A dying wizard, Drum Billet, reached the village of Bad Ass to hand over his staff to the eighth son of an eighth son as per tradition. Unfortunately, he didn't realize that the newborn was a female. Thus, Eskarina Smith became the first female wizard on the Disc.

Granny tries her best to look the part of a witch. Despite her efforts, she has perfect skin without a single wart and a perfect set of teeth. She has managed to develop a penetrating stare with her blue eyes which have also been called 'gimlet eyes'.
