Ando and Mai are trying to determine how the ulcer in Ryuji's throat got there. They both find it difficult to believe that it had been there his whole life, because he had been so fit and active.

Ando is reading a report on the deaths of Shizu and Yoko, because they had the same ulcurs discovered in their bodies as Ryuji did. He recognises their names, but can't quite place where he has heard them before. Mai had already mentioned the name Asakawa to Ando when she was telling him about Ryuji's death.

Ando sees the numberplate of the car when he is looking at photographs of the accident. He can see from the numberplate that the car was from Shingawa, and that it was a rental car.

Ando threw a rock at the snake, but didn't actually intend to kill it. After that, he noticed what he guessed was the mother snake. He is reminded of this incident when he sees a snake while he is stuck in traffic, and is in turn reminded of his own son's death. He wonders if Takanori's death was because of a curse from the mother snake.

Ando has taken Ueda's computer home so he can print out the report and keep a hard copy. He sees that the report matches the story Yoshino told him exactly, and it convinces him that the story is true.

Ando was sceptical of people who claimed they could create psychic photographs, so he found psychic videos incredibly hard to believe. Ando is a scientist, so he likes things to be proven before he accepts them. In this case however, he has to just accept the idea nd move on so that he can continue reading the report.

The final page of the report says:

The nature of a virus is to reproduce itself.

Ando realises that the charm must be something different, because Shizu and Yoko still died.

Ando has already visited Asakawa and been to Mai's appartment by this point, and he doesn't return to either again. He must return the floppy disc to Junichiro, because he creates a book from the report, but this doesn't happen at this point. The biochem lab is on the way to the pathology department, so Ando stops off there to return Ueda's computer.

Ando realises it is Labour Thanksgiving Day tomorrow, so he will have a three day weekend to solve the code. He has stopped noticing holidays since the death of his son, so he always seems surprised to learn that there is a holiday approaching.

Yoshimi and Kazuko are the couple's other daughters, and Shizu's sisters. Shizu has already died by the time the note was written, so they do not mention her. Tomoko was Yoshimi's daughter, who was one of the victims of the video (the first death you witness if you have read "Ring").
