Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry V died at an early age and "Henry the Sixth, in infant bands crown'd King of France and England, did this king succeed". In the first scene of "King Henry VI, Part One", news comes of a French uprising. Which uncle of the infant King says "Regent I am of France. Give me my steeled coat: I'll fight for France"?

Answer: Duke of Bedford

John, Duke of Bedford, the Regent of France during Henry VI's minority, shows up in "Henry IV" and "Henry V" as Prince John of Lancaster. Henry VI claimed the throne of France through his grandfather Charles VI. The French, inspired by Joan of Arc, rally behind the Dauphin (Charles VII), and the English are eventually driven out.
2. Meanwhile, back in England, another royal uncle, the Lord Protector, shows up with his men "in blue coats" at the Tower of London and is denied entry by the orders of the Cardinal of Winchester, who promptly shows up with his men "in tawny coats". Who is the leader of the "blue coat" party?

Answer: Duke of Gloucester

Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was the younger brother of Henry V and Lord Protector of England during the minority of Henry VI. In his scene in front of the Tower, he abuses the Cardinal of Winchester thus: "Winchester goose! I cry a rope! a rope!/Now beat them hence; why do you let them stay?/Thee I'll chase hence, thou wolf in sheep's array./Out, tawny-coats! out, scarlet hypocrite!" Gloucester eventually ends up on the losing end of a bitter power struggle and is murdered in his bed in "Henry VI, Part Two".
3. In the Temple Garden, a group of lords divide up into factions symbolized by a white rose and a red rose, respectively. This plants the seeds (to keep the botanical metaphor) for the Wars of the Roses. Who is the first to pluck a red rose in the play and threaten Richard Plantagenet, the future Duke of York, to "dye your white rose in a bloody red"?

Answer: Duke of Somerset

John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, was a grandson of John of Gaunt and a cousin of Henry V. He and his family were staunch members of the "red rose" (Lancastrian) party. Somerset's daughter Margaret married Edmund Tudor, and their son Henry Tudor became King Henry VII at the end of the Wars of the Roses.
4. At the end of "King Henry VI, Part One", after another debate among the lords, the King decides to marry Margaret of Anjou. Who pushes hard for this marriage and explains to us at the end of the play that "Margaret shall now be queen, and rule the king;/But I will rule both her, the king, and realm."

Answer: Earl of Suffolk

William de la Pole, the wily Earl of Suffolk, is soon made a Duke by Henry VI but eventually pays the price for being the unpopular Queen's favorite. He is forced to flee the Court and dies at the hands of a band of pirates.
5. In "King Henry VI, Part Three", Henry is deposed by Edward IV, the leader of the Yorkist ("white rose") party. However, a powerful nobleman previously in Edward's camp then decides to switch over to the "red rose" side and manages to bring Henry VI back to power (albeit briefly). The person who switches from white rose to red is Richard Neville, Earl of ____.

Answer: Warwick

The Earl of Warwick succeeds in restoring Henry VI to the throne briefly, but Edward IV soon regains power, and Warwick dies in the Battle of Barnet in 1471. His daughter Lady Anne Neville is married first to Henry VI's son, Edward Prince of Wales, and then to Richard III.
6. At the beginning of "Richard III", King Edward IV sends his brother George, Duke of Clarence, to the Tower because "a wizard told him that by G/his issue disinherited should be;/And, for my name of George begins with G,/it follows in his thoughts that I am he." But it is actually Richard who will disinherit his nephews and fulfill this prophecy. His name may be Richard, but he is the Duke of _____.

Answer: Gloucester

Richard III is one of the great villains of Shakespeare, he pretty much slaughters his way to the throne. The ghosts of his victims come back to haunt him before the Battle of Bosworth Field. Richard was (some say unfairly) demonized by the Tudors, who gained the throne at his expense.
7. How does the Duke of Clarence meet his end in the Tower?

Answer: Drowning

Clarence is drowned in a butt (or cask) of malmsey, a sweet wine. His ghost comes back to curse his brother Richard: "I, that was wash'd to death with fulsome wine,/Poor Clarence, by thy guile betray'd to death! Tomorrow in the battle think on me,/And fall thy edgeless sword: despair, and die!"
8. The ghost of the Duke of _____ says this to Richard III before the Battle of Bosworth Field: "The first was I that help'd thee to the crown; the last was I that felt thy tyranny".

Answer: Buckingham

Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, was a descendant of Edward III.
9. Henry Tudor claims the crown as Henry VII after Richard III dies. His title prior to his accession was Earl of _____.

Answer: Richmond

Shakespeare first introduces Henry, Earl of Richmond, as a youth in "King Henry VI, Part Three" so that Henry VI can engage in some anachronistic prophecy: "This pretty lad will prove our country's bliss. His looks are full of peaceful majesty, his head by nature fram'd to wear a crown." Since Henry VI actually had a son, it is doubtful that he would have called Richmond, a distant relative, "England's hope".
10. Fast forward to "King Henry VIII". Times have changed, titles remain the same. Which of the following is not a character in the play?

Answer: Duke of York

It is hard to keep track of the Dukes and Earls. Thanks for giving a try!
