Susan Eloise Hinton came up with the idea when she was 16 years old. She used her initials because she was afraid that people wouldn't believe that a book so good could be written by a woman (I know, totally sexist, right?). The book is about two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs.

It is a great book and has been made into a movie starring C. Thomas Howell. Hinton also authored a few other great books, but none of them reached the success that "The Outsiders" had.
