Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Asakawa's niece?

Answer: Tomoko

Tomoko and her three friends Shuichi, Haruko, and Takehiko were the first to watch the evil tape. In the beginning of the story, Asakawa is told about a mysterious death and realizes that it's kind of odd that all four friends died at the same time on the same day. Tomoko is Asakawa's wife's niece, and he decides to investigate the reason behind the group's deaths.
2. How old is Asakawa's daughter?

Answer: 1 1/2

Asakawa's wife is Shizu and his daughter is Yoko. In Japanese, Shizu means 'quiet', and Yoko means 'sun-child'. In the middle of the story, Shizu and Yoko end up watching the tape, and Asakawa realizes that not only is he trying to solve the mystery for his own life, but he's also trying to save the lives of his family.
3. In which month did the four original viewers of the tape die?

Answer: September

The group watched the tape on August 29th, 1990 and they died on September 5th at 10:49; exactly one week after they watched the film. After Asakawa and Ryuji watch the tape, both of them also get the same amount of time. At the end of the movie, the four original viewers of the movie decided to tape over the small bit that would save everyone's lives and prevent the viewer from dying.
4. In which cabin did the group watch the tape?

Answer: B-4

Asakawa travels to South Hakone Pacific Land to the Villa Log Cabin B-4 in order to discover what really went on when the group went there for the night. While there, he finds an unmarked tape and a VCR and he ends up getting caught in the loop. He immediately leaves the cabin and heads home.
5. Who is Asakawa's high school friend?

Answer: Ryuji

The day after he watches the movie, he shows it to Ryuji and they both try to discover the story behind the tape. They met when Asakawa was seventeen, and since then, Asakawa has become a journalist and Ryuji has become a university professor at Fukuzawa University.
6. What is the name of the mountain in the movie?

Answer: Mt. Mihara

Ryuji suggests that they go to Mt. Mihara in order to find out what needs to be done, and they set out. Before heading to the mountain, Ryuji and Asakawa go to The Tetsuzo Miura Memorial Hall and uncover some information about telepathy and psychic powers in some old files within the archives.
7. What is Sadako's last name?

Answer: Yamamura

Ryuji and Asakawa uncover some information about Sadako and her mother Shizuko, who had psychic abilities. They decide to go to Sadako's old house at Oshima, but they don't realize that a typhoon is about to hit the island. Meanwhile, Asakawa has his editor, Toshino, find more information in Tokyo.
8. The name of the theater troupe that Sadako was once a member of was named 'Theater Group Soaring'.

Answer: True

Asakawa talks to a man from Oshima named Genji who was once in love with Sadako's mother Shizuko, and he discovers that Sadako left the island and joined the Theater Group Soaring. With transportation off the island restricted because of the typhoon, Asakawa has Toshino visit the group and dig up any more information on Sadako's whereabouts.
9. What virus did Sadako get infected with?

Answer: Smallpox

Sadako visits her father at a sanatorium when he gets Tuberculosis, and gets raped by a man named Mr. Nagao who was Japan's last citizen to have the Smallpox disease. After nearly strangling her to death, he tossed Sadako into the well where the sanatorium used to be; South Hakone Pacific Land's Villa Lodges. Cabin B-4 was built over top the well, and the TV and VCR were placed directly beneath it.
Mr. Nagao is the enraged man found in the video.
10. Who is killed in the end of the story?

Answer: Ryuji

Although Asakawa isn't killed, Ryuji dies and they figure out the charm that would defeat the curse. In order to survive the curse, you need to copy the tape and show it to someone. This is why Asakawa survived; he copied the tape and Shizu and Yoko watched it.
