Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Anne Beddingfeld's father die?

Answer: Pneumonia

Professor Beddingfeld was a great authority on primitive man but is not rich. Anne is left an orphan and longs for adventure.
2. What was the name of Professor Beddingfeld's solicitor?

Answer: Mr Flemming

Mr Symington appears in "The Moving Finger". Anne goes to stay with Mr Flemming and his wife, who is not as pleased with the arrangement. Anne does not have much money but has the freedom she longs for.
3. At which tube station did Anne see "The Man in the Brown Suit" fall to his death?

Answer: Hyde Park Corner

The others mentioned are stations on an English Monopoly board. Anne witnesses a man falling to his death on the railway line. She is suspicious of the doctor who examines the man for the simple reason that he was checking for the man's heart on the wrong side of the body. Anne tries to give the doctor a piece of scrap paper, but it smells of mothballs. It belongs to the dead man.
4. Which port does the Kilmorden Castle leave from?

Answer: Southampton

The man is named as L. B. Carton, from South Africa, and had gone to view Sir Eustace's house, the same house where a Madame Nadina was found dead. Anne goes to Scotland Yard with the evidence and her observations but is dismissed. The Kilmorden Castle is a ship. Anne decides to travel, first class, to South Africa, even though this will leave her virtually penniless.
5. Which injury has the man suffered, who bursts into Anne's cabin?

Answer: Stabbed

Anne is enjoying her voyage after some seasickness. A man comes into Anne's cabin at 1:00 a.m. on the 22nd of January, asking her to hide him. Anne does so, and dismisses a curious night stewardess. The man does not appreciate Anne's help or tell her what is wrong. Anne does not trust the Reverend Chichester, another passenger, and also is suspicious of Guy Pagett and Colonel Race.
6. At the Fancy Dress Ball, on the ship, what does Sir Eustace come as?

Answer: A teddy bear

Anne comes as a gypsy. Colonel Race is in the Secret Service. Colonel Race tells the story of a bold diamond robbery many years ago. Sir Lawrence Eardley's son, John, and his friend John Lucas brought back diamonds, which turned out to be stolen. Both John Eardsley and Lucas died in World War One. Colonel Race is the next of kin to Sir Lawrence Eardsley who has recently died. Anne recognises Harry Rayburn as the man who came into her cabin. Harry Rayburn is one of Sir Eustace Pedler's secretaries.
7. What was in the secret document what Sir Eustace was carrying?

Answer: A blank piece of paper

Anne and Mrs Blair examine the piece of paper, which belonged to the man who died. Mrs Blair remembers a mysterious incident that happened the same night as when Rayburn came to Anne's cabin. She had lost a roll of film, and somebody had pushed a roll of film (in a tin) into her room at 1:00 a.m.

When they open the tin there are diamonds inside. The man who asked Pedler to take the document, and who suggested hiring Rayburn, knows nothing of Rayburn at all. Rayburn has now disappeared.
8. What was Sir Eustace's house called?

Answer: Mill House

This is the place where Madame Nadina was found dead. The other houses are mentioned in other Christie novels. Anne and the party are nearly in South Africa. Sir Eustace has hired a new secretary, a Miss Pettigrew.
9. In the collection of wooden animals, which Anne and Mrs Blair had collected, which is the largest?

Answer: Giraffe

Colonel Race asks Anne to marry him but she is in love with Harry Rayburn. Anne receives a telegram from Rayburn, asking her to meet him near the Falls. But someone else is waiting there and nearly kills her. Rayburn rescues her and takes her to a secret island to recover, before returning to her friends.
10. And finally - is John Eardsley still alive?

Answer: Yes

Sir Eustace is revealed to be the mysterious "Colonel", while Miss Pettigrew and Chichester was one and the same, a clever actor. Harry Rayburn is really John Eardsley, who will inherit a lot of money. But, instead, he and Anne run away together to his secret island. Anne marries him, and they have a son. Sir Eustace has escaped justice and is now far away. Look out for more Christie quizzes soon!
