Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the narrator of the book?

Answer: Robinson himself

"Robinson Crusoe" is narrated from the first-person point of view.
2. In what societal class were the Crusoe family?

Answer: middle class

The author, Daniel Defoe, on the other hand, was constantly running into financial problems, and eventually died, hiding from debt collectors.
3. Why didn't Robinson's father want him to go to sea?

Answer: Both of Robinson's older brothers were killed or lost, and he did not want to lose a third son.

The older brother was killed in a war, and the other simply disappeared and was never heard from again.
4. Who captured and enslaved Robinson off the coast of Africa?

Answer: Moorish pirates

This capture, enslavement, and eventual escape occurred prior to Crusoe's shipwreck on the island.
5. How did Crusoe mark the one-year anniversary of his shipwreck on the island?

Answer: He spent the day in prayer, fasting, and asking God for forgiveness of his sins.

"Robinson Crusoe" is a story of a man without much initial concern for God who discovers, through great adversity, his need for repentence from his personal willfulness, disobedience, and pride.
6. At one point in the story, Robinson begins to lose his crops to a certain wild animal. What is this animal?

Answer: wild hares

Although the hares were eating his crops, at one point in the story Robinson does get to see penguins. This is due to how far south the island is in the Pacific, off the coast of South America.
7. What does Robinson see on the beach that fills him full of fear?

Answer: a human footprint

When Crusoe sees that the footprint is not his own, he realizes that someone, possibly cannibals from a neighboring island, have started coming to his island home.
8. What does Crusoe see in the distance that makes him think he has a chance for rescue?

Answer: an English ship

Although Crusoe thinks this might be his chance for rescue, he also has a sense, an inner warning, that something is amiss about this ship.
9. How long did Robinson Crusoe spend on this island after his shipwreck?

Answer: 28 years

In all, Crusoe was away from England for a total of 35 years.
10. How did Crusoe spend the remainder of his days?

Answer: He went on more adventures, including revisiting "his" island.

Despite the shipwreck and many, many years on his island, Crusoe still had a desire to see the world, and even went back to see how things were on his old stomping grounds!
