Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both the movie and the book's preface start with the same line. Fill in the blank in this quotation: "I'd never given much thought to how I would ______."

Answer: die

In both the movie and the book, Bella is referring to her mother, who she believes she is saving by going to the dance studio to meet James. Bella's mother is played by Sarah Clarke in the film. Ms. Clarke's most famous role is most likely as Jack Bauer's co-worker Nina Myers on the TV show "24."
2. This character is introduced much earlier in the movie than he is in the book, when he and his dad pay a visit to Bella's house.

Answer: Jacob

In the book, Jake is not introduced until Bella goes to La Push for the first time. Jacob is played by Taylor Lautner in the film. According to his imdb.com profile, Taylor is not Native American, he is of French, German and Dutch descent. He also starred in the movie "Shark Boy and Lava Girl."
3. In the book, Bella goes to Port Angeles to go dress shopping with some friends. This is true in the film, but she also has another, ulterior motive - what is it?

Answer: To buy a book of Quileute legends

This is only necessary because the movie chose not to have Jacob tell Bella that the Quileutes believe the Cullens are vampires as he does in the book. Instead she does an online search of Quileute legends and finds a bookstore in Port Angeles that carries books on Quileutes.

The Quileutes are an actual Native American tribe in the state of Washington. According to Wikipedia, the Quileutes did have a legend that the first Quileute was created when a traveling shapeshifter turned a wolf into a man. I did not see any reference to the "cold ones" or vampires referred to in the books or movie though, and according to Stephenie Meyer's website, she invented this portion of the legend on her own.
4. In the movie, Bella tells Edward that she knows he is a vampire in the woods near school. Where are Bella and Edward when this scene happens according to the book?

Answer: Edward's car

The movie then condenses that scene with the scene in the meadow when Edward reveals to Bella that she is his "brand of heroin."

Edward is played by Robert Pattinson, of "Harry Potter" Cedric Diggory fame, and Bella is played by Kristen Stewart. Both actors reprise their roles in the sequel to the first movie, "New Moon."
5. In the movie, Edward climbs a tree with Bella on his back, and he also calls her this name that never appears in the book, but has been featured extensively in the trailers for the movie.

Answer: spider monkey

Although they are notoriously agile and presumably good at climbing trees, spider monkeys are pretty ugly looking animals! Very far apart nostrils are one of their main distinguishing features. Although "spider monkey" is perhaps not the most romantic nickname for a guy to give his girlfriend, they are widely believed to be the most intelligent New World monkeys.
6. In both the book and the movie, who is the least supportive of Bella and Edward's relationship?

Answer: Rosalie

Alice, played by Ashley Greene, is the most excited about Bella and Edward's relationship in both the book and the movie. Carlisle and Jasper, while perhaps not as excited as Alice, are both supportive as well.

It is is Rosalie, played by Nikki Reed, who is opposed to Bella's presence. In the book, this is explained partly by the fact that she is jealous of Bella for attracting Edward's interest when she herself could not. She also does not want Bella to become a vampire when she has the option to remain human. The movie did not attempt to explain Rosalie's unhappiness with Bella, but they do show her crushing a glass salad bowl when Bella reveals that she had already eaten, and she initially refuses to help keep the tracker away from Bella.
7. The location of Bella and Edward's first kiss is different in the book and the movie. In the movie, the first kiss happens __________ and in the book, the first kiss happens __________.

Answer: In Bella's room/near the meadow

In the movie, he also tells Bella to be very still before he kisses her. In the book, he says this while they are still in the meadow but not right before he kisses her.
8. In the movie, Charlie and Bella go out to dinner most nights at a diner. In the book, what do they do for dinner on most nights?

Answer: Bella cooks

I thought it was interesting that they cut this fact out of the movie. The fact that Bella cooks for Charlie is a pretty big part of the books and really shows how she takes care of him in a lot of ways.
9. Although the movie does not reference this, Meyer's book informs us that Jasper has this ability.

Answer: To affect people's emotions

Edward can read minds (with one notable exception!), Alice can see the future, and James can track. Jasper is able to use his ability to affect people's emotions; in the book he is typically portrayed as using this ability to calm a room down.
10. When she was trying to avoid the boys who wanted to ask her to the dance, Bella claims that she is going to Seattle in the book. In the films, Bella says she is going to what city?

Answer: Jacksonville

Jacksonville is the third most populous city on the East Coast, behind only New York City and Philadelphia. With a temperature average of 64 to 91 degrees, and lots of sun, it is also the total opposite of Forks.
