Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Sir Oswald Coote's private secretary?

Answer: Rupert Bateman

In this book, we return to Chimneys, which was last seen in 'The Secret of Chimneys'. Sir Oswald Coote and his wife, Maria, are renting it. They are holding a house party for young people. The other options mentioned are staying at Chimneys too. One guest, Gerald - or Gerry - Wade is a notorious late riser. The other guests purchase eight alarm clocks, to get him up early.
2. What game was played that evening?

Answer: Bridge

Rupert Bateman puts the eight clocks into Gerry's room after Gerry is asleep. They are set to go off at intervals, after 6.30 am.
3. How did Gerry Wade die?

Answer: Overdose of chloral

Gerry is discovered dead, the next morning. Jimmy Thesiger and Ronny Devereux inform Gerry's half sister, Loraine Wade. Later Gerry's friends go to see Gerry's body, in his bedroom. Instead of eight alarm clocks, there is now only seven.
4. How did Ronny Devereux die?

Answer: Shot

The Caterham's - Lord Clement Edward Alistair Brent and his daughter, Lady Eileen (more commonly known as Bundle) - return to Chimneys. Bundle finds a letter, in her room, which Gerry wrote to his half sister, on the evening of his death. It mentions Seven Dials. Bundle thinks this is a slummy part of London.

While Bundle is travelling to town, a man appears right in front of the car, and then collapses. He manages to say five words to Bundle: 'Seven Dials...tell Jimmy Thesiger'. Bundle takes the man to a local doctor but there is nothing to be done.

The doctor says the man was shot; he was not run over.
5. What did Jimmy think Seven Dials was connected with?

Answer: Secret society

The dead man turns out to be Ronny Devereaux, a friend of Bill's. He was also a friend of Gerry Wade. Bundle learns that Loraine was not really Gerry's sister. Gerry's father ran away with his second wife, and Loraine took the Wade name. Bundle plans to contact Bill, to find out more about Gerry, and also Jimmy Thesiger, to pass on Ronny's message. Bundle goes to see Jimmy at his home. Loraine Wade is also waiting to see Jimmy.

She does not think Gerry would have taken anything to make him sleep. Jimmy thinks Ronny found out too much about Gerry's death. Loraine accidently opened a letter of Gerry's, from Seven Dials.

However, it just contained names and dates.
6. At the Seven Dials Club, where does Bundle conceal herself?

Answer: In a cupboard

Bundle goes to the Seven Dials Club, in London. She finds out more about the club from Alfred, the doorman. He shows her a room, which is rarely used, but was dusted that morning. Bundle hides in a cupboard, and makes herself a peephole. She hopes to learn some things to her advantage.
7. What nationality is the owner of the Seven Dials Club?

Answer: Russian

Bundle hears a very interesting meeting between five people - four men and a woman who they call Anna. Each person wears a mask in the face of a clock. They all have different times on them.
8. Where is the political house party of George Lomax's held?

Answer: Wyvern Abbey

Lots of political people - including Sir Oswald Coote and his wife, Sir Stanley Digby (the British Air Minister) and a German inventor, Herr Eberhard, are attending. Herr Eberhard has invented a formula, which will revolutionise flying.
9. What does Sir Oswald Coote deal with?

Answer: Steel

Bundle is also attending the political party, and so is Jimmy. The secret formula is stolen, and the Air Minister's secretary is drugged. But the formula is soon returned.
10. And finally, whom does Bundle say she is marrying, at the end of the novel?

Answer: Bill Eversleigh

It is discovered that Jimmy Thesiger drugged Gerry Wade's drink, and shot Ronny Devereux. Loraine Wade was his accomplice. The Seven Dials Club were really a group of amateur detectives, assisting Superintendent Battle. Look out for more Christie quizzes soon!
