'Oliver Twist' was written by Charles Dickens to draw attention to the terrible poverty and exploitation of children in the east end of London. This line was said in an orphanage where the children were given barely enough food to live on, and were expected to be grateful for it.

This story was first serialised in a monthly magazine called 'All the Year Round'. It was written in the middle of the 19th century, during the time of the Industrial Revolution in England. Although this led to increased prosperity for some, many people were very poor and Dickens felt the injustice of this.

Mr. Scrooge, an old miser, goes through a terrifying experience when he is visited by four different ghosts. This makes such an impression on him that he completely changes his attitude to life.
