Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Huck realize that his father (Pap) has come to town?

Answer: Huck recognizes Pap's footprints in the snow

Pap had two nails in the heel of his shoe, bent into a cross to ward off The Devil. This was a giveaway that Pap had come looking for Huck, undoubtedly to get his hands on Huck's share of the treasure that Huck and Tom found. Huck responds by selling his whole fortune to Judge Thatcher for a dollar in order to keep it away from Pap.
2. Who allies with Judge Thatcher in order to prevent Pap from gaining custody of Huck?

Answer: Widow Douglas

Judge Thatcher and the kindly Widow Douglas try to retain custody of Huck, although the idealistic new judge in town believes that Pap's fatherly rights outweigh their interest. This despite the fact that Pap is a brutal, alcoholic reprobate whose only interest in Huck is to take his money.

The new judge foolishly offers to take Pap into his home in an attempt at reforming him - an attempt that does not succeed.
3. How does Huck make his escape from Pap and the cabin?

Answer: he cuts through the cabin wall, kills a wild pig for its blood, and stages a scene of murder in the cabin

Unhappy about the progress of his suit against Judge Thatcher for Huck's money, Pap kidnaps Huck and takes him to a cabin. Pap mistreats Huck and berates him for his airs in attending school and learning to read. There Huck immediately begins to plan his escape, finding a saw, and a canoe, and waiting for his moment to flee.
4. Why does Judith Loftus suspect Huck's disguise as a girl?

Answer: all of these are reasons she is suspicious

Mrs. Loftus tells Huck a great deal about what has happened since he disappeared. Pap was suspected in his murder; then Jim, who has escaped; then Pap again. Pap has absconded with the money he was given to find Jim. There are prices on both Pap's and Jim's heads: $200 and $300 respectively. Mrs. Loftus tells Huck to contact her if he has more trouble.
5. As Huck and Jim continue their travels, they encounter the wreckage of a riverboat, and Huck overhears two men robbing and threatening a third. What is the name of the riverboat?

Answer: Walter Scott

Huck and Jim make off with the robbers' boat and some of the items which have been looted from the riverboat. They find books, which Huck reads to Jim, clothing, and cigars. They continue their journey, during which Huck tells Jim the story of the missing Dauphin of France, who is believed to be hiding in America.
6. Farther along, Huck encounters a party of men searching the river for escaped slaves. How does Huck get them not to search the raft and find Jim?

Answer: he begs them to help his family, which is suffering from smallpox on the raft

The men have such pity for Huck they give him $40. Huck actually is tempted to turn Jim in, but decides against it when Jim speaks of what a good friend Huck has been to him. Their good fortune runs out when their canoe is stolen and their raft collides with another riverboat and is destroyed.
7. Huck is rescued from his next peril by the family of Buck Grangerford, whose family takes him in. They are sworn enemies of a nearby family. What is their name?

Answer: Shepherdson

The feuding Shepherdsons and Grangerfords, both "genteel" families, cannot remember what started their quarrel, exactly how long it's been going on, or why they are civil to each other in church but engaged in a blood feud outside of it. Ultimately a Shepherdson son elopes with a Grangerford daughter, which leads to a gunfight in which more feuding family members are killed.
8. Huck and Jim next encounter a pair of con artists, a thoroughly disreputable pair. Who are these two passing themselves off as?

Answer: The Duke and The Dauphin

These two criminals swindle the congregation at a revival meeting, steal money from a printing office under false pretenses, and scheme to turn in Jim. Their attempts at performing Shakespeare seem like great acting to Huck; but the buffoonery belies some truly malignant motives. They plan to perform a Shakespeare play in the next town they visit.
9. The criminals' next intended victims are the family of a man who has died leaving half his estate to his brothers from England. What is the name of this family?

Answer: Wilks

The two con men immediately pretend to be the dead man's English brothers in order to acquire their inheritance and swindle the man's nieces out of their share of the estate. Huck manages to hide the ill-gotten gains in the dead man's coffin in order to preserve it for the swindled young women. The con men decamp when the rightful heirs arrive.
10. Huck then learns that the thing he fears most has come to pass: Jim has been sold by the swindlers to a family which intends to turn him back to his owner for the reward. What is the family's name?

Answer: Phelps

With surprise help from Tom Sawyer, Huck contrives to free Jim, who has given information that has led to the capture and punishment of The Duke and The Dauphin. After Tom's convoluted plan fails, it is revealed that Jim had been freed earlier by Miss Watson's will; she passed away several months before. Pap (Huck's father) has died, making it safe for him to return home.
