Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. King Brytta of Rohan was beloved of all his people, and was granted a surname to that effect. What was his surname?

Answer: Léofa

Láthspell was Wormtongue's surname for Gandalf, meaning "Ill-news". Wormtongue meant to insult Gandalf, but instead when Gandalf proved his power, it only diminished Gríma's hold over Théoden. Lórindol was the surname of Hador of the Third House of the Edain. It means "golden-haired" and refers to the blond hair prominent in the members of the House of Hador. Labadal was the surname of Sador, a servant of Húrin. Sador befriended Túrin Turambar, and Túrin gave him the name meaning "hop-foot", referring to Sador's lameness.

Léofa means "beloved", and that was what the people of Rohan called him, as the 11th king aided the needy after the policies set down by his father Fréaláf Hildeson. Brytta ruled at the time of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, and many of the fleeing orcs plagued the people of Rohan. Brytta Léofa attempted to slay them all, and indeed, the vast majority never made it to the White Mountains.
2. Of what race was Landroval?

Answer: Eagle

Landroval was the brother of Gwaihir the Windlord, and from the field of battle before the Morannon, he flew with Gwaihir and Meneldor to Mordor. Upon espying Frodo and Sam, they bore them back to Minas Tirith, to the Houses of Healing.
3. She was the most beautiful maiden to walk the Middle-earth, her likeness was to be found in Arwen Evenstar (her granddaughter's granddaughter). She wed a maimed man. Who was she?

Answer: Luthien

Lúthien Tinúviel was the beloved of Beren son of Barahir, and the daughter of King Elwë Singollo (Thingol) of Doriath, who was loth to acknowledge their love. She helped Beren wrest a Silmaril from the iron crown of Morgoth, only to have Beren lose a hand in the endeavour. When Thingol saw this, he softened and an expedition was organized to retrieve the Silmaril from the belly of the wolf Carcharoth. Alas, Beren was slain by the fell wolf, and the Silmaril was set in his remaining hand to ease his passing.

Wait, wait, WAIT! This can't be! Lúthien and Beren were supposed to have been married... What's wrong here?

Lúthien's love for Beren was so strong, that she passed away too, and upon reaching the Halls of Mandos, she sung a lament so powerful and heartbreaking that Mandos himself was moved, and he granted them a second life. They married, and lived on the island of Tol Galen, where their son Dior was born.
4. The wife of Otho and mother of Lotho, who was locked up at the old age of over a hundred years old?

Answer: Lobelia

Lobelia Sackville-Baggins was opposed to Bilbo from the start, as she coveted Bag-End. When Bilbo adopted Frodo, she loathed him, because she and Otho would have inherited the abode in the case of Bilbo's death. When Frodo left the Shire, he sold Bag-End to Lobelia, at a very handsome price.

During the War of the Ring, evil things were taking place in the Shire. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins was locked up in the Lockholes even though she was the mother of 'the Chief'. When Sharkey came into power, he imposed stricter edicts, and Lobelia went after a ruffian leader armed with nothing but an umbrella. When Frodo finally rescued her, she restored Bag-End to Frodo and went to live with her Bracegirdle relatives, but died the following spring.
5. Leaflock the Ent, what was his elvish name?

Answer: Finglas

Finglas is one of the three eldest Ents, along with Fangorn (Treebeard) and Fladrif (Skinbark). Leaflock had become sleepy and tree-ish, and needed to be truly roused to do something against Saruman.
6. Although Irmo was his true name, what was the name commonly associated with this Vala?

Answer: Lórien

Lórien got his name from the garden of Lórien where this Vala dwells in Valinor. He is the brother to Mandos and Nienna, and is the spouse of Estë. He is associated most commonly with dreaming and desires. His garden is the fairest in the world, and many spirits are drawn to there to be refreshed.
7. Hers was the laughter that was cut short by Morgoth, sister and daughter to heroes. Who was she?

Answer: Lalaith

She was the second child of Húrin Thalion and Morwen Eledhwen, and the sister of Túrin Turambar. Her voice filled their house in Dor-lómin with laughter, which is what her name means. When Morgoth sent the plague, both the children were afflicted, but only Túrin survived, and Lalaith passed away, sending the house into a gloom. She was the first of the children of Húrin to die, from the terrible curse Morgoth laid on his House:
"Behold! The shadow of my thought shall lie upon them wherever they go, and my hate shall pursue them to the ends of the world".
("Unfinished Tales")
8. Where did Lothíriel of Gondor become the lady of the land?

Answer: Rohan

Lothíriel was the daughter of Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth. After the War of the Ring, she married King Éomer Éadig of Rohan and became his queen. They had one son named Elfwine who succeeded Éomer in the Fourth Age.
9. How was Léod, father of the first King of Rohan, killed?

Answer: thrown off a wild horse

Léod was Lord of the Éothéod, descendants of the men of Rhovanion that were lovers of horses and the green plains. They were a numerous people at the time of Léod's reign, and were peaceful. Léod was a tamer of wild horses and when his son Eorl was only 16, Léod was thrown off of a horse and struck his head on a rock. Eorl inherited the Lordship that day, although he was so young, and 9 years later earned the land of Rohan.

The horse Léod was thrown off of was called Felaróf, a great white horse. Eorl hunted down the horse, and demanded of it to give up its freedom in exchange for taking his father's life. Felaróf became the first of the Mereas, the horses of the Kings of Rohan, of whom Shadowfax was descended.
10. This fellowship member killed 41 orcs at the Battle of the Hornburg, was the son of a king but never king himself, who was he?

Answer: Legolas

Legolas was the only named child of King Thranduil of the Green-elves. Legolas grew up in Greenwood Forest, and saw the forest turn into Mirkwood. Nevertheless, he had an affinity for all things green and growing, and his name literally means 'Green-leaf'.

Legolas was the representative of the Elves on the Quest of the Ring, and overcame social prejudices and became firm friends with Gimli son of Glóin, a dwarf. He proved himself in battle countless times, and became enamoured of two things: Fangorn Forest and the Sea. After the War was over Legolas and Gimli visited Fangorn together, by permission of Treebeard. When King Elessar died, Legolas built a great ship and sailed over the sea with Gimli.
