Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Q: What has four wheels and flies? A: The town ______ truck.

Answer: garbage

This was the first riddle of the contest, asked by Susannah. A favorite of grade-school children everywhere, and Eddie Dean, which must say something about his character.
2. What can run but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a bed but never sleeps, has a head but never weeps?

Answer: river

We say the river runs, and the place a river empties is its mouth. The bottom of the river is its bed and its origin is its head.
3. Q: What has four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs at night? A: A___________

Answer: human being

An infant crawls on all fours 'in the morning', a man walks on two legs 'in the afternoon', and the elderly often use a cane 'in the evening'. This is known as the Sphinx's Riddle, which Oepedius solved in order to lift the sphinx's plague.
4. No sooner spoken than broken. What is it?

Answer: Silence

After Eddie asked this, Blaine retorted that silence was something of which Eddie knew little. Eddie was rather disappointed Blaine guessed it so quickly.
5. Feed me and I live. Give me a drink and I die. What am I?

Answer: Fire

Roland asked this one, a fair-day riddle. These riddles Roland had learned growing up Gilead, as riddles were considered an important element of fair-days.
6. I pass before the sun, yet make no shadow. What am I?

Answer: Wind

Some people find that this riddle is poorly phrased because wind doesn't really pass the sun. It's always there, but at times it's too gentle to detect. It ought to be something along the lines of, "I pass between the sun and the earth, yet make no shadow." However, Roland posed it in its standard form, so I also let it alone.
7. Q: This is as light as a feather, yet no man can hold it for long. A: One's_____.

Answer: Breath

In my opinion, this was one of Roland's easier riddles. Blaine agrees with me.
8. Q: What may go up a chimney down but cannot go down a chimney up? A: A lady's________.

Answer: Umbrella

Technically, Blaine answered parasol. However, since everyone uses umbrellas these days, I added that as a valid answer.
9. We are very little creatures; all of us have different features. One of us in glass is set; one of us you'll find in jet. Another you may see in tin, and a fourth is boxed within. If the fifth you should pursue, it can never fly from you. What are we? Is the answer an element of language?

Answer: Yes

Okay, I gave you a hint at the end of the question. It's the standard English vowels: a, e, i, o, u. This one was actually originally written by Jonathan Swift.
10. Where may you find roads without carts, forests without trees, cities without houses? On a_________

Answer: map

And we're talking standard, old-fashioned maps here. So Google Earth doesn't count.
11. I have a hundred legs but cannot stand, a long neck but no head; I eat the maid's life. What am I?

Answer: Broom

Blaine mentions that another versions ends with 'I ease the maid's life'. Depends on whether you're an optimist or a pessimist, I guess.
12. Cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind the stars and beneath the hills. Ends life and kills laughter.

Answer: Darkness

This riddle was also used by Tolkien in 'The Hobbit' during Bilbo and Gollum's riddle game. Evidently, this is a popular riddle in games where the riddlers' lives are at stake.
13. This thing runs but cannot walk, sometimes sings but never talks. Lacks arms, has hands; lacks a head but has a face.

Answer: clock

We speak of a clock running, but never walking. Cuckoo clocks sing on the hour.
14. Q: What lives in winter, dies in summer, and grows with its roots upward? A: An_______

Answer: Icicle

Icicles melt during the warmer months. They also hang downwards from overhangs and such.
15. What have eyes yet cannot see?

Answer: Needles

These are the four answers Blaine gave. Though he intimated these are the only answers, there are others, such as Mississippi.
16. Blaine, I occur once in a minute, twice in every moment, but not once in a hundred thousand years. What am I?

Answer: M

The answer to this riddle wasn't actually given in the book. Roland gives the riddle, then time is skipped. But since Roland posed it, I figured it was fair game for a fair-day goose.
17. In a tunnel of darkness lies a beast of iron. It can only attack when pulled back. What is it?

Answer: bullet

This one has a certain ominous tone. I'm sure Jake didn't like this as he read it from his riddle book.
18. Walk on the living, they don't even mumble. Walk on the dead, they mutter and grumble. What are they?

Answer: fallen leaves

Blaine responded with fallen leaves. I guess it would be kind of difficult to walk on leaves that have not yet fallen.
19. With no wings, I fly. With no eyes, I see. With no arms, I climb. More frightening than any beast, stronger than any foe. I am cunning, ruthless, and tall; in the end, I rule all. What am I?

Answer: Imagination

Blaine says, 'The imagination of man and woman.' I shortened the answer since they're the only ones with imagination anyway.
20. Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came sweetness. Tell me the 'eater' and the 'sweetness'.

Answer: lion and honey

This riddle is from the Bible, Judges 14:14, posed by Samson. Samson had killed a lion, then later went back to its carcass and found a swarm of bees, which gave him the idea for the riddle.
