Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What point of view is the book mostly in?

Answer: third person omniscient

Even though the speaker knows all of the characters, making it omniscient and not limited, (I'll use the gender she) she mostly focuses on the main character, Lalu/Polly, and seems to know the most about her.
2. Why does Lalu's father sell her to the bandits?

Answer: Because he needs food for his family.

Her father calls her his qianjin (Chinese for treasure), his thousand pieces of gold (hence the title name), and promises he'll never sell, hurt, or kill her. However, he has to because he needs to think of the rest of his family and not just her. She feels betrayed but later understands.
3. Does Lalu ever get to go to America? If so, what happens when she gets there?

Answer: Yes, and she still has no freedom until about 15-20 years later.

When she goes there, she meets a hot Chinese man named Jim. But he dies *tear*. She later gets gambled off and marries a man named Charlie, who grants her freedom and makes her truly happy for the first time of her life.
4. How old is Lalu when she loses her virginity, and to whom?

Answer: Around age 20 to Hong King

Ok this is kinda disgusting, but Hong King is really old (in the book it says "shriveled manhood" if you know what I mean). She is basically forced to have sex, but since he bought her, she technically is not being raped. She is not a whore because she never consents to being sold.
5. What is Lalu's new name when she gets sent to America?

Answer: Polly

A Cai is the name of her younger brother, Chen is the bandit. When Lalu says "I Lalu", a man in America says "Aww the doll can talk. Slaves do not choose their name. From now on you are Polly".
6. Who is Charlie?

Answer: A friend of Jim's, a bar owner, and Polly's future husband

He stops the men in the bar next door to his from harassing Polly. He helps her because he knew it was wrong, not just because Jim asks him to. Charlie is a great friend and he is respected and trusted by many.
7. Polly consents to marrying Charlie, on what conditions?

Answer: He and Polly must not have children, and she must still have her newfound freedom.

She does not want to have kids because she does not want to disappoint them as her father did to her. Also, as a Chinese woman in the mid 1800s in America, freedom is extremely important to her because they treat Chinese women unfairly compared to the white man.
8. How does Charlie die?

Answer: Consumption (coughs and there is blood in his mucus).

He is quite old when he dies (63 I believe), but he could have lived much longer if he was not sick. Hunting accidents don't happen too much. He gets shot, but Polly pulls out the bullet deep in his back/neck, and puts mold in it to heal it up. She tries to save him again as he dies (which she is able to do), but Charlie says that she can't keep on saving him because he is suffering and will eventually have to die.
9. Who says this quote "You cannot change your fate. Our destinies are planned for us."?

Answer: Ding, a bandit

Ding says this because he secretly does not want Lalu to get hurt by the bandits. However, he tells her to not run away because she is destined to be there and eventually whatever is planned for her will occur and she will be fine. He is definitely right.
10. What is supposedly different about Lalu compared to most Asian girls?

Answer: All of these choices

According to the beginning of the story, most girls her age in that time period get married off at age 14, never work on fields, and have their feet bound to keep them tiny. Since she offers to help her father, she gets her feet unbound, which makes them grow. Because her skin gets darker and feet huge, no man in China will want to marry her, which is why she does not get married until much later on.
