Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Bilbo hosts his famous 111th birthday party, his private party later in the day has a member put his furry and large feet on the table. What was his family name?

Answer: Proudfoot

Old Odo Proudfoot places his feet upon the table when Bilbo is thanking his guests for coming. Bilbo calls them "Proudfoots" as the plural but Odo counters with "Proudfeet". Later, we meet Odo's grandson Sancho who, along with other young hobbits, is trying to knock holes in the walls of Bag End to try and find Bilbo's 'hidden fortune' that is rumoured to exist.
2. Pharazon was an usurper, an upstart who took the throne by force when he wed his unwilling cousin. What kingdom did he unlawfully take the throne of?

Answer: Numenor

Pharazôn was the son of Gimilkhâd, the younger son of Ar-Gimilzôr, the 23rd King of Númenor. His uncle was Tar-Palantir, the 24th King of Númenor, and the penultimate. Though Tar-Palantir tried to return the kingdom to its roots, his effort was too late coming. There were many who objected, including Pharazôn. Tar-Palantir's daughter, Tar-Míriel should have become the Ruling Queen when her father passed away from grief. However, Pharazôn forced Míriel into marriage, against the rules of the island, and seized the power.

As king, Ar-Pharazôn made war on Mordor and brought back Sauron as his prisoner. Sauron, over a period of time, began to whisper words into Pharazôn's ear of the riches that lay to the west. Over time, Pharazôn began to covet the power of the Eldar and eventually set sail to the forbidden west. The island of Númenor was sunk back into the sea as a punishment and Ar-Pharazôn became the last king of Númenor. His fate was uncertain, but, in all likelihood, he perished with the rest of his fleet while in Valinor.
3. Who does Frodo refer to as the "Pale King" upon Weathertop?

Answer: Lord of the Nazgul

After meeting Aragorn in Bree, he becomes the guide for the four hobbits. He takes them on a "short cut through the woods" to evade the Ringwraiths that are chasing Frodo's ring. Upon the hill called Weathertop (Amon Sûl), the Ringwraiths attack the company. Though the hobbits try to repel the attackers with fire, the ring calls to Frodo to put it on.

When he dons the ring, he sees the wraiths as pale beings and sees one of them with a crown upon his head. This is the Lord of the Nazgûl himself and he stabs Frodo with a Morgul blade. Frodo, when he comes to, refers to the Lord of the Nazgûl as the "Pale King" for his ethereal appearance.
4. Pelendur was a Steward of Gondor. He started which tradition for the Stewards?

Answer: That the succession of Stewards would be hereditary.

Pelendur was the Steward of Gondor of the line of the House of Húrin. It was his idea that the succession of Stewards would be hereditary to the next male descendant. Pelendur was needed to rule Gondor when his king, Ondoher, as well as Ondoher's two sons were killed in battle in the Third Age, 1944.

After receiving Pelendur's backing, Eärnil, a general of the line of Melendil was chosen over Arvedui of the line of Isildur. Pelendur served as Steward until he passed away, and the Stewardship passed on to his son, Vorondil.
5. When five wizards were sent to the Middle-earth at the beginning of the Third Age, two of them wore blue. One was called Alatar, what was the other called?

Answer: Pallando

The Ithryn Luin, or Blue Wizards, were two of the five Istari sent to the Middle-earth at the beginning of the Third Age. Along with his friend Alatar, Pallando passed on into the east, presumably to start unrest against Sauron there. Whether he succeeded or not is a matter of debate. What we do know is that Pallando was a Maia, and one of the sons of Oromë the Huntsman.
6. Tom Pickthorn was one of only a few men of Bree to lose their life during the War of the Ring. How many men does Barliman say died in total?

Answer: 5

Barliman Butterbur meets with the remainder of the Fellowship after the War of the Ring after a few tough years at his inn. He mentions that five Bree-landers have died in the time of the war, though he doesn't specify how. One of the men mentioned is Tom Pickthorn:
"...and little Tom Pickthorn from over the Hill..."
On the other side of the hill was the town of Staddle, however, Tom must have been from somewhere closer to Bree to be considered in Barliman's reckoning.
7. Paladin Took II was the father of Peregrin Took and the 31st Thain of the Shire. Who was his wife?

Answer: Eglantine Banks

Paladin Took II was the Thain of the Shire who refused to bend to Lotho Sackville-Baggins during the War of the Ring, meaning, Tookland was free of the tyranny of Lotho and Sharkey. Paladin married Eglantine Banks, a hobbit probably not from the Shire, as 'Banks' was a last name found in Bree. Together, the two had three daughters, Pearl, Pimpernel, and Pervinca, and lastly they had a son, Peregrin, who went on to join Frodo in the Company of the Ring and later became the 32nd Thain of the Shire.
8. The 'Prince of Dol Amroth' at the time of the War of the Ring was Imrahil. The first Prince was a man called Galador. Who was said to have been Galador's mother?

Answer: An elf

Galador was the first Prince of Dol Amroth. Before that time the land was called Dor-en-Ernil, in Belfalas, near the mouth of the River Anduin. When the Elven King Amroth drowned in the Bay of Belfalas, the princes renamed their fiefdom 'Dol Amroth' in the drowned king's honour. Galador's father, Imrazôr (the Númenórean), was believed to have wed Mithrellas, an elf woman, only the third such union at that time.

The Prince of Dol Amroth was subject to the King of Gondor. At the time of the War of the Ring, the princedom supplied men to the fight against Mordor who were valiant and strong.
9. Which of these 'P' characters was the mother of Frodo Baggins?

Answer: Primula Brandybuck

Primula Brandybuck was the mother of Frodo Baggins, the Bearer of the Ring. She, herself, was the daughter of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took, who were also the great-grandparents of Merry Brandybuck. She married Drogo Baggins and the two drowned in the River Brandywine leaving young Frodo an orphan.

He was then adopted by his cousin/uncle, Bilbo, and the rest, as they say, is history.
10. He was a companion of Frodo on the Quest of the Ring and a member of the Fellowship. An impulsive young hobbit, who was this young Took?

Answer: Pip

Peregrin Took, known to all as Pippin, or even Pip, was the youngest of the Fellowship of the Ring. He set out from the Shire when he was only 28, considered a very young age for hobbits, and was selected by Gandalf and Elrond as a member of the Fellowship. As a Took, he was probably very adventurous, which suited his leaving the Shire.

At Parth Galen, Pippin, along with Merry, get separated from the Fellowship. They are abducted by the orc Grishnákh and are being taken to Isengard. However, the Three Hunters (Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn) catch up to the orcs after they're killed by Riders of Rohan. However, Pippin and Merry have escaped into the Fangorn Forest. When Merry rides with the Riders, Pippin goes with Gandalf to Minas Tirith and meets Denethor, to whom he offers his service. Pippin remains in the service of Gondor for the remainder of his life. Pippin is also instrumental in the Raising of the Shire to expel Lotho and Sharkey as the leaders of the Shire and clean up their home from the Ruffians.
