Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whereabouts is Herzoslovakia?

Answer: One of the Balkan states

Anthony Cade meets up with his old friend Jimmy McGrath, in Africa. Jimmy tells him how he saved the life of Count Stylptitch. He was the Prime Minister of Herzoslovakia; he was also a well-known villain. The Count has recently died, but before his death, he sent his memoirs to Jimmy. If Jimmy takes them, in person, to the London publishers, he will get £1000.

Unfortunately, Jimmy wants to go gold mining, so Anthony says he will go in Jimmy's place. Jimmy will give Anthony £250 out of the £1000.
2. When Jimmy saved a life of a Herzoslovakian, in Uganda, what was in the oilskin package?

Answer: Blackmailing letters

They were love-letters, written by an Englishwoman. The Herzoslovakia had been blackmailing her. Jimmy considered destroying them but then decided not to. He wants Anthony to find this Virginia Revel and give them back to her. There is also a mention of Chimneys. Anthony says it is a stately home in England. Anthony will travel to England under Jimmy's name.
3. Which of these names do not belong to Lord Caterham?

Answer: Michael

Lord Caterham, the Ninth Marquis of Caterham, is the owner of Chimneys. Chimneys is a meeting place for shooting parties, and where politicians and diplomats meet. George Lomax is organising a deal about oil shares, to take place at Chimneys. Prince Michael Obolovitch will be attending, so will Herman Isaacstein, a representative of the all-British syndicate. Also Bill Eversleigh, George's secretary, will attend with Virginia Revel. Virginia is George's cousin and has connections with Herzoslovakia.
4. What party does "Baron Lollipop" represent?

Answer: Loyalist party

The Baron's real name is Baron Lolopretjzyl. He tells Anthony that Prince Michael Obolovitch will soon become King of Herzoslovakia. If Count Stylptitch's memoirs were to be published, they would cause trouble. Anthony explains that his job is to deliver the memoirs; it is his honour. Later, an Italian waiter steals the blackmailing letters from his room.
5. How was Giuseppe Manelli killed?

Answer: Shot

The blackmailer comes to Virginia's home, and shows her the blackmailing letters. Virginia knows she did not write them. She quite enjoys the experience of being blackmailed so gives the man £40, and tells him to return the next evening for more money. Virginia is going to Chimneys for the weekend.

She returns home, to prepare to leave for Chimneys. Virginia is surprised, when she enters the study, to find her blackmailer, apparently asleep. As she gets closer, she sees he is dead, shot through the heart, and the pistol still nearby.

As Virginia wonders what to do next, one of the many unemployed men who often hang around rings the doorbell. Virginia thinks she can trust him, and tells him the whole story. The man is very understanding and he introduces himself as Anthony Cade.
6. From which station does Virginia leave for Chimneys?

Answer: Paddington Station

The other stations appear on the British monopoly board. Anthony tells Virginia that her blackmailer was Giuseppe, an Italian waiter. He tells Virginia that she must go to Chimneys as arranged; he will dispose of the body. Anthony puts the dead body in a trunk that Virginia is to leave at the lost luggage department, he will collect it later. Anthony collects the trunk.

He dumps the dead body near London, and hides the pistol. He then comes to Chimneys and scales the walls, and enters the grounds. All is in darkness and securely locked. Anthony hears a shot inside the house, and a light, in a first floor window.

Then all is in darkness again.
7. Which police station is Inspector Badgworthy based at?

Answer: Market Basing

Lord Caterham telephones the police, to say that one of his houseguests, a foreigner, has been found, shot dead. Inspector Badgworthy goes to Chimneys with Constable Johnson and the local Doctor. Lord Caterham gives the dead man's name as Count Stanislaus, but Caterham seems to be hiding something. George Lomax comes to Chimneys - he says they must use the utmost discretion.

He calls in Superintendent Battle, of Scotland Yard; he will hush everything up. The dead man was found in the Council Chamber. Count Stanislaus was really Prince Michael of Herzoslovakia. Just then, Tredwell, the butler at Chimneys, knocks on the library door.

There is a gentleman who wants to see Lord Caterham - he gives his name as Anthony Cade.
8. What is Hiram P. Fish interested in?

Answer: Books

Anthony does not mention the disposal of Giuseppe's body, but admits to being in the grounds of Chimneys, and hearing the shot. Battle does not seem to believe everything Anthony says. Battle shows him the dead body. Anthony is astonished; he'd met Prince Michael before.

But he called himself Mr Holmes, who collected the manuscript of the memoirs. Virginia meets up with Anthony at Chimneys. She says he is an old friend, he is glad he could make it after all. Lord Caterham invites Anthony to stay at Chimneys.
9. Who occupies the second room from the left - the room where the light was seen?

Answer: Mademoiselle Brun

She is the French governess to Lord Caterham's two younger children. Anthony discovers a stranger in the grounds of Chimneys. He seems to be a French commercial traveller, looking for The Jolly Cricketers. Anthony politely tells him he is trespassing and points him in the right direction. Baron Lollipop and Captain Andrassy, Prince Michael's equerry, come to stay at Chimneys.

The Baron believes the manuscripts that they decoyed from Anthony are now burnt. Anthony is not so sure. He has five days to retrieve them and hand them to the London publishers.
10. Which of the houseguests manages to sleep through the attempted burglary?

Answer: Mr Isaacstein

Virginia wakes up Bill in the middle of the night - something queer is going on in the Council Chamber. Someone - or more than one person - is dismantling the suits of armour in there, and tapping the wooden panelling. Bill goes to investigate with Virginia.

He bursts into the room, but the lights do not come on when Virginia flicks them. There is a desperate struggle and the burglar - or burglars - escape. Virginia screams and brings the rest of the household to the chamber. Nothing seems to be missing. Mr Fish has the intelligence to dress fully before coming to help. Mr Isaacstein sleeps through the commotion
11. Where does Anthony find the bundle of love-letters again?

Answer: On his dressing table

Anthony is intrigued by the attempted burglary. He, Bill and Virginia wait in the Council Chamber, hoping for more developments, that evening. Sure enough, someone comes in through the window. As Virginia turns on the light, Battle is in the doorway - he only pretended to go to London.

The stranger is revealed to be the stranger who has been hanging around Chimneys. It is revealed that he is Monsieur Lemoine, of the French Suréte. Superintendent Battle has been expecting him. Anthony comes clean to Superintendent Battle and tells him how he disposed of Giuseppe's body, and how Giuseppe was blackmailing Virginia. Anthony is amazed to find the missing letters on his dressing table; they are all there.
12. What does Monsieur Lemoine say is hidden in Mr Isaacstein's suitcase?

Answer: Revolver

Mr Isaacstein is leaving for London. His suitcase is accidentally thrown of the luggage cart. Monsieur Lemoine takes the opportunity of searching it. Bill and Virginia return the suitcase to Mr Isaacstein but without the revolver.
13. In the secret chamber, Battle discovers, hidden, some curious objects. There are some pearl buttons, some coarse knitting and a scrap of paper with a row of capital letters on it. What was the letter?

Answer: E

There is also a fresh matchstick in the chamber. Count Stylptitch seems to have left these clues to torment the people who stole the jewel. Both Anthony and Mr Fish seem interested in the rose garden. Later, Anthony goes to London with Bundle, in her car.
14. Where is Mademoiselle Brun discovered?

Answer: In the library

Anthony says he may be able to produce a new heir to the throne of Herzoslovakia. He invites Mr Isaacstein too. Everyone reassembles at Chimneys, and Anthony returns. Monsieur Lemoine accuses Anthony of being King Victor and sends a note to someone to bring proof. Anthony does not deny it, but says King Victor has never killed anyone.

He is fairly certain that the hidden jewel is in the library. A noise is heard in the library. Boris has a desperate struggle with somebody and a gunshot is heard. When the lights go on, Mademoiselle Brun is lying on the floor, dead. Boris says that she killed his master.
15. Which was not an alias that Mademoiselle Brun had used?

Answer: Comtesse De Breteuil

Her real name was Angéle Mory, she was a French actress. She married King Nicholas IV, but was still in correspondence with King Victor. Queen Varaga was believed to be assassinated along with her husband. Monsieur Lemoine is revealed to be none other than King Victor.

The real Monsieur Lemoine is the stranger whom Mr Fish and Anthony found in the house in Dover. Anthony is revealed to be Prince Nicholas, the next heir to the throne of Herzoslovakia. He "killed" Prince Nicholas and became plain Anthony Cade. Anthony married Virginia that morning. Anthony plans to become the King of Herzoslovakia with Virginia as his Queen. Jimmy McGrath comes to Chimneys; he is very impressed with Virginia. Anthony sends Jimmy to the London publishers, with the memoirs.

The memoirs never left him. He gave the mysterious Mr Holmes a false manuscript. Hope you enjoyed my quiz - look out for more soon!
