Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Corrie's occupation?

Answer: watchmaker

Like her father and grandfather before her, Corrie worked as a watchmaker in the ten Boom shop. She was extremely gifted at her work, and was the first licensed female watchmaker in Holland.
2. Which one of these was not one of Corrie's siblings?

Answer: Jan

Corrie was the youngest of four children. Betsie was the oldest sister, Willem was the second child and the only boy, and Nollie was two years older than Corrie.
3. Who refused to lie as a result of devotion and obedience to God?

Answer: Nollie

Nollie never told a lie, and as a result of her complete honesty, she was imprisoned and the lives of the Jews she was harboring were endangered. Corrie became angry at her sister as a result of this incident, because if Nollie had simply lied, she and Annaliese, the Jew whom she was harboring, would have been safe.

As it turns out, Annaliese is able to escape, but Nollie spends several weeks in prison.
4. What is the only last name in the Dutch Underground?

Answer: Smit

There is only one last name in the Dutch Underground for secrecy purposes. The less that the people involved in the Underground know about each other, the less that they can reveal to the Nazis if they are captured. Corrie finds this to be true in prison: she is honestly unable to answer many of the questions asked of her.
5. What is the name of the ten Boom's residence?

Answer: The Beje

The Beje has an important role in the story. Because of its ancient design, tiny rooms, and uneven structure, it is particularly useful to harbor Jews and others despised by the Nazis. The hiding place refers to both the tiny room built in the Beje where the stowaways can hide, and Scheveningen and Vught are both prisons.
6. On the day of the ten Boom's arrest, why is Corrie unable to bring her prison bag with her?

Answer: She is fearful that picking it up will cause the police to notice the entrance of the hiding place.

Corrie carelessly left her prison bag.
7. Corrie's father passed away shortly after arriving in prison. What other member of the family also died while imprisoned?

Answer: Betsie

Corrie's older sister Betsie was anemic, and had always been weak. Her failing health caused her difficulty throughout the book, but at the deadly Concentration Camp, Ravensbruck, she became dangerously weak and feverish, and succumbed to illness. Betsie's death was one of the saddest parts of the book, because of her strong faith and kindness. Shortly before her death, Betsie predicted that she and Corrie would both be released by the New Year.
8. Corrie tells a conscious lie for the first time when she is 45 years old. What did she lie about?

Answer: Her possession of a radio

Radios were forbidden as a result of the German invasion of Holland, and citizens were ordered to turn in their radios. Corrie's nephew Peter (Nollie's son) persuades her to turn in only their portable radio and keep the other one so that the family can continue to stay informed.

When Corrie is asked if she owns another radio, she answers that she does not. She confesses that the incident haunts her not because she lied, but because of how easy it was to lie.
9. Which of the following was not a vision of Betsie's?

Answer: The ten Booms and many of their acquaintances being taken away on a wagon

While in Ravensbruck, Betsie told Corrie of her multiple visions. She envisioned a concentration camp transformed into a refuge for Germans to learn to love again after the war. She also predicted that she and Corrie would have a beautiful mansion to help former prisoners and victims of the war.

She also often spoke of their mission after their release, which was to tell the world what they had learned in the Concentration Camp about God and His love. There was a vision in the book that involved the ten Booms and others that they knew being transported against their will on the wagon, but Corrie envisioned that, and not Betsie. All of these visions came true.
10. What sets Betsie apart from the other prisoners?

Answer: Her ability to be thankful in all circumstances

Betsie is unique in her ability to be thankful in all circumstances. At one point, Corrie is scornful of this, because she feels that there is nothing to be thankful for. She laughs when Betsie thanks God for the fleas. As it turns out, the inmates are able to break the rules and have freedom in the barracks. The guards refuse to enter the barracks because it is full of fleas.
