Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the main characters in the series, also known as the "twins of legend"?

Answer: Josh and Sophie Newman

Fifteen year old twins Josh and Sophie Newman learn at the beginning of "The Alchemyst" that they are the legendary "gold and silver". To their surprise, they find they possess extraordinary magical powers and that their destiny is to save (or destroy) the world.
2. In what city does "The Alchemyst" begin?

Answer: San Francisco, California USA

The twins live in San Francisco but travel to both Paris and London during their attempt to avoid capture by the servants of the Dark Elders. Danu Talis (known in the modern world as Atlantis) was home to the Elders until it was destroyed during an ancient battle. The Dark Elders wish to restore Danu Talis and rule the world.
3. Josh Newman has a summer job working for a man named Nick Fleming. What is Nick Fleming's profession?

Answer: Bookseller

Josh and Sophie are shocked to learn that the unpretentious Nick Fleming is none other than the 14th century French alchemist, Nicholas Flamel. His wife, Perenelle, is a patron of the coffee shop where Sophie works. The Flamels have spent the last 500 years searching for the twins of legend, in hope of saving the world from the Dark Elders and their plans to destroy the human race (humani).
4. Early in "The Alchemyst", we meet a mysterious red-haired woman named Scathach who befriends the Newman twins and helps them to further understand their destiny. Which of the following about "Scatty" is NOT true?

Answer: She is half human and half Elder

Scathach the Shadow (sometimes called "Scatty" by friends) is feared by her enemies for her fierceness and invincibility in battle. Sophie correctly guesses that her new friend is a vampire when Scatty is unable to enter a room without an invitation. (Scatty assures Josh and Sophie that she is not part of the blood drinking clan.

In fact, she finds this practice repulsive and is actually a vegetarian.) In "The Alchemyst", Scatty mentions that she is part of the group known as "Next Generation".

The Next Generation are children of the first Elders (gods and goddesses who lived on Danu Talis until its fall).
5. The series is filled with immortal humans, many of whom are real historical figures. In "The Magician", the twins meet a woman in Paris named Joan and learn that the legendary Maid of Orleans was not burned at the stake as the history books state. How did Scatty's best friend, Joan of Arc, gain immortality?

Answer: She was given a transfusion with Scatty's blood

Adding to her reputation as a formidable warrior, the Shadow rescued Joan just as her execution was set to begin. When Joan was injured during the escape, the Flamels performed the first ever transfusion and Joan received immortality through Scatty's Next Generation blood.
Most immortal humans (or "humani" as they're called by other races) receive the gift from an Elder (such as the Cat Goddess, Bastet) in exchange for eternal loyalty and service. The Flamels, however, possess an ancient book which contains the recipe for a potion of life and do not serve a Master.
6. Just before leaving San Francisco at the end of "The Alchemyst", Sophie learns the Magic of Air. Which character teaches Sophie this elemental magic?

Answer: Scathach's grandmother

Zephaniah, the Witch of Endor, is Scathach's grandmother and the wife of Mars Ultor. She not only teaches Sophie Air Magic, she also transfers all of her memories into Sophie's mind.
Perenelle Flamel was kidnapped before Sophie's powers were Awakened and Sara Newman does not appear in person until much later in the series. Elderly Aunt Agnes is the temporary guardian of Josh and Sophie. Her true identity is not revealed until the fifth book.
7. Nicholas and Perenelle possess an ancient and powerful book called the Book of Abraham the Mage (aka the Codex). Who is the immortal that attacks the bookstore at the beginning of "The Alchemyst" and will stop at nothing to steal this priceless treasure?

Answer: Dr. John Dee

Dr. John Dee has been pursuing the Flamels for centuries in his quest to steal the Codex, which contains the recipe for an immortality potion. A powerful magician in his own right, Dee has aligned himself with Dark Elders, kidnapped and even committed murder in pursuit of his goal.

He is an eloquent and persuasive speaker who knows how to find and use the weaknesses of others for his own objectives. The Comte de Saint Germain (Francis to his friends) is Joan of Arc's husband and an old friend of the Flamels. Billy the Kid and William Shakespeare are also immortals who appear at various times throughout the series.
8. What is the name of the magical portals used for instant transportation?

Answer: Leygates

Leygates are portals that are formed where lines of magical energy (leylines) intersect. They permit instant travel, regardless of distance. Notable leygates are located at Stonehenge, in Paris and at the San Francisco shop belonging to the Witch of Endor, but there are many more scattered throughout our world and the other Shadowrealms. (Scatty hates leygates; they make her nauseous.)
Floo Powder, Portkeys and the Knight Bus are all magical forms of transportation used in the Harry Potter books.
9. John Dee kidnaps Perenelle and imprisons her on Alcatraz Island. The island is full of monsters and the sorceress must use her wits and magic to stay alive and plan her eventual escape. In "The Magician", Perenelle finds an ally in a helpful ghost. What is the name of this guardian of Alcatraz?

Answer: Juan Manuel de Ayala

When Perenelle meets Juan, he reveals that he was a Spanish sailor in the 1700's and the first human to set foot on Alcatraz Island. He returned to the island after his death and has remained there to guard and protect the place he loved. Juan helps Perenelle by warning her about the location of some of the island's most terrifying residents and by helping her contact her husband.
Areop-Enap (Old Spider) is an Elder who is also imprisoned on the island and Jefferson Miller, another ghost, is a "resident" at John Dee's offices in San Francisco.
Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington is the Gryffindor ghost at Hogwarts.
10. In "The Magician", John Dee and fellow immortal Niccolo Machiavelli convince Josh to join them and the three travel deep into the catacombs beneath the city of Paris. There, they meet a legendary Elder who has been trapped in stone for centuries. What is the name of this Elder who, at the urging of Dee and Machiavelli, finally awakens Josh's magical abilities?

Answer: Mars Ultor

The legendary god of war Awakens Josh's powers and gives him the gift of his extensive military knowledge. Josh learns that Mars' wife, the Witch of Endor, cursed him to live out eternity trapped in stone as punishment for becoming corrupt and turning against the humani.
When Sophie uses her aura to find Josh, he is rescued from the Catacombs and the twins flee to London with Nicholas.
Odin, Prometheus and the Sphinx are also Elders who play various roles in the series.
