"Nightrise" by Anthony Horowitz Part 2 Quiz

As part of Jamie and Alicia's plan to discover what has happened to Scott, the two of them decide that Jamie should try to use his mind controlling powers on Colton Banes. Pretending that he is doing a week's work experience for a dispatch company, Jamie manages to get into the Nightrise Corporation offices by saying that he has a package for Colton Banes. A guard tells him that Colton Banes works on the 45th floor.

However, when Jamie gets up to the 45th floor, a young man working on the 45th floor corrects him, and says that Banes works up on the 49th floor, in Room 4925, after commenting that Banes really must be a big shot.

Answer: True

After Jamie managed to escape from the Nightrise Corporation offices in Los Angeles, he and Alicia were driving back to her sister's house when she got a call from Colton Banes. He made her an offer: if she would give up Jamie, they would give Daniel back to her. If not, he threatened that she would never see her boy again. Thankfully, Alicia refused the offer.

This confirmed her suspicions, that Nightrise was the company responsible for the disappearance of Daniel McGuire.

Answer: Patrick

Patrick, an Irishman, was waiting for Alicia and Jamie when they arrived in the lift from the lobby. He liked gambling on the horse races, but said that he was still losing. Patrick was Trelawney's campaign chairman for the state of California.

Answer: Jeremy Rabb

Jamie knew that he would need to find his brother soon. So with the help of Senator Trelawney, they had arranged a setup in which Jamie was arrested for supposedly selling drugs at a school. They had slotted him into the Nevada juvenile justice system, which meant that he would be sent to Silent Creek, where he would be able to look for Scott. Jamie's case number was J83157.

Answer: Blue

The four boys that we meet were sitting with Jamie at lunch. Their names were Green Eyes, Baltimore, DV and Tunes. They had nicknamed Jamie "Indian."

Green Eyes was 15, had blue eyes, and was arrested for being in possession of a gun.

Answer: June 24th

At the beginning of "Night Rise," there is a page titled "The Story So Far," in which it says:

"'Nightrise,' the third book in the series, begins in June, a few weeks before the end of 'Evil Star.' The Old Ones know the power of the Five- and their servants are already searching for them, determined to keep them apart."

Jamie decides to try and use his mind control powers on Max Koring, demanding that he be taken to his brother. However, Jamie's powers don't work, and he gets thrown into CRR. While in CRR, he has a dream very similar to one that he had earlier in the book, in which a man on a desolate beach says to Jamie "He's gonna kill him." In the dream, there was a lightning strike. It was midnight on the 24th of June- known as Inti Raymi, and the second gate, located in Nazca, Peru, had just opened.

The next few pages briefly recap Matt and Pedro's story in Peru from the second book, "Evil Star."

Answer: Joe Feather

Colton Banes had told Max Koring to turn off the air conditioning in Jamie's cell. It was over than a hundred degrees Fahrenheit, and Jamie was suffering badly from it. Joe Feather, also of Native American descent, switched the air conditioning back on in Jamie's cell, and told him that he was going to get him out of Silent Creek. Joe also tells Jamie that he is one of the Five, and that Scott had also been transported out of Silent Creek by Nightrise. Jamie only agrees to let Joe help him if they can also take Daniel McGuire with them.

Answer: Colton Banes

As Jamie, Joe and Daniel were escaping from Silent Creek, Colton Banes took aim at Jamie and fired. The bullet hit Jamie just next to his shoulder. Colton Banes was killed by an Indian shortly after shooting Jamie.

While Jamie was not exactly dead, it caused him to travel back thousands of years, to a time and place long before the Dark Ages, where he met Scar, and they engaged in the first battle against the Old Ones.

Meanwhile, back in his world, Joe and the shaman (medicine man) were working desperately, trying to get Jamie to wake up.

Answer: Sapling

Jamie woke up in a strange "dream world," which was actually thousands of years prior to his time, only to meet a seemingly friendly "monk," who attacked Jamie as soon as he learned that Jamie wasn't a servant of the Old Ones. While Jamie did a good job defending himself at first, it was only due to a girl (named Scar) and two men who saved him, by firing arrows and killing the scorpion-man.

After a minute or two, Jamie recognised her as the girl from his dream, in which he, Scott, she, and two other boys were in a boat.

Answer: Finn

There were three men travelling with Scar when rescued Jamie; Finn, Erin and Corian. Finn was described as "about thirty, a great bear of a man with a beard, a scar high up on his cheekbone and a broken nose."

Scar (her full name being Scarlett) introduced the men as Finn, and Erin Silverhand, and his brother Corian. Erin and Corian were both younger than Finn, and both had fair hair, and it was fairly obvious that they were brothers. Erin was nicknamed "Erin Silverhand," due to the fact that his hand was missing, and had been replaced by a steel replica.

Answer: 10 leagues

Jamie agreed to accompany Scar, Finn, Erin and Corian back to the City of Canals- he didn't really have much of a choice. Even though he had never ridden a horse before, as soon as he mounted the horse provided for him, it seemed to all come back naturally to him, as though it had been programmed into his memory (much like the sword he had used to defend himself from the scorpion-man earlier on).

And so, they rode their ten leagues to the City of Canals.

Answer: Finn

As they were still traveling back to the City of Canals, Jamie saw a fairly uninviting looking river, but realised just how thirsty he was. Scar was fairly patronising when he asked to stop for a drink, saying that the water was poisoned. It was Finn who took pity on him, and offered him a drink from his own flask made out of animal skin.

Just after this, they also narrowly evaded a group of warriors made up purely of flies. The way that Finn, Scar and the others acted made it clear that these "fly soldiers" were dangerous enemies.

Answer: Matt

As they were sitting around the fire in the City of Canals, Scar attempted to explain to Jamie what being one of the Five meant.

Of the Five, Matt was the first, which made him the leader (think back to "Raven's Gate" and "Evil Start"- Matt Freeman was the lead character in those books). What Scar says is that the Old Ones have existed through all time, and that only the Five, when brought together, can stop them. She explained to him that there would be a battle; if the Five could all reach one another, they would win. If not, the world would come to an end, destroyed by the Old Ones.

The Five existed in both "worlds," and if one in Scar's world died, he would be replaced by the same one from Jamie's world. Scar explained time as being not a line, but a circle. Sapling had been killed in an attempt to rescue Inti (Pedro), so Jamie had "replaced" Sapling for the first battle against the Old Ones.

Answer: Scathack Hill

Scar was still telling her story to Jamie at this point. She told Jamie that Matt had called a meeting two nights previously, and said that Sapling (Jamie's "alter ego") needed to go to a place called Scathack Hill, where he would find something that would help them in the battle against the Old Ones.

Unfortunately, Sapling had been killed. And Jamie had been sent to replace him, so that the Five would still be able to unite in battle against the Old Ones.

Answer: Frost

On the morning of battle, Finn took Jamie to a room where Scar was cradling a bundle. As a test, Finn handed Jamie the sword and asked him what was written on it, to which Jamie replied "Frost." However, this was not written in any language that Jamie knew- the letters were foreign.

This seemed to prove that he really was meant to take Sapling's place in the battle against the Old Ones.

Answer: Chaos

As all the forces were lining up for battle, Jamie got his first glimpse of the Old Ones. Scar explained that even though the King of the Old Ones had no name, they had called him Chaos. A description of Chaos is as follows:

"He [Chaos] was human-sized, but he seemed bigger. He seemed to swallow up everything around him like a black hole in outer space. Jamie knew that he was looking at pure evil and that there was nothing more empty or more destructive in the universe."

Answer: The giant monkey

Not too long after the battle against the Old Ones began, the monkey was blinded in one of its eyes, screaming in pain. Shortly after that, the monkey fell, after being hit by a great ball of orange flame, flung from a very elaborate catapult.

Answer: A fish

After Jamie has stumbled through most of the fighting, he comes to a circular arena, where the battle between the Five and the Old Ones would end. It is there that Jamie first sees Matt, the leader of the Five, close up. He was holding a sword in one hand, and a shield in the other. The symbol that he had chosen for his shield was a fish.

Answer: The five points of their five swords touched

All of the Five had stepped into the circular arena with Chaos. The only way that he could be gotten rid of was when all five of the swords touched each other, when they all stepped forward to stab Chaos.

"Jamie was the last to step forward. Gritting his teeth, he plunged his sword into the blackness in front of him. He felt his arm freeze, and wondered if the blade had shattered. At the same moment, he was deafened by the terrible scream of the defeated king.
The five points of the five swords had touched."

Answer: The sun

After the Old Ones have been defeated and carried away through a vortex that opens in the sky, the clouds part, and the sun comes out.

"Scar stepped forward. She was staring at something high above her, shielding her eyes. Jamie looked up and saw that at last the clouds had parted and the sun had been allowed to show its face."
'So that's what it looks like," Scar muttered. 'I always wondered.'"

The Old Ones had been defeated, at least for now.
