Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the very last page of every novel is found the famous drawing of the stick man with halo and a short phrase. What was that phrase?

Answer: "Watch for the sign of The Saint, he will be back!"

The Saintly stick figure bearing a halo was designed by author, Leslie Charteris, when he was just nine years old. He was creating a story using the stick figures and later added the halo when he dreamt up The Saint character.
2. For no apparent reason, early Saint novels were given two different titles depending on when and where they were published. The first Saintly novel was published (U.K.) in 1928. What were its titles?

Answer: "The Saint Meets The Tiger" and "Meet The Tiger"

All of these are genuine titles of early Saint novels. A hardback edition of this first novel, in good condition and with original dustjacket, can change hands for around £2,000.
3. Simon Templar was an enigma to a certain Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard in so many of the stories. What was this unfortunate gumshoe's name?

Answer: Claude Eustace Teal

Several arrests that Teal made failed to keep Templar behind bars with any permanency and led to most of this unfortunate officer's ulcers.
4. Simon Templar's adventures took him to many places around the world and the settings sometimes gave birth to the novel's title. Which of these is NOT a Saintly novel title?

Answer: The Saint In Sydney

Although some Saint exploits locate themselves in Australia, there was never an actual novel title based on any Australian city.
5. The Saint enjoyed the company of ladies, in a most gentlemanly fashion of course. His mainstay girlfriend appeared with him in the first novel and in several others over the next two decades, before she seemingly vanished from his life with no credible explanation. What was her name?

Answer: Patricia Holm

Only in 1990 did Charteris give some suggestion as to her fate in a movie outline (never released) called "Son Of The Saint". In this he reveals that his girlfriend fell pregnant by him and how years later the Saint and his son would meet.
6. The Saint had a most unusual co-conspirator in many stories, an American gangster type who could down a bottle of Vat 69 whisky over breakfast yet still shoot the hind leg of a flea from 50 yards. What was the name of this likeable rogue?

Answer: Hoppy Uniatz

Two more incongruous characters you could not wish for. The gay (yes you could use that descriptive then!), swashbuckling, debonaire, gentleman Saint and the thuggish, alcholic ox-like character called Hoppy. But it worked and it worked well with one coming to the rescue of the other at the eleventh hour in a good many merry tales.
7. Charteris collaborated on saintly titles with other aspiring authors quite deliberately towards the end of his writing career, with the intention that "The Saint" tales would continue after his death. Which of these authors did NOT collaborate with Charteris on Saintly novels?

Answer: Burl Barer

They all collaborated on later novels (14 between 1964 and 1983) with the exception of Burl Barer, who has written two novels as a solo entity and is a renowned Saint historian and researcher.
8. In 1936 Charteris founded "The Saint Club" which is still going strong today. Proceeds from membership fees and merchandising orginally supported a children's ward at Plaistow hospital, England until its nationalisation in 1948. Since then the "Saint Club" supports a charitable organisation which is referred to at the back of every novel published since. What charitable organisation does the "Saint Club" support?

Answer: The Arbour Youth Centre

The Arbour Youth Centre in a deprived area of East London provides less privileged children an opportunity to enjoy sporting and adventure activities such as barging, sailing and boxing. Charlie Magri, W.B.C. Flyweight Champion 1983, was a product of this club.
9. What car did Simon Templar usually drive in the novels?

Answer: Hirondel

Although the Saint drove both a Volvo P1800S and a Jaguar XJS on tv (Bond drove the Aston Martin!) it was the ficticious Hirondel that Charteris created in the novels.
10. What alias did Simon Templar quite regularly adopt in the novels?

Answer: Sebastian Tombs

Sebastian Tombs was his most commonly used alias, amongst others. Each alias he used incorporated the "ST" saintly initials.
