Set in the fictional town of Clanton, Mississippi, the book tells the tale of a young newspaper owner and the events surrounding a vicious murder of a young widow in front of her children.

Answer: A jail cell

When informed, by the "Times" newspaper, that Padgitt was sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned cell with access to the phone day or night while the rest of the jail population lived in squalor the citizens of Clanton, Mississippi were very angry.

Answer: Big Brown River

The Big Brown River is a fictional river in the state of Mississippi. It surrounds Padgitt island on three sides, isolating and protecting the Padgitt family. It is probably based on the Big Black River which travels 330 miles from Eupora, in Webster County, to connect with the Mississippi River south of Vicksburg.
The other rivers named are real rivers in the state of Mississippi.

Coley was the son of a former Sheriff of Clanton and knew how powerful the Padgitts were. When he put his name forward as a candidate for Sheriff he received $50,000 from Buford Padgitt. He won by a landslide.

Answer: They had Italian names

When Miss Callie (Calia) Ruffin was born her mother's employer, who desperately wanted a child, practically took her away from her mother. This woman, née Nicola Rossetti, was an immigrant from Italy in the early 1900s who married a Clanton landowner called Zachary DeJarnette. She taught Callie Italian and they were both taught diction and English. She became Callie's closest friend.

Under the courthouse cupola was a room where the lawyers went to imbibe. Amongst the gathering of drunks was Baggy Suggs, erstwhile reporter for the "Times". During the shooting Baggy climbed out of the window clutching an electrical cord that was being held by Wobble Tackett and Chick Eliot. Unfortunately one of the people inside the room had a wooden leg which collapsed under him. resulting in Baggy plummeting forty feet into some boxwoods.

The boxwoods cushioned his fall and then proceeded to bounce him onto the sidewalk, stunning him. All the while Wiley took pictures of Baggy whilst laughing his head off.

According to the Ruffin family preacher, Reverend Thurston, by running a grand and delightful profile of an outstanding black family on the newspaper's front page Willie had helped the town take a giant step towards racial tolerance.

The Judge took the unusual step in protecting the jury pool list so that no members of that list could be intimidated by the Padgitt crime family.

Answer: He had an affair with a white woman

Sam, when he was sixteen, had an affair with a woman who was married to a member of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Sam was working in a shoe store at the time and was seduced by the older white woman, Iris Durant. Unfortunately for Sam, this was at the time of the upheavals of the late sixties and early seventies and Iris was also being followed by a private detective.

A relationship between a married woman and a single man at that time was scandalous. A relationship between a married woman and a teenage black boy could result in a lynching.

Answer: Hank Hooten

Hank suffered from schizophrenia and believed himself to be in love, and having a relationship, with Rhoda Kassellaw. After the trial, and conviction, of Padgitt Hank was upset that he had not received the death penalty. He was wounded by a deputy and was arrested and sectioned.

Willie tried hard to stop the arrival of Bargain City to Clanton. He showed how a big supermarket can cause harmful effects on the surrounding business community. When the auto shop was closed Willie lambasted the town councillors for their shortsightedness in a series of articles.

Answer: Her sister

Thinking the box contained some pecan nuts, sent by her sister, Maxine phoned her sister to thank her for her present. Her sister denied the box came from her so Maxine get the deputy who had been guarding her to have a look at it. What followed was one of the stupidest acts I've ever read.
