Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Penned by Jane Austen, This sublime book was published, In 1813. Is this statement true or false?

Answer: True

"Pride and Prejudice" was written by Jane Austen between 1796 to 1797 at Steventon Rectory. She was about 21 then. It was initially titled "First Impressions", but it was never published under this name. It was first published, of course, under the title "Pride and Prejudice", on the 28th of January, 1813. There has been many reprints since then.
2. This fab romance is, According to BBC, The Brits' best-loved book. Is "Pride and Prejudice" really UK's best loved book (according to the poll)?

Answer: False

BBC conducted a poll in 2003, titled the "Big Read", to find out the UK's Best-loved book. "Pride and Predjudice" came second after the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Two others of Jane Austen's book made it into the Top 100: "Persuasion" at No. 38 and "Emma" at No. 40. German and Hungary also conducted similar polls, in which "Pride & Prejudice" came seventeenth and fifty-forth respectively.
3. Good Jessica Ehle, Played Elizabeth Bennet, 1995. Was Elizabeth Bennet portrayed by Jessica Ehle in the BBC's 1995 miniseries?

Answer: False

In 1995, BBC aired their sixth adaption of "Pride and Prejudice". This television miniseries consisted of six 55-minute episodes. Jennifer Ehle, not Jessica, played the role of Elizabeth Bennet. Fitzwilliam Darcy was portrayed by Colin Firth. Critical reception was positive. Jennifer Ehle received a BAFTA TV award for Best Actress, while Colin Firth received a nomination for Best Actor.
4. PART B: The Characters This blunt clergyman, Adored his benefactor, And would not shut up. To whom is this verse referring?

Answer: Mr. William Collins

Mr. Collins was a clergyman who was completely obsessed with his benefactor, the Right Honorable Lady Catherine de Bourgh. But his importance to the plot was more than just comic relief. The subplot about his marriage with Charlotte Lucas was also a satire of how some women married just for the sake of money, security and a home.
5. This fine young lady, Very nearly eloped with, Her dear brother's foe. Who is she?

Answer: Georgiana Darcy

Mr. Darcy, Georgiana Darcy's brother, was almost ten years older than her. It was because of this large age difference that Mr. Darcy was more of a father than a brother to her. After their mother died, she was put under the official guardianship of Mr. Darcy and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Mr. Wickham was involved in a feud with Mr. Darcy.

He had prior acquaintance with the lady living with Georgiana, Mrs. Younge, and made poor Georgiana so infatuated with him that he even managed to persuade her to elope with him. Luckily, Georgiana told Mr. Darcy, who put a stop to this plan of revenge.
6. A bossy mother, Whose ignorances was bliss for, Her witty husband. Who is this bossy mother this verse is talking about?

Answer: Mrs. Bennet

Mrs. Bennet, the mother of the five Bennet sisters, was a woman who had no sense and was often exaggerating, bragging, and was generally a major embarassment to her family. Her favorite child was Lydia, the most insensible one, whose personality was, in truth, quite like hers.

Her least favorite daughter was Elizabeth, because in her eyes, she was not half as pretty as Jane or half as good-humored as Lydia. Mr. Bennet thought that the girls, except for Elizabeth, were all silly. He also took a lot of delight in teasing and, in Mrs. Benett's words, "vexing" her, which Mrs. Bennet complained about a lot.
7. PART C: The Places A most pretty place, With a chimney-piece which cost, Eight-hundred a piece. What place is described here?

Answer: Rosings

Rosings was the residence of Lady Catherine de Bourgh and her daughter, Anne de Bourgh. It a very richly-decorated, large and very expensive house, as illustrated by the cost price of a single chimney-piece.
8. A decent abode, Belonging to the Bennets, Entailed to Collins. What is this decent abode from the poem?

Answer: Longbourn

The Bennet's estate was entailed to only males, which meant that only males could inherit this estate. Unfortunately, the Bennets only had five daughters and not a single son. The heir became the closest male relative, who was Mr. Collins, the blunt, stupid, and down-right hilarious clergyman.
9. A grand estate, With the finest library, And neat fishing spots. Which fine place is this?

Answer: Pemberly

Pemberly was the property of Mr. Darcy. It was like a private park, a whole ten miles around. In it was, of course, the actual residence, which was a large, stone building. A stream was also available for fishing, which Mr. Gardiner did with some company.
10. This famous couple, The story's main characters, Till death did they part. Who is this couple in this haiku?

Answer: Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet

This classic tale of social commentary and romance would never have reached its current fame and status as one of England's best-loved books without this endearing couple, Darcy and Elizabeth. Their journey for love, which spanned over two years, captured the hearts of readers all over the world. Darcy was shy, reserved, very rich and honourable. Elizabeth was very unconventional for her time, intellegent and witty, incontent with staying within the confines of society. Elizabeth had a very bad first impression of Darcy (hence the original title of the book), but came to gradually love him as misconceptions were clear. I won't ruin this excellent book for those who haven't read it yet, and for those who have, I'm sure you'll know the rest of this lovely romance. Well, so long for now, and thanks for playing the quiz. Hope you had fun!
