Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Stephanie, this sidekick sometimes enjoys a night out with an old geezer, doesn't look a day over 90 years old, and gathers most of their Burg gossip via visitations at Stiva's mortuary.

Answer: Grandma Mazur

Stephanie's grandma, Edna Mazur, enjoys aiding Stephanie in her hunter pursuits. She commonly refers to people she likes as "a pip", which seems to mean they are great and maybe sassy in nature. Edna is mother to Steph's own mom, and her romantic and dangerous liaisons regularly cause Mrs. Plum a great deal of stress. Grandma has been held for ransom more than once, and always handles it with great dignity. She adores her granddaughter, offers Steph tons of wonderful and useful Burg gossip, and often gets a ride with her to Stiva's for a viewing. On more than one occasion Edna has been known to tip a casket over in order to look at a dead body, or "lose" something inside an open one to get a better peek at the deceased (whom she often knew in life). Grandma Mazur lived briefly with Stephanie in her 1970s themed apartment, and in that time tried to acquire a drivers license!

Piper Halliwell is from the TV series "Charmed", played by actress Holly-Marie Combs.
2. Guest starring in "One For the Money" and again in "High Five", Benito Ramirez was described as evil, soulless, ruthless, and intimidating. His attack on Lula in book one brought her and Stephanie close and they remained so every since. What professional sport was associated with the now oh so dead Ramirez?

Answer: Boxing

Stephanie first encountered Benito when she was investigating her first skip, Joe Morelli. Benito was a soulless boxer, later revealed to be in the owe to Eddie Abruzzi, another soulless woman hater. Benito liked to practice sadistic sexual torture on his women and when he wasn't able to get his hands on Stephanie he took his anger out on Lula.

He was released from prison by the time book three was written, so Stephanie was forced to deal with his threats once more. He was killed just as he was about to come in Stephanie's window. I believe he was shot by someone else who wanted to kill Stephanie at the time.
3. He's a "rockin" drag queen who first attached himself to Miss Plum in "Four to Score". She needed help breaking the codes left behind by her skip, Maxine Nowicki, and he was recommended to her by one of her senior neighbors.

Answer: Salvatore "Sally" Sweet

Sally met Stephanie in book four, and like many before and since, attached himself to her throughout the novel. He helped her solve the codes and find the clues to help her locate Maxine. Maxine skipped her court date, which was set because she stole her boyfriend's car.

The boyfriend offered Steph a big chunk of cash to retrieve some love letters from Maxine, but what he really wanted was a load of counterfeit $20s. Sally was living with a man named Sugar, who stalked and tried to kill Steph a few times. Sugar was in love (see obsessed) with Sally, who despite his drag status, was not a gay man.
4. In a series of "will they, won't they" suspense capers, this mysterious man came in and out of Steph's life through the first eight books. He's a man with many specialties, a seemingly endless supply of expensive cars, was once wanted for a murder he didn't commit, and has a vague residential status known fondly as the "Bat Cave". Who is this burly hunk who killed Eddie Abruzzi at the end of "Hard Eight"?

Answer: Ranger

We found out in book two that Ranger's real name is Ricardo Carlos Manoso. He was in the military and has many sneaky and mercenary type skills. He was wanted in book three for the murder of Homer Ramos, which he was not guilty of, and Steph chose to help in the best ways she could.

Whenever she is in need, she calls either Ranger or Joe. In the later books, Joe's worry about her safety caused him to give her an ultimatum, so she turned to Ranger more and more often. Finally, in "Hard Eight", the duo consummated their long standing mutual lust and afterward agreed that any romance they felt had to end with that night.

He told her to reconnect with Joe, who he knew loved her, as his life didn't afford marriage. He did warn though, that if Joe didn't reappear in her life in a timely manner, he would take advantage of that and be in her bed again.

In the next two books, Ranger and Steph shared more than one passionate kiss, even though she was involved with Joe.
5. Lawyer who's an ex; got caught in the act with Joyce; was attacked by Steph during her search for Maxine; shady personality traits. Who am I describing here?

Answer: Dickie Orr

Stephanie was married to Richard "Dickie" Orr briefly until she caught him in the act with her arch nemesis Joyce Bernhardt. She went across his desk to strangle him during her exhaustive search for Maxine. She had to revisit him in book eight during her search for Evelyn and Annie Soder. It was then she realized she didn't really hate him anymore.

Shawn Spencer is the main character from the TV series "Psych".
6. From book one Stephanie had a pet and later she shared another one with Morelli. Which choice describes these two?

Answer: Rex the hamster and Bob the dog

Rex is Stephanie's beloved hamster, with her since book one. I am not sure Janet realizes the life span of a hamster, as he is alive and ticking all the way through book nine, which seems to be at least two years from the time book one begins. Bob came into her life later.

She was tricked into taking him in book six, and later pawned him off on Joe. After several trips between homes, Bob seemed to have chosen Joe has his owner. Bob loves to eat anything, and Steph likes to allow him to relieve himself on Joyce's lawn! Rex lives inside an aquarium and sleeps in a soup can.
7. Known by past and often current reputation as a stoner, Walter Dumphy went to high school with Stephanie. He'd been known to sell illicit products with his pal Dougie, and they both claimed many of these items "fell off a truck". What is the nickname Walter happily goes by in the series?

Answer: Moon Man

If you remember the choices from question three, the answer was right there! Moon Man and his pal Dougie 'The Dealer' Kruper were kidnapped in book seven by a crazy old widow. While Steph was out trying to bring in Eddie DeChooch, she was also very worried about her missing cohorts. Moon Man tried to give up his stoner ways briefly, but it changed his sunny personality into sort of a worrisome grump. Stephanie saved the men from Sophia, but they'd been treated very badly in the meantime.
8. It is Joe's Grandma Bella that has a reputation for being able to do this to people, causing them misfortune.

Answer: she gives people "the eye"

Grandma Bella has been portrayed as a scary old Italian woman, always causing people to experience some misfortune with her "eye". This "eye" could best be described more as "the sight", as she claims to see visions of the future. She has on occasion seen Stephanie with many of Joe's children, or on the other end of the spectrum, dying horribly.

At the end of book nine, she apologized to Stephanie about an earlier early death prediction. She claimed it was actually a blonde woman and that Steph's death would occur in old age!
9. Stephanie's perfect sister Valerie finally came back to Jersey from California with news of her impending divorce. She was once brunette but now blonde, and Steph always describes her new California looks as _____ _____ in nature.

Answer: Meg Ryan

Valerie couldn't figure out what happened to her seemingly perfect life. She told her family that her hubby had sold their home and ran off with the babysitter. Valerie tried being a bounty hunter and a lesbian before Stephanie introduced her to Albert Kloughn, attorney. Valerie got pregnant with Kloughn's daughter and eventually moved into Steph's apartment.

She and Albert married in book ten.
10. Did Stephanie's long time love, Joe Morelli, propose marriage to her at the end of "Ten Big Ones"?

Answer: No

Stephanie spent a great portion of this book hiding out in Ranger's local apartment. She was hiding out from a gang who'd put a hitman named Junkman after her. Ranger had to go out of town and offered Steph the use of his truck after her vehicle had died by Molotov cocktail.

She'd used the truck, which unintentionally led her to Ranger's secret office building via GPS device. The keys to the vehicle also gave her entry into his apartment. At first she thought she'd stumbled upon his mysterious "Bat Cave", also known as his real home address.

He later confirmed that there was NO GPS that would ever lead her to that location, and she'd have to give up way more in order to see it. Joe did not propose marriage to her at all. He told her that loving her scared him so much he had to end all romantic involvement with her. Upon hearing this news, Ranger did propose to her and she moved into his place. OK, that part never happened, but it is what I'd like to happen.
