"Sense and Sensibility" Challenge Quiz

"Sense and Sensibility" is one of my favourite books. I have tried to ask questions that have not been asked in the other quizzes. If you have read the book recently they should not be too hard. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long had the Dashwood girls been living at Norland Park when their father died?

Answer: 11 years

In the opening chapter it says that Old Mr. Dashwood's sister died 10 years ago, so he asked his nephew/heir to come live with him. After he died their father only lived for one more year. Previous to that they had lived at Stanhill.
2. Where in England was Norland Park?

Answer: Sussex

"The Family of Dashwood had long ben settled in Sussex. Their estate was large, and their residence was at Norland Park..." is the opening line of the book.
3. The Dashwoods move to Barton Cottage, which is in which shire?

Answer: Devon

They move to Devonshire, at the home of Mrs. Dashwood's cousin, Sir John Middleton. They are four miles outside of Exeter.
4. Who owns Allenham Court?

Answer: Mrs. Smith

It is owned by Willoughby's aunt, Mrs Smith. Willoughby is her heir.
5. Willoughby gives three reasons for not liking Colonel Brandon. Which of these is not one?

Answer: he wouldn't sell his pointer bitch

When Elinor questions Willoughby about why he seems to dislike Brandon, he answers,"I have three unanswerable reasons for disliking Colonel Brandon: he has threatened me with rain when I wanted it fine; he has found fault with the hanging of my curricle, and I cannot persuade him to buy my brown mare." The real reason could be that he's a rival suitor for Marianne or that he feels guilt over his treatment of Eliza Williams.
6. On the day Colonel Brandon was called away to London, where was the outing planned?

Answer: Whitwell

They could only get into Whitwell with Colonel Brandon. Box Hill is an outing in "Emma", Blaize Castle features in "Northanger Abbey", and Whitehall is in London.
7. What word does Charlotte Palmer often use to describe her husband?

Answer: droll

Charlotte is a very silly woman, even when Mr. Palmer insults her she finds him very droll indeed.
8. What is Mr. Palmer's occupation?

Answer: Politician

He is running for office. Charlotte tells how "Mr. Palmer is always going about the country canvassing against the election..." and "How charming it will be when he is in Parliment!"
9. Why do the Steeles get invited to Barton Park?

Answer: They are Mrs. Jenning's cousins

They are from Longstaple near Exeter. Mrs. Jennings met them in Exeter and Sir John invited them. Sir John likes to have lots of young people around him. Lucy's Uncle, Mr. Pratt, was Edward's teacher.
10. How is Eliza Williams related to Colonel Brandon?

Answer: A distant cousin

Eliza Williams' mother was Col. Brandon's "very near relation" (most likely a first cousin) so her daughter would be a distant cousin. She (the mother) had been married to Colonel Brandon's brother, but Eliza was not his child so she is not Col. Brandon's niece. Mrs. Jennings thinks she is his "natural daughter" but she is the result of Eliza's (the mother) first affair after her divorce.
11. Elinor had to wait to be served in Gray's jewelers while a very particular customer picked out what?

Answer: a toothpick case

It was a toothpick case. The gentleman turned out to be Fanny and Edward's brother, Mr. Robert Ferrars.
12. What sort of dwelling did Robert Ferrars rave about?

Answer: a cottage

He does go on about a cottage. Even on his honeymoon he "drew up several plans for magnificant cottages." A folly is a new house that is made to look like a very old one. Blaize Castle is a folly.
13. What is Mrs. Willoughby's first name?

Answer: Sophia

It was Sophia. Willoughby mentions it when he calls on Elinor at Cleveland when they're afraid that Marianne is dying. He as good as says that he wishes his wife dead so he could marry Marianne.
14. Why is Mrs. Jennings so excited when Colonel Brandon offers the Deleford living to Edward through Elinor?

Answer: She thinks he has just proposed to Elinor

Mrs. Jennings thinks the Colonel has proposed to Elinor and cannot understand why they are not more excited. Luckily she finds out the truth before she begins to tell her friends of the news.
15. How much did Mrs. Ferrars give Edward and Elinor when they married?

Answer: ten thousand pounds

After the upset of Robert and Lucy marrying, Mrs. Ferrars forgave Edward, and when she couldn't persuade him to marry Miss Morton, she gave her consent for him to marry Miss Dashwood. And as to augmenting their income nothing was promised "...beyond the ten thousand pounds, which had been given with Fanny.

It was as much, however, as was desired and more than what was expected..." So they had an income sufficent to their needs and there was still the possibility of future inheiritence.
