsen gives him permission. Mogget says that Sabriel hasn't given permission very often, but she hasn't forbidden him to use the form. He also says that Sabriel's father let him use this form all the time. The first time we see Mogget's human form is in "Abhorsen", when Mogget escapes from Astarael under the well at Abhorsen's house.
13. What three Charter-skins is Lirael able to weave?

Answer: barking owl, russet bear, ice otter

The two Charter-skins we see Lirael use are the barking owl and the ice otter. She uses the otter skin on her 19th birthday, when she's travelling through tunnels in the Clayr's Glacier. She uses the barking owl skin twice, once when she flies to Nick at the Red Lake along with the Dog, and another time when she weaves a giant owl skin to carry Sam close to the Wall.
14. What is the chief librarian's name?

Answer: Vancelle

Lirael "borrowed" Binder, a sword, from Vancelle to bind the stilken she let out in the Library in "Lirael". Filris is the healer that Lirael goes to after she locked the Stilken in a room and hurt her throat speaking a master Charter mark to seal the door. Annisele is the girl in the beginning of Lirael who gains the Sight. Imshi is one of Lirael's fellow librarians, but not the chief.
15. What was the name of the greater dead creature that Sabriel banished at Cloven Crest?

Answer: Thralk

Lirael sees Lathal, Drubas, and Sonnir on her journey to the Ninth Gate in "Abhorsen". Thralk tries to kill Sabriel's body in Life while she is in Death in "Sabriel". In fact, Sabriel is getting directions to Abhorsen's house from her mother-sending, when the mother-sending warns Sabriel of danger to her body in Life. Sabriel emerges out of Death just in time, banishing Thralk into Death.
16. After a bad experience with alcohol with her two best friends, what drink could Sabriel never drink again?

Answer: brandy

Sabriel recalls her experience with brandy while drinking wine at her first dinner in Abhorsen's house in "Sabriel".
17. Who of the following people was NOT killed in the battle with Kerrigor?

Answer: Umbridge

Umbridge appears as Headmistress of Wyverly College in "Abhorsen". Sabriel sees that Jacinth's name was on the obelisk remembering those killed against Kerrigor in "Abhorsen". After the battle in "Sabriel", Sabriel looks around and sees Horyse dead. Greenwood was the teacher of magic at Wyverly in "Sabriel", but Sabriel realizes Greenwood is dead in the middle of the fight with Kerrigor.
18. Who says the following quote? "Run! Run away, Chlorr No-Face!"

Answer: Mogget

When Sam and Lirael are winning a fight against the Greater Dead creature/necromancer Chlorr in "Abhorsen", Mogget jumps out and yells this to Chlorr. She does run away, and understandably, Sam and Lirael are not pleased with Mogget. When Mogget is asked to explain his actions, he says, "Chlorr was always overcautious, even when she was an A... alive." Because of this little slip of the tongue, I'm led to believe that Chlorr was once an Abhorsen.
19. What is the Eighth Gate in Death?

Answer: a wall of darkness

A reverse waterfall is the Fifth Gate. Patches of fire are in the Eighth PRECINCT, not the Eighth Gate. Shape morphing waters are in the Fifth Precinct. The Eighth gate leads to the Ninth Precinct, which is warm, shallow, waters. The Ninth Gate is a starry sky.
20. What part of the Great Charter rhyme that Sabriel hears in Nestowe is the Abhorsen?

Answer: 2nd

First is the Royal Bloodline. Second is the Abhorsen. Three and Five are the Wall and the Great Charter Stones. Four are the Clayr.
In the Famous words of Mogget and Major Greene:
"'As for you, Private, if you mention a word of this to anyone, I'll feed you to the cat thing here. Understand?'
'Yum' said Mogget"
