John Ford directed this classic western. This film teamed longtime friends Stewart and Wayne for the first time in their careers. It was also the first time Wayne referred to someone as "pilgrim" in a movie.

John Wayne had planned to play the lead, but he was busy filming "The Searchers", so he gave the part to Scott. Wayne's Batjack Production company produced the film. Howard Hughes got Scott his first acting part in the 1928 film "Sharp Shooters".

This film did not glamorize life during this period of time the way earlier Hollywood efforts did, it was dirty, violent and portrayed the feudal system in a more historically accurate sense. In his autobiography, Heston wrote that during filming, a young film school student hung around the set a lot, his name was Steven Spielberg.
