Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1970: What animal is missing from this title, "Two _______ for Sister Sara"?

Answer: Mules

Hogan (Clint Eastwood), a former American Civil War soldier, sees a woman about to be raped by some bandits, which he kills. He learns the woman, Sara (Shirley MacLaine), is a nun raising money to help the Mexican revolutionaries. She asks him to take her to the Mexican border, and he agrees. Hogan is going to help the revolutionaries as well. Sara swears and drinks whiskey, which surprises Hogan.

When Hogan is shot, she can help him with the wound. Soon, Sara reveals she isn't a nun but a prostitute posing as a nun as she is wanted by the French for helping the revolutionaries.

He is surprised, but the two fall in love during the movie.
2. 1971: The first line of the narrator in this made-for-TV movie is, "Ernest Hemingway once said, 'Every true story ends in death.' Well, this is a true story." What was this movie?

Answer: Brian's Song

"Brian's Song" is the story of the friendship between Brian Piccolo (James Caan) and Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams). Both men tried out for the same position with the Chicago Bears. Brian and Gale soon became friends and roommates at the hotels on the road.

This was the first time a white and black person roomed together on the team. After Gale hurts his knee, Brian helps him get back in the game because he doesn't want people to say he made it because Gale Sayers was injured. Unfortunately, later, Brian gets cancer. Gale dedicates a game to him, which the Bears lose. Piccalo tells him, "when you dedicate a game to someone, you are then supposed to go out and win it, idiot. You know, Pat O'Brien never said, 'Let's blow one for the Gipper'."
3. 1972: What movie, starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, takes place at the Kit Kat Klub?

Answer: Cabaret

"Cabaret" is the movie musical version of the Kander and Ebb Broadway musical from 1966. Both the original cast and the film starred Joel Grey as the Emcee. In the Broadway version, Sally Bowles is from England, but in the movie, she is American because Liza Minnelli couldn't do the British accent well enough. Sally is a performer at the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin, Germany. Brian (Michael York) lives in the same boarding house as Sally, and she tries to seduce him, but he is not interested. They become friends. This storyline is mixed with performances at the Kit Kat Klub and the rise of Nazi power.

Both Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey won Oscars for their roles in the movie.
4. 1973: This Andrew Lloyd Webber musical told the story of the last seven days of the life of Jesus. What is it?

Answer: Jesus Christ Superstar

Yvonne Elliman played Mary Magdalene in the original Broadway cast in 1971 and the movie. Tim Rice did the lyrics for this show. Ted Neeley played Jesus, and Carl Anderson played Judas. Dressed in modern (the 1970s) clothes, the cast arrives at the desert by bus, and sets up to tell the story of Jesus' last week. Judas walks away from the others.

He is concerned about what people will think because Jesus has a reputation for hanging around outcasts like Mary Magdalene. Eventually, Judas takes blood money from Caiphas (Bob Bingham) and Annas (Kurt Yaghjian) to point Jesus out so they can arrest Him.
5. 1974: Mel Brooks directed this comedy that starred Cleavon Little as a sheriff. What is it?

Answer: Blazing Saddles

Bart (Cleavon Little) is a black sheriff in the rather racist town of Rock Ridge in 1874. His deputy is Jim, aka "The Waco Kid" (Gene Wilder), whose shooting hand shakes all the time. Hedley Lamar (Harvey Korman) - not to be confused with Hedy Lamar, is trying to become rich by getting the people to abandon Rock Ridge as the railroad wants to build the railroad through the town to avoid the quicksand. Bart is willing to help the town if they accept the blacks, Chinese and Irish in their town. This movie has a lot of slapstick comedy.
6. 1975: This movie won the Oscar for 1975. It starred Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy and Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched. What was it?

Answer: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Randle McMurphy has to work on an Oregon work farm for statutory rape in 1963. To avoid hard labor, he gets transferred to a mental hospital run by Nurse Mildred Ratched. The patients are scared of her. Soon McMurphy and Ratched are in a battle of wits. McMurphy is forced to undergo electroconvulsive therapy after claiming he had a brain injury.

But in reality, he is more determined to destroy Ratched with help from Chief (Will Sampson), whom everyone thought was a deaf-mute but can hear and speak.
7. 1976: Who was the man who jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge in the movie that starts with the words "Ode to"?

Answer: Billy Joe

"Ode to Billy Joe" was based on the song of the same name by Bobbie Gentry. In the movie, Billy Joe (Robby Benson) is drunk and has sex with a man who is his boss (James Best). Later, when his girlfriend, Bobbie (Glynnis O'Connor), wants to have sex, Billy Joe can't and confesses to her he had sex with a man and feels guilty.

She says he probably didn't know what he was doing since he was drunk, but Billy Joe claims he did know what he was doing. Unable to deal with the guilt, Billy Joe commits suicide by jumping off the bridge.
8. 1977: This movie starred John Travolta as Tony Manero and featured music by the BeeGees. What was it?

Answer: Saturday Night Fever

Tony Manero is a nineteen-year-old in Brooklyn who enjoys going to a discotheque called 2001 Odyssey. Annette (Donna Pescow) is in love with Tony. While he doesn't find her attractive, he agrees to be her dance partner for the upcoming contest until he sees Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), whom he finds attractive and is a better dancer than Annette. Stephanie agrees to be his partner in the dance contest but not to date him. Stephanie and Tony win the contest but believe a Puerto Rican couple danced better but were disqualified because of race.

He gives them the trophy and money. He then tries to have sex with Stephanie in his friend Bobby's (Barry Miller) car, but she runs. His other friends come to the vehicle with Annette, who is very drunk. Joey (Joseph Calli) tells Tony that Annette agreed to have sex with them all. Tony tries to lead her away but is stopped by Double J (Paul Pape) and Joey. Joey finishes with Annette, then Double J has his way with her, and Tony sits uncomfortably. The men all then start climbing on the cables of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and Bobby falls to his death.
9. 1978: This was a musical starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, which came out in 1978. What was it called?

Answer: Grease

Danny (Travolta) and Sandy (Newton-John) had a summer fling. In the fall, Danny returns to school at Rydell High as a senior and a member of the T-birds. He soon learns Sandy did not return to Australia as planned but is also a student at Rydell. Danny does not want to look uncool to his friends and is a jerk to Sandy, who is heartbroken that he is not the man she fell in love with over the summer. Frenchy (Didi Conn) invites Sandy to the sleepover with the other Pink Ladies. Rizzo (Stockard Channing) makes fun of Sandy, who is hurt. Rizzo leaves the sleepover with her boyfriend Kenickie (Jeff Conaway).

Rizzo thinks she is pregnant with Kenickie's child. The drag race is on, but Kenickie gets knocked unconscious by his car door, so Danny races in his place. Sandy decides she must change to avoid losing Danny for good and ask for Frenchy's help. At the carnival on the last day of school, Kenickie learns Rizzo isn't pregnant, and Danny is shocked to find Sandy in a black leather outfit.

Fun facts: Olivia Newton-John had to be sewn into the black leather outfit to make it fit as tightly as it did.

Jeff Conaway, at one point, played Danny on Broadway. However, Kenickie sang "Greased Lighnin'" on Broadway. He was disappointed, so when he got cast as Kenickie in the movies, he planned to sing it only to lose it to John Travolta, who played Danny.

The day Stockard Channing sang to the Elvis picture was August 16, 1977 - The day Elvis died.
10. 1979: "I was born a poor black child" was said by Steve Martin in what film?

Answer: The Jerk

Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) was raised by a black family and always thought he was also black until his mother told him he wasn't. He sets out to make a name for himself in St. Louis. On the way, Navin stayed at a motel and acquired a dog who woke him up barking. He named the dog (on the TV version, which is family-friendly) Stupid.

He gets a job at a gas station and his name in the phone book, which he is ecstatic about. A crazy man (M. Emmett Walsh) picks Navin's name randomly out of the phone book and decides to shoot him. Navin thinks the man hates oil cans. Navin ends up at a carnival, where he meets and later marries Marie (Bernadette Peters) and then becomes rich from a handle on the bridge of glasses he invented.
