When the codons appear three times in a row, you need to look at the third letter in the abbreviation, as opposed to the first. When Ando finally finds the answer, it is "Mutation".

Ando thinks he can see the symbol "ko" in the window lights, which means "child". He is starting to see symbols and messages everywhere he looks, because he has spent so long trying to work out the hidden message in the code.

Miyashita arrives on a ladies' bike, complete with a basket on the front. Miyashita is a large man, and Ando finds the thought of him riding any bike odd, so when he arrives on this particular cycle, Ando finds it very funny.

The boy had drowned in a river. Ando has a feeling as soon as the new body arrives that it will be Mai, and he insists on seeing the body before the autopsy.

Mai has been dead for a few days before her body is discovered, and rigor mortis has set in. Ando decides not to stay for the autopsy because he knows the odour will be unpleasant when she is cut open, and doesn't want to remember that about her.

Mai had been laying at the bottom of an exhaust shaft, and had broken her left ankle. Her body also showed evidence that she had recently given birth, even though she had not appeared pregnant when Ando had last seen her, a couple of weeks before.

The first thing she says to Ando is "I've seen you before, haven't I?", when she is referring to the time they were in a lift together at Mai's appartment block. She says "Excuse me, but..." later on, when she wants Ando to introduce himself, and she says "I'll call on you soon with a request" as she leaves. She never asks him why he is there.

This magnification allows them to see that the strands in the virus look like little rings. They then view slides of the virus taken from Mai's body, and at a magnification of x100000 they see that most of the rings are broken.

He likens the Ring virus to Spanish Influenza. This disease was found again in 1977, but this time nobody died, because the virus had mutated. Ando uses this as an example of how the effect of viruses can differ after mutation.

Ando is trying to find out about Mai's last movements, and he speaks to Kimura because he was one of the last people to see her alive, when he collected Ryuji's book from her. Kimura noticed that she looked ill, and she told him she hadn't slept much because she had been trying to finish off the book.

Mai and Asakawa both survived longer than a week because they were of use to Sadako. Mai gave birth to her, and Asakawa wrote the RING report. The autopsies showed that Asakawa had a lump starting to grow in his artery, but Mai did not.

This experience leads him to wonder if the places and people described in the RING report were as he imagined, because he had been given very strong mental images in the report. He and Ando drive out to cabin B-4, and they are shocked to see the entire area exactly as they had both pictured it.

Takashi was Shizuki's cousin, who had helped raise Sadako, and was possibly the person who cared most about her in the world. Uchimara and Shigemori worked at the theatre school that Sadako attended. Dr Nagao is the man who raped and killed Sadako. Ando and Miyashita recognise him instantly, even though they have never seen him before, and see that he has lost his mind through guilt.

Ando misses the stop, and has to get off at a later stop and get a different train back. When he gets off, he meets the mysterious woman for the third time, and ends up spending the night with her.

Masako eats two hamburgers, and a portion of fries. She then demands an ice cream, which she spills down her leg. Ando is relieved that she did not choose somewhere more expensive to eat.

Miyashita has found some photographs of Sadako from the theatre school. When his phone card starts to run out, he tells Ando he will fax them to him. When they arrive, Ando recognises the face as that of Masako, and he passes out.

Ando fainted face-first onto the bed, and when he wakes up he is laying on his back, and Masako is looking at him. He remembers who she really is and panics, and runs out of the appartment, leaving her there.

Answer: It would take people a long time to find Mai's body

Sadako didn't realise the resemblance to the well until after she was born in the shaft. She had a suspicion that Mai would die after the birth, so she left her in the shaft so nobody would find her until later. Sadako did not mature in the shaft, she returned to Mai's appartment, and was already there when Ando searched the room.

Ando agreed to help Sadako bring back Ryuji, and not to interfere with her plans. In exchange, she brought back his son, Takanori. At the end of the book, Ando is planning to take Takanori back to see his mother, and try to reconcile his marriage.
