quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Tomoko concerned by the fly in her bedroom?

Answer: She can't understand how it got into the room.

Tomoko was doing her homework at the end of the summer holidays. Japan is in the middle of a heatwave, and Tomoko regrets not completing the work earlier. When the fly disturbs Tomoko, she realises she is thirsty, and goes downstairs to the kitchen, where she is killed.
2. How long had Kimura been a taxi driver?

Answer: Nearly 20 years

Kimura witnessed the death of Tomoko's friend, Shuichi Iwata, while driving his taxi. Asakawa's chance encounter with Kimura triggers the whole chain of events.
3. During the "occult boom" two years previously, roughly how many letters reporting sightings were received by the various publishers?

Answer: 10 million

This worked out at about one tenth of the population of Japan reporting supernatural sightings. Oguri is wary about allowing Asakawa to carry out his investigations into the mysterious deaths in case it triggers a similar boom.
4. Yoshino's story about the two teenagers found dead in a car would have been given more space in the newspaper, had it not been for which event?

Answer: A shipwreck

The shipwreck occured near Yokosuka, and was deemed a more important story than the mysterious deaths. Yoshino's story had to be cut down in order to make room.
5. Put the four victims in age order, from eldest to youngest.

Answer: Takehiko Nomi, Shiuchi Iwata, Tomoko Oishi, Haruko Tsuji

Takehiko Nomi was born on the 4th December, 1970. Shiuchi Iwata's date of birth was the 26th May, 1971. Tomoko Oishi was born on the 21st October 1972, and Haruko Tsuji was born on the 12th January 1973.
6. Where did Asakawa tell Yoshimi he had found the membership card?

Answer: Under the piano

Asakawa actually found the card in the pocket of one of Tomoko's outfits, but he didn't want Yoshimi to know he had been rummaging in her daughter's things. He showed her the card in order to gauge her reaction, but Yoshimi did not recognise it.
7. Which of the following was NOT one of the movies Asakawa sees on the shelf in the guest house office?

Answer: Friday the 13th

Asakawa uses "Friday the 13th" as an example earlier in the chapter, when wondering why the note which accompanied the video did not state its name. He also comments on how most of the videos are Western horrors.
8. The final section of the video had been erased, and recorded over. During this section we see an old couple sitting on a veranda, then an advert. What is the advert for?

Answer: Mosquito repellent

The tape shows a message at the end, telling the viewer how to break the curse, but this crucial part of the message cuts away to the two scenes described above. It then cuts back to the video as the lettering fades into nothing.
9. What is Ryuji a professor of?

Answer: Philosophy

Ryuji is an expert in paranormal psychology, but he is a professor of philosophy at Fukuzawa University. Asakawa states that Ryuji's brain is "wired like a scientist's".
10. While Ryuji watches the video, Asakawa goes on to the balcony and does what?

Answer: Smokes a cigarette

Asakawa promised his wife that he would not smoke inside the house again after Yoko was born, and he never has. He feels he can't do anything against his wife's wishes, because she gave him their beautiful daughter.
11. Asakawa telphones 16 seperate parties who had stayed in cabin B-4, to see which had used the video recorder. Of these 16, how many had gone to the resort to play golf?

Answer: 3

None of the three golfing parties even noticed the VCR. Seven parties saw the VCR, but didn't use it. 5 parties used the VCR to watch old films after it was too rainy for them to play tennis.
12. Which of the following was NOT a year when Mount Mihara erupted?

Answer: 1962

Mount Mihara also erupted in 1950-1951. Ryuji assumes they should look at the 1986 eruption, because he thinks a video camera was used to make the tape. He does not realise until later that they should be looking at a much earlier date.
13. How many scenes in the video had "instances of darkness" in them?

Answer: 5

These occur in the "real" scenes, according to Ryuji's chart, i.e. the scenes which Sadako actually saw, rather than thought. The instances of darkness relate to Sadako blinking.
14. While Asakawa and Ryuji are on the boat to Oshima, they try to work out why the four teenagers had not tried to break the curse, while Asakawa also contemplates what the charm might be. Which of these ideas occur to Asakawa during the boat ride?

Answer: Sadako wants someone to avenge her death by killing her murderer

He thinks that it is odd that none of the teenagers had tried to break the curse, and he worries that the charm might be impossible to carry out. He then thinks it might involve killing Sadako's murderer, and no-one tried because they couldn't bring themselves to do it.
15. How many islands are covered by Hayatso's news "territory"?

Answer: 7

Hayatso is a correspondent of Asakawa's, who used to work for the "Daily News", and who now works on all seven islands in the Izu island chain. Asakawa and Ryuji meet him on Oshima, and he also mentions Nijima, Shikinejima, and Kozushima.
16. While Sadako was studying at the theatre company, who died mysteriously after saying he was going to "storm" her appartment?

Answer: Shigemori

Shin is an actor who is studying in the theatre company in the present day. Arima is the man who talks to Yoshino, and tells him how he saw Sadako experimenting with the unplugged television. Uchimara is the current leader of the company. Shigemori was the founder of the company.

He found Sadako very attractive, and boasted about surprising her in her home at night. The next day he suddenly died in his chair.
17. How old was Sadako's brother when he died?

Answer: 4 months

Sadako was 7 when her brother was born, and she formed a very strong bond with him instantly. He died in 1954, and Sadako was devastated.
18. How long did Dr Jotaro Nagao work at South Hakone Sanitorium?

Answer: 5 years

Dr Nagao worked with Tuberculosis patients from 1962 to 1967, and while he was there he became the last recorded person in Japan to contract smallpox. He now runs a private practice in Atami.
19. On the day when Sadako was killed, what was she wearing?

Answer: Grey skirt, white blouse

Dr Nagao recalls her outfit when he talks to Asakawa and Ryuji; how he pulled up her white blouse, and how she was brushing dust off her grey skirt before the attack.
20. Which of the following was NOT one of the conditions, according to Professor Miura, in which a person must die in order for their malevolent spirit to remain?

Answer: Violence

Sadako met all three conditions: she died slowly, over a period of seven days, inside a sealed well, which was waist deep in water. Although Sadako also died in a violent manner, this was not one of Miura's conditions.
21. Which scene(s) of the video was still bothering Asakawa, even after he survived his deadline?

Answer: The old lady's speech

The old lady says "Next year you're going to have a child", but Sadako could not have children. Asakawa wonders if the comment was aimed at Shizuko, but as the whole video was created from Sadako's point of view, Ryuji thought this was unlikely.
22. For how many years did Sadako live with Takashi (in total)?

Answer: 12

Takashi was Shizuko's cousin. He cared for Sadako until she was three, then again from age 9 to age 18. Takashi loved Sadako very much, and it was he who collected her remains from Asakawa.
23. When Ryuji realises what the charm is, just as he is about to die, who does he telephone?

Answer: Mai

Mai was a student of Ryuji's, with whom he was in love. He did not call Asakawa directly, because he didn't know whereabouts in Oshima he was.
24. What time was Ryuji's deadline?

Answer: 9:49 pm

Mai tells Asakawa that Ryuji called her that night, at around 9:30, and he died at around 10 pm, of sudden heart failure. Asakawa was not expecting this news, as he thought the curse was broken, and Ryuji, Shizu, and Yoko were safe.
25. Ryuji psychically "tells" Asakawa to look in the "Epidemics and Man" book for the solution to break the curse. He also leads him to the correct page. What is this page?

Answer: 191

This page tells how a virus' instinct is to reproduce, and how it will usurp other structures to do this. This leads Asakawa to the solution that he needs to copy the tape and spread the "virus" in order to save his family.
