Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's the start of baseball season, and Charlie Brown is on his way to the diamond. But he's unhappy when he gets there. What has him upset? (The girls all like it though.)

Answer: The pitcher's mound is covered in dandelions.

Charlie Brown doesn't like the indignity of pitching from a mound covered in dandelions. But the girls tell him not to cut them off, because they're cute and he's cute standing on them. His catcher, Schroeder, is amused too, telling Charlie Brown that the girls are right.
2. Charlie Brown is walking to school. There is a spelling bee at school that day, and Lucy suggests Charlie Brown enter, so she can tease him some more. The girls sing a song, which has what alliterative insult for Charlie Brown?

Answer: failure face

Lucy, Violet, and Patty call him "failure face". Linus suggests that Charlie Brown enter anyway, and between his friend's suggestion and his anger at the girls, Charlie Brown manages to get up enough nerve to enter the spelling bee.
3. Charlie Brown spells two words correctly to win his class spelling bee. They are words that Lucy and Violet grumble are very familiar to him. What are they?

Answer: FAILURE and INSECURE

He successfully spells "failure" first, and then "insecure" to win. That was all he needed, as his unseen competitors miss words like "neighbor" and "charities".
4. Charlie Brown has trouble remembering which old spelling axiom: "I" before "E", except after "_______"?

Answer: C

"I before E, except after C, or when sounded like A as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh'." Actually there are lot of exceptions to this rule, but people still use it. Linus and Snoopy help him try to keep this straight with a cute song.
5. To win the school spelling bee, Charlie Brown has to spell the word "perceive". Who helps him remember the "I before E" rule he needs to spell this one?

Answer: Snoopy

When his competitor fails to spell "embarrassment" correctly, Charlie Brown is given the word "perceive" for the win. He can't remember the rule until Snoopy starts playing a mouth harp, which reminds Charlie Brown of a song that Linus and he had sung on remembering the rule.
6. Champion Charlie Brown! Unfortunately for him, the win only leads him to a bigger spelling bee, this one in New York. Lucy appoints herself as Charlie Brown's agent, for which she decides she is entitled to a percentage of any money he wins. In return for this, she helps him learn how to spell more words.

Answer: False

Ha,ha! That might have helped him, so no, she doesn't do that. She decides to help him learn how to walk, talk, and smile better.
7. Charlie Brown almost thwarts his own chances to win the national spelling bee before it begins. What does he do?

Answer: He stays up all night studying.

Charlie Brown is so determined to do well, he doesn't get any sleep! He stays up and goes over words in his books.
8. Linus hurries to New York before the spelling bee. Why does Linus go?

Answer: He wants his security blanket back from Charlie Brown.

Linus gave Charlie Brown his blanket as a good luck charm before he left. But unfortunately for Linus, he found out he couldn't survive without his blanket for that long. So he goes to New York and takes Snoopy with him, but Charlie Brown tells him he lost the blanket! Fortunately he didn't really lose it - it was underneath his bed, and Charlie Brown had simply forgotten about it.
9. Charlie Brown makes it to the final two in the national spelling bee! But much to everyone's surprise, he misspells a word he should have easily known. What is the word?

Answer: beagle

Unbelievable! He spells it b-e-a-g-e-l. This, in spite of the fact that Linus holds Snoopy up over his head as a helpful reminder - and as most "Peanuts" fans know, Snoopy is a beagle. What a blockhead!
10. Charlie Brown gets his spirits back at the end of the film when he sees Lucy playing with a football. What happens next? (Hint: It happens very often in the comic strip.)

Answer: Charlie Brown tries to kick the football, but Lucy pulls it away.

Poor Charlie Brown! Lucy does walk over to him and welcome him back home. At least, things are back to normal.
